After some time, I felt very tired. The farmer wanted me to do twelve shows a day. I began to feel ill. One day, the queen heard about me and wanted to see me. The farmer took me to the palace and the queen liked me so much that she invited me to live with her. She paid the farmer a thousand pieces of gold to keep me! I was happy to have a life different from the past but something made me sad.
“Why do you look so sad, Gulliver?” asked the queen.
“I have to say goodbye to Glumdalclitch,” I replied. “She is the only person who has cared for me in the past months, and my only friend on Brobdingnag.”
After hearing my words the queen said Glumdalclitch could stay with me. I felt safe and happy. The queen treated me well and every Wednesday I ate with the king and queen. They were curious about my life in England and Europe. The king asked me about the laws of my country and its government and religions.
I explained that though our system worked well, there were still fights and wars because of greed (贪婪) and dishonesty.
The king laughed loudly and said, “How important you little people think you are,” he said. “You tell me you have many books about how to govern your country. Are you all so stupid? Don’t you know that to govern any country all you need is common sense (常识)?! Your people are dishonest and there are wars, revolutions and rebellions. This means that your system does not work as well as you think.”
He continued to laugh and concluded (总结) by saying, “Common sense, my dear Gulliver, common sense! Don’t the people who govern your country have any of this?”
I felt very offended at first. But later, when I was alone, I thought about it and I understood he was probably right. Also my small size seemed to put me and my country into a completely different perspective (视角). We seemed very unimportant and I thought of the Lilliputians: I sometimes found them to be a little funny.
I later told the king, “You must not be influenced by my size, sir.” I said. “In my country there are many tall people who are quite stupid and many short people who are very smart. This is true of everything. A long book may be boring and a short book may be a masterpiece.” I am happy to see the king agreed with me on this.
“Size and looks do not matter.” I concluded.
27. What does the underlined word “offended” most probably mean in the article?

For most tourists, travel is often about visiting famous places, buying souvenirs (纪念品), and following well-planned timetables. However, for China’s Gen Z, the meaning of travel has changed. They don’t just want to enjoy the sightseeing. Instead, this generation sees travel as a way of self-expression, a chance to have special experiences to show who they are. Tourist areas are now paying more attention to the feelings and needs of young travellers.
This change has been noticed. Dai Bin, the president of the China Tourism Academy, points out that young people in China are now travelling to “please themselves” rather than “please others”. Their feelings matter more than just visiting famous places.
Dai says that trends (趋势) like planning their own trips and designing their own experiences are becoming popular. Young travellers want to move faster, go further, and explore more freely.
Take the ice and snow tourism as an example. Young travellers are no longer happy with simply enjoying the views of snow—they want to take part in ice and snow activities. During the winter season in Harbin, besides the traditional snow and ice art, going down ice slides, having fun in the music parties at ice and snow theme parks and the city’s “disco bars” nightlife experience are becoming more and more popular. Tourist areas need to change their plans to follow the direction of travelling habits.
Hengdian World Studios in Zhejiang Province is a big place where movies are made. It is attracting young visitors by letting them experience what it’s like to be in a movie. With activities like “Step into the Movies”, visitors can see how movies are made from start to finish.
The studios use famous scenes from movies and TV shows to create fun experiences. This lets visitors enjoy the whole area in just one hour without feeling bored. It makes their visit more exciting and fun, like they are part of a movie.
The growth of immersive travel is not just about movie experiences.
In Luoyang, Henan Province, young travellers wear Hanfu to feel like they are part of history. Some local families work with traditional skilled artists to offer workshops where visitors can learn skills like paper-cutting and dough figurine making (捏面人). This makes their travel experiences more personal and interesting.
Gen Z’s travel habits are changing, and tourist areas are creating new ways to give immersive and personal experiences that help them feel closer to the culture and history. Mixing old traditions with modern activities is changing the future of tourism in China, making trips more exciting and fun for young visitors.

The beautiful handiwork of leaf-vein embroidery (叶脉绣) in Tongren, Guizhou province, has made Guizhou embroidery famous in China.
Leaf-vein embroidery dates back to the Song Dynasty. It has been used to send information by several ethnic groups (民族) in the southwestern region.
Yang Li, an inheritor (传承人) of this skill, has brought together the traditional embroidery of the Miao, Tujia and Dong ethnic groups in the leaves. She also mixed traditional beauty with modern skill.
Leaf-vein embroidery artwork is highly valued because it is difficult to make. The key steps cover picking and drying the leaves, then designing (设计) and embroidering the pattern (图案). Leaves from plants in the thick forests of the Fanjing Mountain area in Tongren provide the best material. After the leaves naturally soften in about 20 days, they are fumigated (熏蒸). Then patterns, with ideas from ancient stories and nature, are drawn on the veins.
However, because leaf-vein embroidery needs long and hard work, it is not very easy to keep this traditional skill alive.
“During my lifetime, I feel I have a duty (职责). I should do it better and pass on this skill.” Yang said. In 2022, Yang set up a training centre and has since shared leaf-vein embroidery through short videos with her student Yang Xinyu.
“Leaf-vein embroidery is a treasure. As a young person influenced (影响) by my teacher Yang Li, I have kept on learning this skill and hope that more young people will return to their hometowns to carry on this skill.” Yang Xinyu said.

But later when I was alone, I thought about it and I understood he was probably right.

A. Enjoying the snow views. B. Going down ice slides.

32. Why is Hengdian World Studios popular with young visitors?
A. Because it offers many chances to meet movie stars.
B. Because the ticket price is not too cheap or too expensive.
C. Because it has the best movie-making machines and skills in China.
D. Because young visitors can experience the process of movie-making.
33. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The traditional ways of travelling in China.
B. The growth of ice and snow tourism in Harbin.
