Here are CNN Travel's 4 selections for the greatest American food dishes:
Barbecue
People enjoy barbecue around the world, but Americans have taken a collective passion
for it to the next level.
Four classical, regional styles:Carolinas (where they've gone whole pig for pork);Texas
(where beef is king);Memphis (where it's all about ribs and rubs);and Kansas City (where

Peanut butter was first introduced at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago
and became popular in tea rooms.
The first known PB&J(peanut butter and jelly)sandwich recipe was published in 1901 in

On the last days of July,I moved to a flat in Brixton and joined those with a garden for
the first time.
Before moving,I lived in a flat surrounded by a small plot of woodland nearby. There
were a good six weeks during which the dawn chorus()was so loud that waking up at
5 a.m.was a daily routine.Watching the birds became a soap opera I was deeply invested in.
In Brixton, though, all I could hear was traffic.
Although I knew clearly that cities are not strongholds of naturalism, and that nature is
always there waiting for me to find it,it still took me a while to get used to the fact that I had
to walk more than five minutes to find a green space.
It was for this reason that I turned to gardening.I'm not a formally trained gardener;I
taught myself on a concrete balcony, four stories up on a hill in Camberwell in my mid-20s.
The only garden I had previously had access to as an adult,in Hackney at the start of my
career, was used for parties, barbecues and playing with the neighbor's cat.
Filled with blind enthusiasm and curiosity,I picked up plants from supermarkets and
flower markets, often killing them out of love and then starting all over again.I often spent
whole weekends in that small space. The balcony had a good view:one of London's shining
skylines beneath high skies that changed color and cloud by the minute. But it was so small
that you had to look closely, and looking closely is an essential part of enjoying nature,
wherever you find it.And to be out on the balcony allowed me to care about things that were
bigger than my career, relationship or sense of self. When all three started to waver ()
it was gardening-and nature more broadly-that enabled me to find a new way of life.

Before your favorite produce arrives at the grocery store,it must be carefully harvested
and kept across long time.A recent review suggests new temperature measuring technologies
could make that process much simpler, amid growing agricultural ehallenges fueled by a
changing climate.
Maintaining temperature, wet, and light is critical to ensuring fruit and vegetables don't
go bad or worsen rapidly.Higher temperature is the root of adverse outcomes like ahead
rotting,so monitoring these changes quickly and accurately is key.
The researchers say thermal imaging()technology could help control temperatures
before and after harvesting fruit and vegetables."Measuring temperature in food processing
environments has to be done right, says Kevin Mis Solval, lead author of the study and
associate professor in the University of Georgia's College of Agricultural and Environmental
Sciences.
Mis Solval evaluated the technology as a tool for rapidly sensing sudden temperature
changes in crops in real time..By collecting infrared(红s外线的)radiation of fruit and
vegetables, thermal imaging technology can estimate temperature without touch.
"Once you harvest, the process of rotting starts right there,so in some instances a rapid
cooling process is very critical for extending the shelf life of fresh produce,Mis Solval says.
"If this cooling process is not done correctly, then the shelf life of some fruit and vegetables is
significantly shorter.
Currently, farmers and harvesters use conventional thermometer()to capture the
temperature of one or two items. But that process is not only time-consuming but potentially
damaging to the product.Touching fruit and vegetables slightly for an accurate temperature
reading can cause minor damage and increase the risk of cross-pollution.
Thermal imaging technology has been effective in evaluating the quality of seeds and food
safety, but this is the first time it has been considered for such a key part in the pre-and post-
harvest processes of fresh produce. This type of technology could make or break the quality of
produce you put in your shopping basket.Items with a shorter shelf life have less of a chance
to reach the marketplace. The technology is making sure quality produce reaches the final
consumer.

People are generally bad at producing random actions, but now it seems that we are all
uniquely bad in our own way.
Psychologists already know that we struggle with randomness-ask people to name a
random color, and a majority will say "blue",while the most frequent answer for a random
number between 1 and 10 is 7.
To understand if this failure at randomness varies across individuals,Tal Boger at Johns
Hopkins University and his colleagues asked 143 people to randomly select numbers from 1 to
9,and separately choose one of nine boxes displayed in a three-by-three grid().For each
task, the participants had to make a total of 250 random choices.
The researchers found they could use a computational model to predict the supposedly
random choices of boxes based on that person's choice of numbers.Roughly a year later,
when participants were asked back to repeat the tasks, the researchers could still predict their
choices."We found that using someone's year-old data,we could predict what they're doing,
both within a task, and across tasks, says Boger."We were all really surprised at just how
stable these behaviors were over time. It's showing this really rich, unique behavior across
people.
"This suggests that our minds contain a process of randomness generation which we tap
into when producing random'sequences, says Christopher Benwell in Scotland."Because
this process is stable over time and tasks,if we know someone's random decisions at one point
in time,we may be able to predict their 'random'decisions in the future.
Benwell points out this could have significant effects, both in terms of trying to predict
how people react in areas such as game theory, and in the small details of our lives."This
could potentially make human-generated passwords,data encryption()and exploration
patterns more predictable than we would hope,"he says."It is important for us to be aware
of this so that we can avoid being predictable when we don't want to be.
32.What is a common challenge people face when producing random actions?
A.They follow the crowd blindly.
B.They fail to generate a truly random outcome.
C.They often forget their previous random decisions.
D.They have a limited range of choices without proper guidance.
33.What did the research find?
A.People behave the same way when facing a task.
B.Random decisions seem to be predictable.
C.A person's random choices vary with their age.
D.A computational model can change people's choices.
【单科模拟综合卷(一)·英语第5页(共8页)】
34.What do Benwell's words imply?
A.Human-generated passwords are more secure.
B.Random decisions could improve the accuracy of data.
C.We could be spied on through our random actions.
D.Randomness is affected by some details of our everyday lives.
35.What does the text mainly talk about?
A.People's difficulty in making random actions and its influence.
B.Psychologists'methods of studying randomness generation.
C.The reasons why people fail to produce truly random outcomes.
D.The stability of the randomness generation process over time.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
We tend to think that our success is limited because of lack of money, time, and energy,
but this is not necessarily true.Lack of self-worth is often the biggest roadblock on our path
to living a fulfilling life. Not all of us recognize our individual worth and the contributions we
make to the world.36
It might seem natural to measure your value by your income, physical appearance, job
title,or social media popularity.37 Because these aspects of your life can change at any
moment,it's more useful to consider inner values such as compassion, generosity, leadership,
respect, and kindness.38 We all have a self-talk that points out our shortcomings and
failures.Whenever you begin criticizing yourself, stop and pause for a minute.Consider the
virtue of what this voice is telling you.Is what you hear an objective fact?Is it useful and
kind?If the answer is no.then this criticism is not worth paying attention to.
You alone are responsible for your self-worth.Regardless of other people's words,
thoughts, and opinions about you,you can still choose how you view yourself.39 Don't
wait for people to confirm your value.Instead,do it with your internal dialogue and your
actions.
We all mess up sometimes-it's part of being human.40 It's easy to extend kindness
and forgiveness to others, but you have to do yourself the same favor. There's no point in
worrying about your mistakes or upsetting over the not-so-good decisions from the past.Self-
compassion is about believing that you are worthy of love regardless of what you do or fail to
do.
A.Don't let your inner critic rule your thoughts.
B.What matters is what you think about yourself
C.All these do not determine your value and self-worth.
D.But when you do you must forgive yourself and let it go.
E.Treat yourself with the love and care that others give you.
F.Pay attention to the perceptions about where you should be.
G.Nevertheless,you can build self-worth by practicing self-care.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Many years ago,when I worked as a psychologist at a children's institution in England,I
met a young boy named David, whose story would change the way I viewed my role in helping
others. One autumn day,David arrived at my office, pacing nervously in the waiting room.
His face was pale as if he carried the weight of the world on his shoulders.
David's head teacher had referred him to me,"This boy is very sad and depressed. He
refuses to talk to others. Can you help?"As I looked at David,I felt both sympathy and
helplessness. How could I help him?Sometimes, there are tragedies that no amount of
psychology can fix,and no words can fully express.Sometimes, the only thing you can do is
listen,without judgment or expectation.
For our first two sessions,David didn't speak a word.On the second visit,as David
prepared to leave,I gently placed my hand on his shoulder. He didn't pull away, but he didn't
look at me either."Come back next week,if you like,"I said softly.I hesitated before
adding,"I know it hurts.
David returned the next week, and we began to play chess. There was no conversation,
just the quiet clicking of pieces on the board.I allowed David to win once or twice, not
because I thought it would help him,but because it seemed to give him a small sense of
accomplishment. Each Wednesday afternoon,David arrived early, setting up the chessboard
before I even had the chance to sit down.He never spoke, never made eye contact, but his
presence in the room spoke volumes.I began to believe that, perhaps,he just needed someone
to share his pain with.
Just like spring,he gave me an unexpected surprise.Just as I was thinking about how to
take the next step,David looked up,a small but genuine smile playing at the corners of his
lips."It's your turn,"he said,breaking the silence.

1.续写词数应为150左右:
