Sarah and her best friend, Alex, loved exploring the forest near their neighborhood. One day, while they were exploring through the woods, Sarah found a shiny rock under the leaves. Excitedly, she said to Alex, “Look at what I found! It looks like a valuable diamond (钻石). Promise not to tell anyone! It’s just a secret between you and me.” Alex agreed to keep the secret.
On their way home, Sarah and Alex met their classmate, Emily. Alex couldn’t hold back his excitement and told Emily about the “treasure”. Emily wanted to see it, but Sarah refused. She reminded Alex of their promise. However, Emily’s younger brother, Jack, happened to hear their conversation and spread the news to everyone in the neighborhood.
Soon, neighbors began to visit Sarah’s house, hoping to see the “treasure”. They knocked on the door one by one. Sarah didn’t know what to do. Her mom came out to see what was happening. She told the neighbors that the rock was not as special as they thought. It was just a common quartz (石英). The neighbors were understanding and soon left with smiles on their faces.
After Alex knew it, he said to Sarah, “______.” Sarah smiled and said. “It’s OK, Alex. Everyone makes mistakes. We should always keep our promises in the future.”

Have you ever been burned by a pie from KFC or McDonald’s? Many people on social media say that when the pie crust (外壳) feels cool enough to eat, the filling inside is still “as hot as lava (岩浆)”.
To find out how hot the filling can be, a team in China did a test. They found that the average temperature of the filling can reach 64℃ when the pies are taken out of the oven. According to China Science Communication, they suggest temperature for food is around 10℃ to 40℃, and food that is over 60℃ can hurt our throat.
The reason for this is that the filling is thick and not exposed (暴露) to air. Once heated, it keeps heat for a long time. The test shows that after a pie from KFC has been out of the oven for 10 minutes, the temperature inside still reaches 45.1℃.
The temperature difference can be explained using a physics concept (概念) called specific heat capacity (比热容). This tells us how much heat is needed to change the temperature of 1 gram of something by 1℃. Something with a low specific heat capacity is like a small cup; it doesn’t hold much heat and cools down fast. Things with a high specific heat capacity take longer to cool down. Usually, liquids (液体) hold heat longer than solids (固体). As a pie’s filling has more water than its crust, it takes more time for the filling to fully cool down.
9. What is the problem with pies from KFC or McDonald’s?
A. The fillings taste like lava.
B. They cool down too quickly.
C. The hot fillings can burn you.
D. The crusts become too hard when cooled.
10. What is the safe temperature for food according to China Science Communication?
A. From -10℃ to 40℃. B. From 10℃ to 40℃.
C. From 25℃ to 60℃. D. From 45.1℃ to 64℃.
11. The main reason why the pie filling stays hot longer than the crust is that ________.
A. the filling is made of special food
B. the pie filling is thicker than the crust
C. the filling gets hot faster when cooked
D. the filling has higher specific heat capacity
12. What is the text mainly about?
A. What specific heat capacity is.
B. How KFC pies will be improved.
C. Why pie fillings cool down slowly.
D. What helps cool down a pie quickly.

People always say the music from their younger years is the best compared to other times. This may be because of something that can be called the “memory bump” (记忆隆起).
According to the BBC, the memory bump means that our memories from ages 10 to 30 are very strong. This time heavily shapes our interests, such as our favorite books, films, sports stars, and especially music. This is because there is a “safe” place in our brain to store the musical memories. The place is well protected against aging problems. As a result, the music we listen to during these years usually has a lasting influence. We usually remember the music in our early years more fondly (充满感情地) than music from other times in our lives.
More importantly, “music is episodic (有许多片段的),” Professor Robert Cutietta at the University of Southern California said. “If you look at an artwork or something, you can look at it and leave. But music is over time.”
Music from our younger years mixes happy and sad feelings when we listen to it. When the songs can be connected to your experience, memories of those experiences will come back as you listen to the songs again.
Sometimes, with a change in experience, the sadness you felt before when listening to a song can later turn into joy. This can explain why listening to something from a difficult time in your younger life can bring a feeling of relief now.
13. When are our memories very strong?
A. From ages 5 to 10. B. From ages 10 to 30.
C. When we are safe. D. When we are happy.
14. Why do we remember the music from our younger years?
A. Because a more protected area in the brain stores it.
B. Because we listen to it more often than other music.
C. Because it is much easier to understand and remember.
D. Because young people have better memories than the old.
15. What idea does Professor Robert Cutietta probably agree with about music?
A. Music from our younger years is the best.
B. Listening to music is like looking at an artwork.
C. We can forget music from childhood very quickly.
D. Listening to music can make us think of our old times.
16. What does the underlined word “relief” probably mean in the last paragraph?
A. Sadness. B. Pain. C. Relaxation. D. Interest.

Even on a normal weekday, many people crowd into Kitty Zoo, a pet cafe in Changzhou, Jiangsu. They come here to meet its biggest star, a cute capybara (水豚) named Jilizhazha.
The cafe’s 35-year-old founder (创始人) said that few people kept unusual pets like lizards (蜥蜴) and snakes before. But now, more and more people are keeping exotic pets.
“Exotic pets” are animals that are far different from traditional ones like cats and dogs. On the lifestyle-sharing platform (平台) many people shared their pets like capybaras, raccoons (浣熊) and alpacas (羊驼).
A 23-year-old exotic pet fan started raising raccoons at home in 2024. He posts videos of his raccoons on the Internet and has many followers.
Raising exotic pets can bring special experiences, but we must be careful before bringing these animals home.
The owner of the raccoons said that raccoons are shy and may hurt people when they are afraid, so they need to be socialized from a young age. Although he has raised exotic pets before, he still finds these animals take months to become comfortable with humans. “You need to be patient and work hard,” he explained.
Jilizhazha is very cute, but his fans must remember that every exotic pet needs people to work hard to give them special care.
