Alena Wicker, from Texas, was accepted to Arizona State University. She's double
majoring in astronomical and planetary science and chemistry, aiming to work as an engineer at
NASA,a dream she's had since childhood.Initially wanting to be an astronomer,Wicker shifted
to engineering due to her passion for building things.
Her love for building started with Legos at age four. Her mother,Daphne McQuarter,
recognized her talent early, noting that Wicker was always strategic with her Lego sets.
Recently, she has built models like the Taj Mahal,Disney castle, and the Apollo 11 rover.A
Star Wars fan,Wicker's favorite Lego creation is the Millennium Falcon.
Wicker also noticed gender and racial disparities()in STEM fields and founded a
website,Brown Stem Girl(BSG),to support girls of color in STEM.While women make up
half of U.S.STEM workers, they are mostly in healthcare, and Black people are
underrepresented in fields like engineering.Wicker was motivated to close this gap.
In the process.Wicker encountered people who played below the belt, but the inequality
didn't beat her.She knew that making a difference required resilience().
Besides college and BSG,Wicker is learning Spanish and Arabic. She's working on a
children's book,Brainiac World,reclaiming the term "brainiac"from childhood teasing.She's
also developing a podcast to encourage girls in STEM,hoping to participate in conversations
with inspiring figures to motivate others with her story.
Though her journey is challenging,Wicker is determined. She offers advice to others:"You

Long holidays often mean the chance to sleep in.For many parents,it's time to let kids stay
up late and allow them to catch up on sleep the next morning.A few late nights and sleep-ins
won't hurt, but it's best not to fall completely off the bedtime routine during the holidays. It can
be very hard to get back on track once school starts. It's fine to be more flexible about bedtime in
the holidays than during school time. But parents must factor in the negative effects once out of
control.
Even relatively minor differences in wake time can upset your circadiant(昼夜节律)rhythms.
Sleep science research supports the need for bed and wake times to be consistent(across
the week and weekend. That's not just because it ensures young people get enough sleep;even
more importantly,it helps because our circadian clock needs regularity.Sleepiness and circadian
rhythms need to be regular so they can work together. When they do,it is best for our quality of
sleep but also for our general health.
Irregular rhythms-which happen when bed times and wake times are significantly different
between school weeks and weekend-can negatively affect mood, psychological and physical
health, social engagement and school performance. The risk with letting kids go to bed late a few
nights in a row is that they'll sleep progressively later each day.If this happens over the entire
school holidays, not only could the bedtime get later and later but the circadian rhythm will
become accustomed to being later and later. If so,resetting the circadian clock to a
school-friendly,manageable time is certainly possible. But it requires some considerable
readjustments and sometimes professional help.
If wake times do get out of kilter, try making them progressively earlier and earlier
gradually over a few weeks before school starts until the required wake time is achieved.A better
solution might be to make sure circadian rhythms don't get out of control in the first place.
28.Why is it important to maintain regular bedtimes?
A.To improve sleep quality and overall health.
B.To avoid excessive sleep during holidays.
C.To keep children active and engaged.
D.To allow more flexible holiday routines.
29.What happens when sleep patterns are inconsistent over the holidays?
A.Their circadian rhythm resets automatically.
B.They sleep longer without negative effects.
C.Mood,health,and school performance can suffer.
D.Children become more adaptable to new routines.
30.What is implied about the circadian rhythm in the passage?
A.It needs consistency to maintain good health.
B.It adapts easily to irregular sleep patterns.
C.It has little impact on sleep quality.
D.It's mostly affected by external factors like light.
31.What is the suggested way to fix disrupted sleep patterns?
A.Let children sleep in as much as they want.
B.Gradually adjust wake times earlier before school.
C.Reset the sleep schedule suddenly after holidays.
D.Wait until school starts and then adjust.

People who experience moves before the age of 15 are over 40%more likely to be diagnosed
with depression in later life,a new study has shown. This finding sheds light on a growing
widespread issue and could be seen as a threat to mental well-being in childhood.
The study was carried out by researchers from Aarhus University. It analyzed all residential
locations of almost 1.1 million people born in Denmark between 1981 and 2001,who stayed in
the country during the first 15 years of their lives. The study then tracked those same individuals
into adulthood and found at least 35,000 of them had later received a medical diagnosis of
depression.
As part of a detailed analysis, the study supported existing evidence by showing that
individuals who live in low income neighborhoods during childhood are more likely-by a factor
of around 10%-to develop depression in adulthood. However, does this mean that depression is
solely related to low income? The study, for the first time, showed that experiences of moving
during childhood-whether between or within poor or rich neighborhoods-are also associated
with significantly higher rates of depression in adulthood.
The study highlights a trend where childhood mobility is a potential weapon that increases
the risk of future mental health issues.Specifically, children who experience moves are 41%
more likely to be diagnosed with depression than those who don't.And if a child moves twice or
more between the ages of 10 and 15,the risk rises to around 61%.This is a stronger effect than
growing up in a poor neighborhood.
Some may feel discouraged by the troubling findings, but the study authors remain
optimistic that steps can be taken to restore mental well-being.They suggest that creating stable
environments for children could help reduce future mental health problems. While its focus was
on a significant proportion of the Danish population, the study authors say they would expect to
find similar outcomes across many parts of the world. As such, the findings shouldn't be easily
dismissed, and society must interact thoughtfully with these insights to avoid throwing in the
towel on the next generation's mental health.
32.Which factor is most linked to a higher risk of depression in adulthood?
A.Early depression diagnosis.
B.Poor childhood neighborhood.
C.Multiple relocations during childhood.
D.Separation from parents at an early age.
33.How do the study authors suggest society can reduce mental health risks?
A.Increase financial support.
B.Encourage independence during moves.
C.Diagnose depression earlier.
D.Create stable environments.
34.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.The findings of the study are doubtful.
B.Researchers think they need further study.
C.Childhood depression is hard to cure.
D.The authors are discouraged by others'arguments.
35.What is the best title of the passage?
A.The Impact of Childhood Mobility on Mental Health
B.Income and Depression:Exploring the Connection
C.How Moving Homes Affects Future Mental Well-Being
D.The Role of Stable Environments in Preventing Depression

Have you ever woken up from a strange or amazing dream?Maybe it was so vivid that you
felt the need to turn on the light,or it was so good you wished to sleep longer.36
For centuries, people have believed that dreams are messages from gods or spirits.37
We may dream about a place or person and later encounter them in real life. With four to six
dreams a night,we could have up to 2,000 dreams each year.An 80-year-old might have had
140,000 dreams, though we forget most of them.Yet,the dreams we do remember sometimes
seem to come true, which could be seen as a massive breakthrough in understanding the
connection between the conscious and subconscious mind.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, two main theories about dreams emerged. One suggested
that dreams are repressed thoughts from our subconscious. The other proposed that dreams are
random memories and thoughts from the day, which our brain organizes while we sleep.38
Dreams might be made from our daily thoughts, but we see them in symbolic form, such as
flying representing excitement about a new job.
39 The part of our brain that controls language sleeps, while the emotional part
remains active.Understanding these symbols can give us insight into our subconscious. This
recognition of the emotional aspect of dreams can help us better tackle problems in our waking
life.40 Write down everything you remember as soon as you wake up,using pen and paper
to avoid losing details.
A.Sometimes you feel it impossible to solve it.
B.Apparently, both theories may be partly true.
C.But not all dreams are worth remembering.
D.To interpret your dreams, try keeping a dream diary.
E.But do you think dreams tell us something important?
F.Many still have dreams that seem to predict the future.
G.Dreams often present feelings and symbols rather than words.

或“陷阱”.B.scream(尖叫)与语境不符,指的是声音的表现,而不是环境中的危险.C.weapon(武器)和

文中表达了社区的团结与支持,这是“力量”的体现.A.motivation(动机)和 B.recognition

出意见.C.released(发布)和 D.spread(传播)也不符.
述流行趋势.C.relay(接力)和 D.remark(评论)与语境不符,显然是指一个感人的“故事”.
Oaklynn回到学校,因此应该用“return”表示回归.A.graduation(毕业)和 B.recovery(恢
合上下文的情感表达.C.fights(斗争)和 D.stands(站立)也与母亲的心理状态不符.
ultimately(最终)表示最终结果,但不是这里描述的感情强度.B.legaly(合法地)不符合语境.C.
dramaticaly(戏剧性地)更强调事件的转折,未必符合母亲的情感体验.
由文中提到的“大规模搜寻”可知,应该选 C.A.picture(图片)、B.setting(背景)和 D.link
desperate(绝望的)不符合语境.D.striking(引人注目的)更多是形容事物的外观,不符合语境.

What do you want to do this summer? ID love to go on a road trip. Maybe we can visit some national parks or the . beach that sounds like fun. We could drive to the cold store, explore the mountains. Have you looked into any specific places? How about the grand canyon? I've always wanted to see if we can hike, take some cool photos and maybe do a rafting tour. That's a great idea. We'll need to book everything in advance. What about the time? How long do you think we should stay? Maybe a week? We can drive there, explore the part for a few days, and then relax at a beach nearby for a couple of days after that. I like that plan. We will need to pack hiking gear, swimming suits and lots of snacks for the road. What else do you want to do? Oh, I also want to visit some museums or science centres.
