Expressions about water are almost as common as water itself. But many of them have unpleasant meanings.
The expression “to be in hot water” is one of them. When we are in “hot water”, we are in trouble. A person who breaks a law can be in hot water with the police.
“To keep your head above water” is a colorful expression that means staying out of debt (债务). A company tries to keep its head above water during hard economic (经济的) times. A man who loses his job tries to keep his head above water until he finds a new job.
“Water over the dam (坝)” is another expression about a past event. It is something that is finished. It cannot be changed.
Another common expression, “to hold water”, is about the strength or weakness of an idea or opinion that you may be arguing about. If your argument (论点) can hold water, it is strong and does not have any holes. If it does not hold water, then it is weak and not worth arguing.
“Throwing cold water” is also an expression that deals with ideas or advice. It means not liking an idea. For example you want to buy a new car. But your wife “throws cold water” on the idea because she says a new car costs too much.

The Power of the Role Model
Dear editor,
Among the inspiring role models featured on CCTV’s Role Models program, Ms. Zhang, a rural teacher, has left the deepest impression on me. She has devoted her life to helping girls get an education. Though in poor health, she worked hard to build a school, letting many girls from poor families go to college. Her story touches me deeply. When I want to give up studying, I think of her. It encourages me to keep going.
From her, I learn that small actions can make a big difference. Everyone can be a light to others by doing their best.
Yours

For example, you want to buy a new car. But your wife “throws cold water” on the idea because she says a new car costs too much.
25. What do expressions about water usually mean according to the writer?
A. Important B. Great C. Bad D. Interesting

C. He is afraid of telling the truth. D. He can’t get along well with others.
27. What can we infer from the phrase “water over the dam”?
A. There was a heavy rain recently. B. His/her argument has no holes.
C. What we finished can’t change. D. People can’t live without water.
28. In which part of a website would we most probably find the text?
A. Culture. B. Life. C. Geography. D. History.
C
A 20,000-kilometer walk called “The Herds” has started from Africa to the Arctic Circle. The journey will take four months and teach people about climate change. Over 2,000 people are helping to make hundreds of large animal puppets, like lions, zebras, and monkeys, all from recycled materials. The organizers want to show how climate change is harming animals. A spokesperson said, “This is a big art project that combines culture and climate action.”
The animal puppets will travel to 20 cities in Africa and Europe, including Paris and London, with the walk ending in August. Each city will host street performances about protecting the planet. An environmental group said, “The Herds will bring nature’s beauty to millions of people in cities.” Another group added, “This walk highlights (强调) the problems of climate change and disappearing wildlife, and how we can create a better future.”
The Herds is a creative way to raise awareness about the environment. By using art and performance, it helps people understand the dangers of climate change and what we can do to help.
29. How long will “The Herds” walk take?
A. Two months. B. Four months. C. Six months. D. Eight months.
30. What are the animal puppets made from?

B. To teach about climate change and animals.
C. To break a walking record all over the world.
D. To show puppets are better than real animals.
D
Alessandro Volta was born in Italy in 1745. He loved learning about electricity and he even wrote a poem about it! He invented a machine that could produce static electricity (静电) and then in 1800 he invented the battery.
Batteries are all around us these days—in our cars, phones, computers and clocks. Look around and see how many gadgets (小玩意) you can see that work on batteries.
The battery has made a huge change to the world of electricity because you can carry it everywhere. Since Alessandro’s days many scientists have improved his idea. Today we have many different types of batteries, including batteries of different sizes and for different purposes (目的).
Now, a lot of cars run on batteries instead of gasoline (汽油). These electric cars don’t make dirty smoke like gas cars do. They help to make the air cleaner and our planet greener, showing just how much batteries can still change our world for the better!
33. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Electricity. B. The battery. C. A machine. D. Static electricity.
34. When did Alessandro Volta invent the battery?
A. In 1745. B. In 1754. C. In 1800. D. In 1820.
