Engineers from MIT and China are working on a project to turn seawater into drinking water. They are using a special device (装置) inspired by the ocean and powered by the sun.
The team of scientists wrote about a new invention in a scientific journal called Joule. They are developing a system that uses sunlight to clean seawater and make it safe to drink.
The device’s special design makes the water move in swirling patterns (呈漩涡状), like how it moves in the ocean. The sunlight heats up the water and makes it evaporate (蒸发), leaving the salt behind. The vapor (蒸汽) then turns back into water and becomes safe to drink. The salt is constantly washed away so it doesn’t cause any problems.
The engineers project (预计) that when they make this system the size of a small suitcase, it can produce about 4 to 6 liters of drinking water per hour. It will work for many years before needing repairs or new parts. With its size and effectiveness (效率), this system could provide drinking water that is cheaper than tap water.
Zhang Lenan, a research scientist at MIT’s Device Research Laboratory, says, “We are really excited because, for the first time ever, we have a chance to make water using only sunlight, and it could be cheaper than regular tap water.”
36. The special device can turn seawater into drinking water by ________.
A. other devices B. the seawater itself C. the wind D. the solar energy
37. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “inspired” in Paragraph 1?
A. 制造 B. 淹没 C. 赋予灵感 D. 受驱使
38. What does the third paragraph mainly tell us?
A. The salt can’t cause any problems.
B. It is easy to change seawater into fresh water.
C. How the device changes seawater into drinking water.
D. The device can change seawater into drinking water without the sun.
39. What’s the purpose of the fourth paragraph?
A. To tell us the device plays a very important role.
B. To tell us the device can help people produce tap water.
C. To tell us the device is the size of a small suitcase.
D. To tell us the device will be practical and long-lasting.
40. What does Zhang Lenan think about making water using only sunlight?
A. It will have a bright future.
B. It will be as cheap as regular tap water.
C. It will make people no longer short of water.
D. It will make the sea have less water in the future.

A Heartwarming Experience in Volunteering
Last weekend, I joined a community clean-up activity.
It was a sunny day, and our team wore bright red vests. First, we picked up litter in the park. I found a plastic bottle stuck under a bush. It felt cold and slippery when I grabbed it. Then, we painted over graffiti on the walls. The paintbrush left colorful strokes, turning dull surfaces into cheerful art. An elderly lady smiled and said, “Thank you for making our neighborhood brighter.” Her words warmed my heart. In the end, my hands were dirty, but I felt proud.
Volunteering taught me that small actions can create big changes. Every time I pass by that clean park now, I remember: helping others is the best reward.
