(2024年6月新高考卷)
I met Gunter on a cold, wet and unforgettable evening in September. I had planned to fly to Vienna and take a bus to Prague for a conference. Due to a big storm, my flight had been delayed by an hour and a half. I touched down in Vienna just 30 minutes before the departure of the last bus to Prague. The moment I got off the plane, I ran like crazy through the airport building and jumped into the first taxi on the rank without a second thought.
That was when I met Gunter. I told him where I was going, but he said he hadn't heard of the bus station. I thought my pronunciation was the problem, so I explained again more slowly, but he still looked confused. When I was about to give up, Gunter fished out his little phone and rang up a friend. After a heated discussion that lasted for what seemed like a century, Gunter put his phone down and started the car.
Finally, with just two minutes to spare we rolled into the bus station. Thankfully, there was a long queue (队列) still waiting to board the bus. Gunter parked the taxi behind the bus, turned around, and looked at me with a big smile on his face. "We made it," he said.
Just then I realised that I had zero cash in my wallet. I flashed him an apologetic smile as I pulled out my Portuguese bankcard. He tried it several times, but the card machine just did not play along. A feeling of helplessness washed over me as I saw the bus queue thinning out.
At this moment, Gunter pointed towards the waiting hall of the bus station. There, at the entrance, was a cash machine. I jumped out of the car, made a mad run for the machine, and popped my card in, only to read the message: "Out of order. Sorry."

I ran back to Gunter and told him the bad news. He looked at me in disbelief, asking me what to do. Flashing him another apologetic smile, I begged him for a delayed payment. “If I miss this last bus to Prague, I’ll be late for the conference which is so important that I can’t afford to miss it!” I explained. “May I have your phone number? I will call you and return the money I owe you. I promise I will keep my word or you keep my watch!” I added, handing him my watch as well as my business card. Gunter accepted my business card but rejected my watch. He wrote down his phone number and gave it to me. “Just keep your promise, Sir.” A feeling of gratitude washed over me as I heard his words. Giving him a firm handshake, I jumped out of the car, made a mad run for the bus, and jumped onto it just before its departure.
Four days later, when I was back in Vienna, I called Gunter as promised. He picked me up at the bus station where he had dropped me off four days before. Beaming a warm smile at him, I gave him a big hug the moment I saw him. We chatted happily on the way to the airport. I told him that thanks to his generosity and timely help, everything had gone smoothly. When he stopped his taxi outside the airport, I paid him for the “double car ride”, back and forth from the airport to the bus station, together with a generous tip that he turned down. I also gave him an attractive souvenir I had bought at Prague, which he accepted with delight. We became good friends and kept in touch with each other regularly. I felt blessed to have such a warm-hearted friend like Gunter.

第二部分 模拟演练
1.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。(2025·山东模拟预测)
It was a sunny Saturday morning. Tom, a passionate hiker, set out on a trail in the mountains. The path was narrow but well-marked, winding through thick forests and across bubbling brooks (小溪). As he walked deeper into the mountains, he noticed the sky gradually becoming cloudy.
Suddenly, a strong gust of wind blew through the trees, making them sway violently. Tom realized a storm was approaching. He quickened his pace, looking for shelter. Just then, he saw a small, abandoned cabin (小木屋) by the side of the trail. Its roof was partially damaged, but it was better than nothing. Tom rushed inside and started to look around. It was dirty and filled with spider webs, but in a corner, he found an old flashlight. He hoped it still worked.
As the storm hit, the rain poured down in sheets and thunder roared. Lightning flashed, lighting up the dark interior of the cabin. Tom sat on the floor, waiting for the storm to pass. After what seemed like hours, the rain finally began to ease. Tom decided to head back home before it got dark.
He stepped out of the cabin and started walking back along the trail. But the storm had caused several landslides, blocking parts of the path. Tom had to carefully climb over rocks and fallen trees. As he was making his way, he heard a faint cry for help. It seemed to be coming from a nearby ravine (沟壑).
Tom stopped and listened carefully. The cry came again, more desperate this time. He knew he had to find out where it was coming from. He tied a rope he had brought to a solid tree near the edge of the ravine and slowly started to go down to a lower level, using the flashlight to guide his way.

The girl looked up at him with frightened eyes and said that she had slipped and fallen while trying to find shelter during the storm. She had twisted her ankle and couldn’t walk. Tom comforted her, telling her not to worry. He examined her ankle and found that it was swollen but not broken. He took off his jacket and wrapped it around the girl to keep her warm.
Then, Tom picked up the girl and started to climb back up the ravine. The rope helped them, but it was still a tough task. The wet and slippery rocks made it a challenge. But he kept going. Finally, they reached the top of the ravine and got to the entrance of the mountain. Tom saw a car there and waved for help. The driver rushed over and took the girl to get medical attention. Jameson Lobb, a 24-year-old investment banker from Toronto, had just started his new job on Wall Street. He was sharing a New York City apartment with his college friend, Raphael Jafri, an artificial intelligence engineer. One lunchtime, while working out on Pier (水上码头) 15, overlooking the East River, Lobb suddenly froze. “Someone’ s in the water,” he said. Without hesitation, he climbed over the rail and jumped into the cold, polluted river, still wearing his shoes.
Jafri didn’t see the victim but trusted Lobb’s instincts. “Maybe he saw someone in trouble,” he thought. “Or maybe he needs my help.” Without delay, Jafri kicked off his shoes and dove in after his friend.
Lobb reached the unconscious man first. He was middle-aged, well-dressed, and weighed about 200 pounds. The man was sinking fast, already three feet below the surface. Lobb dove down, grabbed him, and kicked upward until they both resurfaced. By then, Jafri had arrived. Together, they floated the man on his back, with Jafri supporting his shoulders and Lobb holding his hips and knees. The water was swirling (旋动), and their muscles burned as they struggled to pull the heavy, lifeless body toward the pier.
The man’s skin was blue, and he wasn’t breathing. When they finally reached Pier 15, they faced another challenge: how to get out. The pier’s deck was 10 feet above them, and the water’s surface was covered in sharp shellfish. Jafri, barefoot, couldn’t climb without injuring himself.
Suddenly, the man stirred (微动), breathing again. In his confusion, he lashed out, hitting Jafri in the face before slipping back into unconsciousness. The two friends, exhausted and struggling, now had to find a way to save themselves and the man they had risked everything to rescue.

The Unexpected Help
It was a cold, gloomy afternoon in early November. Mia, a 17-year-old high school student, was rushing to catch the last bus home after a long day at school. Her mind was preoccupied with a challenging math test she had just completed. The wind was biting, and the sky had been threatening rain all day. She had forgotten her umbrella at home, and now, as she stood at the bus stop, she could feel the first drops of rain falling, chilling her skin.
Mia sighed, pulling her jacket tighter around her body. The cold made her shiver, and she wished she had remembered to bring the umbrella. Her parents were both working late, and she didn’t have enough money for a taxi. The thought of walking home in this weather made her feel miserable. The last thing she wanted was to get soaked and catch a cold. She glanced down at her phone, but the bus app showed no sign of the bus arriving anytime soon.
As she waited, her mind wandered back to the pressures of school. She had been struggling with her grades recently, and the thought of facing another disappointed look from her parents made her stomach churn. Just as the rain began to fall more heavily, a car pulled up beside her. The window rolled down, and a man in his early thirties, dressed in a business suit, called out to her. “Excuse me, are you waiting for the bus?”
Mia looked up, surprised by the sudden question. She hadn’t expected anyone to speak to her, especially not a stranger. She nodded cautiously. “Yes, I am.”
The man smiled kindly, noticing her discomfort: “It looks like it’s going to rain heavily. I’m heading in the same direction. Would you like a ride to the next bus stop? It’s not safe to stand out here in this weather.”
Mia hesitated. She had always been taught to be careful with strangers, but the man seemed genuinely concerned, and the rain was coming down harder. After a brief pause, she nodded. “Okay, thank you.”

Mr. Johnson listened attentively, offering words of encouragement. His kind voice and friendly manner made her feel at ease.
Before she knew it, they had reached the next bus stop. Mia was reluctant to leave. She thanked Mr. Johnson sincerely, her eyes shining with gratitude. At this festive time of the year when November turns to December and Christmas approaches, an incident from the past surfaces in my mind, a moment that inspired me to always seek out opportunities to lend a helping hand.
It was nearly twenty years ago, a period when my children were still in their teenage years full of vitality and constantly evolving preferences. I had grown tired of attempting to predict their Christmas wishes, so each year, we took a long car trip to a Shopping Mall. There, I gave them each an envelope stuffed with cash, allowing them to choose exactly what their hearts desired: This specific year, I had thoughtfully saved an extra hundred dollars, intending to treat myself to a few gifts. However, as I walked the length of the Mall, I found myself unable to find anything that truly resonated (产生共鸣) with me.
As we finally climbed into the car, ready to depart, I started the engine and began navigating towards the main road. It was then, amidst the hum of traffic and the glow of streetlights, that I caught sight of her — a homeless woman standing by the roadside. She looked much older than her age. She was dressed in a torn, threadbare coat. er gray hair was tangled (缠结) and clumped together in a messy mass. Her face was chapped (皲裂的) from the winter wind. But the thing that struck me most was her eyes. She had the saddest eyes that I had ever seen.
“Mom, look at that lady,” one of my children said softly, her voice tinged with concern.

“I see her,” I replied, slowing the car to a stop. I opened the car door and stepped outside. As I approached the homeless woman, she looked up, her sad eyes meeting mine with a mixture of hope and skepticism. I felt a pang of guilt wash over me as I realized how easily I had forgotten about the less fortunate during this festive season. “Excuse me,” I called out gently, “We have some money and some food in the car. Would you like some help?” My children, sensing the significance of the moment, hustled over in a rush as well, their faces alight with curiosity and compassion.
The woman hesitated for a moment, but eventually agreed. Her voice trembled as she whispered, “Thank you, thank you so much.” My children quickly grabbed the bags of food and the envelope of money that I had prepared, handing them to her with genuine smiles. The woman clutched the gifts close to her chest, her eyes brimming with tears of appreciation. “God bless you,” she murmured, with heartfelt sincerity. In that brief encounter, I felt a profound sense of fulfillment, knowing that we had made a small but meaningful difference in someone’s life during the holiday season.

“Hey, Isaac! ” Dayna said. There was a touch of awkwardness in her voice. “Feeling ready for this year’s baking competition? ” Dayna’s initiative greetings really surprised me.
“Do I look worried? ” I forced a polite smile. To be honest, I had been hoping to fix our relationship but worried about being turned down and making things worse.
Dayna and I used to be best friends. Our shared love for baking brought us together, leading us to join Mrs Cooper’s baking classes. We always supported each other during the lessons, which greatly enhanced our baking skills. Last year, I cheered for her to win the championship, but we were in such an embarrassing situation just because of an argument.
“Prepare to be amazed, ” I said. She shot me a doubtful look. “We’ll see. ” Today was the day of this year’s competition, whose theme was “cupcakes”. We entered the kitchen at the Students’ Baking Club, where we attended baking classes every Saturday. Family and friends filled a makeshift seating area. After explaining the competition consisted of two rounds, Mrs. Cooper announced the official start of the competition. Immediately, all the contestants quickly dived into their work.
As I was working on my creations, I couldn't help glancing (瞥见) at Dayna now and then because I was so used to checking on her when baking. Dayna, on the other hand, was completely focused. Her hands were moving skillfully as she measured, mixed, and poured. She didn’t seem to be affected by our current relationship at all, or maybe she was just better at hiding it.
Everything went very well. Soon, Mrs. Cooper announced that Dayna, two other contestants, and I were advancing to the final round. In this round, I got right into my zone. But I quickly realized I hadn’t packed the chocolates that I used for decorating. It was my magic weapon for winning! Sweat rolling down my face, I didn’t know what to do.

Without hesitation, she walked over to my table and handed me a bag of chocolates. “Here, you can use these,” she said with a smile. “We’re friends, aren’t we?” Her words warmed my heart and made me realize how much I had missed our friendship.
