A special kitchen is in a path, next to Jiangxi Cancer Hospital, in Nanchang. Around meal time, three times every day, relatives of the hospital’s patients use the kitchen to cook food for their loved ones.
The kitchen was originally a breakfast stall (摊) run by a husband and a wife, Wan Zuocheng and Xiong Gengxiang. One day, in 2003, a young couple asked if they could use the stove (炉子) to cook food for their son who had bone cancer (骨癌). He wanted to eat his mother’s cooking while he was in hospital. Wan and Xiong let the young mother use their stove for free. Later on, Wan and Xiong offered their cookers for free, so other families could cook meals for relatives with illness. As words spread, people who had used their cookers began describing the breakfast stall as the “anti-cancer kitchen”. Some even called it the “kitchen of love”.
To let more people cook at the same time, Wan and Xiong turned their breakfast stall into a large kitchen. People who used their kitchen really wanted to share the costs. As a result, Wan and Xiong set a price: One yuan to cook a dish or to buy a box of rice, and three yuan to cook soup. Water or seasoning (调味品) is free. For people from poor families, the couple refuse to accept their money.
▲ They get up at 4 a. m. every day to prepare. They boil water and cook rice first. To make it easier for others to use the kitchen, Wan and Xiong like to clean the kitchen, like sweeping the ground and washing the pots and pans.
Wan and Xiong have run the kitchen for about 20 years. But they have never regretted their decision. They always listen to patients’ relatives talking about their experiences. They believe listening to them helps them feel relaxed. Xiong says, “It is the happiest thing to run the kitchen and help others. ”

Volunteering helps others, but it can also help you. If you’re upset about something that’s happened—like a storm or other disasters (灾难)—doing something about it can be a great way to cope (处理) with your feelings.
Volunteering also lets you see your own life in new ways. Sometimes it’s easy to worry about things like grades or get angry because you don’t have the most expensive gym shoes or the newest computer game. Volunteering lets you spend some time focusing on others for a while.
Lots of people and kids find that they really enjoy volunteering. Volunteer experiences often put you in a different environment and show you people and situations that you wouldn’t have me across in your life. For example, you might learn that just on the edge (边缘) of your town are some kids who really need winter clothes.
It is good to be able to meet a need like that. You’ll know that, thanks to you, some kids have warm coats, hats, gloves and boots. So whether it’s winter clothes, food for the hungry, or homes for unwanted pets, doing volunteer work means one very important thing: You make a difference in the world. So where do you start?

Around meal time, three times every day, relatives of the hospital’s patients use the kitchen to cook food for their loved ones.
分析:句中 “Around meal time” 和 “three times every day” 均为时间状语,修饰整个句子;“relatives of the hospital’s patients” 是名词所有格结构,表示 “医院病人的家属”;“use...to do sth.”
中考考点:“use...to do sth.” 结构,区分于 “use...for doing sth.”(用……
It is the happiest thing to run the kitchen and help others.
分析:此句为 “It is + 形容词 + 名词 + to do sth.” 结构,其中 it 是形式主语,真正的主语是后面的不定式短语 “to run the kitchen and help others”。
中考考点:it 作形式主语的用法,常见结构为 “It is + adj. + to do sth.”。
【答案】1.D 2.B 3.C 4.A 5.C
根据文章第2段首句“The kitchen was originally a breakfast stall…”
根据第3段“One yuan to cook a dish… three yuan to cook soup”可知,两道菜(2×1=2元)加一碗汤(3元)共5元。故选B。
空缺处后文提到“They get up at 4 a.m…”,说明夫妇从清晨开始忙碌。故选C。
根据最后一段“They always listen to patients’ relatives…” 故选A。

If you’re upset about something that’s happened—like a storm or other disasters—doing something about it can be a great way to cope with your feelings.
分析:此句包含 if 引导的条件状语从句,其中that’s happened是定语从句,修饰先行词 something;破折号之间的内容是对 something that’s happened的举例说明;主句的主语是动名词短语doing something about it,谓语是can be,表语是a great way,to cope with your feelings是不定式短语作后置定语,修饰way。
Volunteer experiences often put you in a different environment and show you people and situations that you wouldn’t have come across in your life.
分析:句子主语是 “Volunteer experiences”,谓语是由 “and” 连接的两个并列动词 “put” 和 “show”;“that you wouldn’t have come across in your life” 是定语从句,修饰先行词 “people and situations”,从句中使用了过去将来完成时,表示在过去看来将来某个时间之前会完成的动作。
1.A 2.C 3.D 4.A 5.B
根据“Volunteering helps others, but it can also help you.”
根据“Volunteering also lets you see your own life in new ways.”
