Have you heard of a cloud forest? Is it the same as a rainforest? Actually, it’s a very special kind of forest in cloudy mountains. There, clouds brush through trees and wet their leaves. Rain falls almost every day. Hundreds of mosses (苔藓) grow and cover everything like a soft, green coat.
Plants of cloud forests live in an unusual way. They grow on the branches of trees instead of on the ground. The air is very damp, so plants can get all the water they need from the fog and rain. They live on the high parts of trees so that they can get more light to be stronger.
There are many kinds of special animals in cloud forests. For example, tree kangaroos live in trees like monkeys. They use their long tails to balance just as monkeys do. Frogs have suckers (吸盘) on their toes so they can climb up trees and cross leaves easily. Many other special animals are waiting for us to discover, aren’t they?
Cloud forests are important to people. They give us healthy food crops, such as wild beans, tomatoes, potatoes and strawberries. Besides, they offer new medicine to treat cancer. Unluckily, the beautiful forests are in danger now. Why? Firstly, the climate is getting warmer, but plants and animals in cloud forests like to live where it’s cool. Passage 2
When you first hear about the Dead Sea, it might sound scary, but the truth is quite different. Let’s get closer to the Dead Sea and learn more about it.
The Dead Sea is located in southwest Asia. It is about 50 kilometers long and 15 kilometers wide at its widest point. It sits at about 430 meters below sea level (海平面), making it the lowest point on Earth’s land.
What’s interesting is that the Dead Sea isn’t actually a sea. It’s a lake with a salt concentration (含盐度) of more than 30 percent, which is about eight times saltier than typical seawater. This makes it one of the saltiest bodies of water on Earth.
The Dead Sea stays so salty because of its special natural conditions. Each year, it receives very little rainfall, and only a small amount of fresh water flows into it. And the hot weather around the Dead Sea causes the fresh water to evaporate (蒸发) quickly, which makes the salt concentration even higher. For these reasons, it is also known as the Salt Sea.
If you were to swim in the Dead Sea, you wouldn’t see any sea life—no plants or animals. The high salt concentration makes it impossible for them to live there. That’s actually why it’s called the Dead Sea.
However, don’t let the name or not having any sea life scare you. Even if you fall into the Dead Sea and can’t swim, you won’t die. The high concentration of salt in the Dead Sea allows anyone to float well, without the need for life buoys (救生圈). In fact, many people visit the Dead Sea every year on vacation. If you walk along the lakeside, you’ll likely see many people floating in the water, reading books or magazines.
1.What do we know about the Dead Sea?
A.It is the largest place in Asia. B.It is the widest sea in the world.
C.It is the deepest point in America. D.It is the lowest lake on Earth’s land.
2.What makes the Dead Sea so salty?
A.A lot of seawater runs into it.
B.Human activities improve the salt levels.
C.Little rain falls and fresh water evaporates quickly.
D.The high temperature stops the water from freezing.
3.Why do people call it the Dead Sea?
A.Because they cannot swim in it. B.Because it has something dangerous.
C.Because it has low salt concentration. D.Because no plants or animals can live in it.
4.What does the underlined word “float” probably mean?
5.What can we infer (推断) from the last paragraph?
A.People feel scared when swimming in the Dead Sea.
B.The Dead Sea is dangerous for people who can’t swim.
C.If people can’t swim, they’ll still be safe in the Dead Sea.
D.A life buoy is necessary when swimming in the Dead Sea.
Passage 3
When it comes to the Himalayas (喜马拉雅山), what do you have in your mind? High mountains? White snow? Both answers are right, but in the mountains, there is a place called the Valley (山谷) of Flowers and you can see a very different situation there. It is home to pretty flowers, wild plants and endangered animals.
The Valley of Flowers is in Uttarakhand, one state in the north of India. It is more than 87.5 square kilometers. There are flowers everywhere. However, these flowers are not quite the same as what we often see. They grow in high places in the mountains. There are hundreds of different kinds of flowers in this valley. They bloom (开花) between June and September. When the flowers bloom, the valley looks like a magical world with different colors.
There are also a lot of wild plants, such as trees and grass, in the Valley of Flowers. They are special. Some of them are hard to find anywhere else in the world! What’s more, some endangered animals live in the valley, like snow leopards (雪豹).
Now people have turned the Valley of Flowers into a national park. Visitors can’t build anything or live there. They can’t even stay there for too long at a time. They can only stay there for one day. It’s probably not long enough for visitors to see all the real beauty there.
1.How does the writer start the passage?
A.By asking questions. B.By telling a story.
C.By giving an example. D.By showing some numbers.
2.What can we see in the Valley of Flowers?
A.Trees, grass and elephants. B.Flowers, trees and whales.

A.The trees. B.The animals. C.The flowers. D.The wild plants.
4.What is the structure of the passage? (Paragraph 1=①…)
A.①/②③④ B.①/②③/④ C.①/②/③④ D.①/②/③/④

Passage 1
Deserts (沙漠) are usually known for being very hot, dry, and hard to live in. However, the Badain Jaran Desert is different. There’s a strong connection between local people and the natural environment there.
Badain Jaran Desert is in Inner Mongolia. It’s China’s second-largest moving desert. Animals, especially camels (骆驼), live peacefully with humans in this place. On July 26, 2024, Badain Jaran Desert; Towers of Sand and Lakes was finally added to the World Heritage (遗产) List.
Zhang Jun worked in Bayin Bo Village, Inner Mongolia. In 1956, Zhang’s grandfather came to the village and lived there. At that time, he usually went out and looked after the animals on foot. When Zhang’s father was born in 1960, riding camels was the chief way to travel. But now, people can also use off-road vehicles (越野车) to travel across the desert.
Saihan, a man from Badain Jaran Village, is an experienced farmer. When he was little, going across the desert on a camel took about 15 days. “Nowadays, travel condition is better,” he said. ________ During the busy tourist season, Saihan works as a guide, and he can get 50,000 to 60,000 yuan a year.
The local government is trying to get tourists to come while also protecting the environment. This plan has worked well, and tourists are paying more and more attention to protecting the environment. All waste is carefully collected and dealt with in the town. There is a strong promise to take care of the environment in the desert.

D.To be a Guide in Badain Jaran Desert
【答案】1.B 2.A 3.D 4.C
根据“However, the Badain Jaran Desert is different. There’s a strong connection between local people and the natural environment.”
根据“When Zhang’s father was born in 1960, riding camels was the chief way to travel.” 故选A。
根据“Nowadays, travel condition is better”以及“During the busy tourist season, Saihan works as a guide, and he can get 50,000 to 60,000 yuan a year.”

根据第二段“It sits at about 430 meters below sea level… making it the lowest point on Earth’s land”以及“It’s a lake with a salt concentration…”
根据第四段“it receives very little rainfall… fresh water evaporates quickly”可知,降水少、淡水蒸发快导致盐分浓缩,故选C。
根据第五段“The high salt concentration makes it impossible for them to live there. That’s actually why it’s called the Dead Sea”可知,高盐浓度使得动植物无法在那里生存。
根据最后一段“without the need for life buoys”和“people floating in the water, reading books”可知,高盐度使人无需救生圈即可“漂浮”,故选B。
根据最后一段“Even if you fall into the Dead Sea and can’t swim, you won’t die… allows anyone to float well”可推断,即使不会游泳,因浮力大仍安全,故选C。
C.Flowers, trees and monkeys. D.Flowers, grass and snow leopards.
3.What does the underlined word “them” refer to in Paragraph 3?
A.The trees. B.The animals. C.The flowers. D.The wild plants.
4.What is the structure of the passage? (Paragraph 1=①…)
A.①/②③④ B.①/②③/④ C.①/②/③④ D.①/②/③/④
5.What does the passage mainly tell us?
A.Tells the facts about the Valley of Flowers.
B.Describes the beautiful scene of the Himalayas.
C.Asks more people to visit the Valley of Flowers.
D.Explains the problems of some national parks in India.
1.A 2.D 3.D 4.B 5.A
根据“When it comes to the Himalayas (喜马拉雅山), what do you have in your mind? High mountains? White snow?” 故选A。
根据“There are hundreds of different kinds of flowers in this valley”;“There are also a lot of wild plants…What’s more, some endangered animals live in the valley, like snow leopards (雪豹).”

Do you know what the world’s highest waterfall is? You may say that it is Niagara Falls. Niagara Falls is really beautiful, but the most highest in the world is Angel Falls. It is deep in the jungles (丛林) of Venezuela (委内瑞拉).
Few people have ever seen Angel Falls. It’s very hard to get there. If you go there on foot, you have to travel for weeks through thick jungles. If you go by plane from Caracas, a city on the southern coast, it will take about four hours.
Angel Falls was found by accident. This is one of the most interesting facts about it. It was named after an American pilot. His name was Jimmy Angel. In 1937, his plane crashed (坠毁) near the top of the falls. That’s how he found it.
