With people running around, Zhang Heng stood still, thinking quickly. “There must be a way to know when this will happen,” he thought. He had seen many earthquakes (地震) in his life, and each time, people couldn’t do anything. But this time, Zhang Heng decided to find a method.
For days, he could think of nothing else but the earthquake. He was a man who loved science and understood the power of nature. After studying the stars, the sky, and the earth for years, Zhang Heng had an idea—what if there was a machine that could feel earthquakes before they happened?
Without wasting any time, Zhang Heng began to work on his invention. He used bronze (青铜) to create a large container with eight dragon heads, each holding a small ball in its mouth. At the bottom of each dragon, he placed a frog. If an earthquake happened, the shaking would cause the ball to fall into the frog’s mouth, showing the direction of the earthquake.
Months of hard work passed, and one night, Zhang Heng was ready to test his invention. Suddenly, the ground shook again. His heart raced as he rushed to the machine. To his surprise, one of the dragon heads dropped its ball! The ball fell into the frog’s mouth, pointing west. Zhang Heng smiled with excitement. It worked!
A few days later, a strong earthquake hit the west, just as the Seismoscope (地动仪) had shown. People were amazed, and Zhang Heng’s invention saved many lives by giving them a warning before the disaster.

Three students write about a project they have done.
Kemal
For my project, I had to find out about our teeth, mouth and stomach. I had to find pictures of them and explain what happens to food, from the moment we put it in our mouths to when it goes into our stomachs. Then I gave a talk about it all to my class. Writing the project was interesting and I learned a lot about the body, but I didn’t like giving the talk. I felt really worried before I did that.
Dan
I did a project about why and how we get some health problems, such as colds, having a temperature, toothache and pain. With all the information I found, I had to make a web page for teenagers to use. I enjoyed doing the project, especially the talk to my class at the end. After the talk, I gave them a quiz (测试) and they answered everything really well. Perhaps I should be a teacher in the future!
Jerzy
My project was about what you should do when people get ill suddenly or hurt themselves, so it was really useful. For example, I now know how to help a friend who has cut himself badly, or a family member who has broken an arm or a leg. I had to write a ten-page document (文件) for teenagers. I found most of the information I needed online. One thing the project taught me is that I certainly don’t want to be a doctor or a nurse when I’m older!

Table tennis has been played for many years and is popular around the world. The sport is beginner-friendly. But it also keeps a rich level of competitive play. However, it’s difficult for blind people to experience the joy of this sport.
Phoebe Peng, an engineering student in Australia, invented a new system to help the blind play ping-pong using sound. She installed (安装) cameras and loudspeakers on sides of a traditional ping-pong table. As the cameras tracked (追踪) the movement of the ball, a computer program changed that information into sound, which was played through the loudspeakers. The blind players could use the sound to know the ball’s location, and then they could return the ball fast and correctly.
Peng showed her work on December 6 at the Acoustics 2023 Sydney. It was held from December 4 to December 8 at the International Convention Center Sydney.
Although this system worked well, Peng said more study is needed before it can be ready for actual play.” A challenge is the matter of human perception (感知) of sound, said Peng. “What kind of sound should be used? Should the sound be continuous? These are problems we are facing now, but I am sure we can solve them in the near future.”

Strength training, a type of exercise, is used to build strength, power, and endurance (耐力). Many adults do strength training, but is it safe and useful for children? People used to think that strength training was not useful and even dangerous for children, possibly causing injuries that could affect their growth. However, the latest study shows that strength training does improve children’s overall health.
When children do strength training, they get stronger as their muscles (肌肉) grow! The strength training can most likely make them better, faster and stronger. “It is so beneficial for their bodies, like their bones, joints and metabolic (新陈代谢的) health,” says Becca Rigg, a professional trainer at a fitness center. She knows all about the positive effects of strength training. She takes her kids to strength workouts two to three times per week.
“I also love the message teenagers receive when exercising this way: They may feel more confident when they finish such hard and tiring training. It is also rewarding for them to see results. They are, indeed, getting stronger while having a better image,” explains Rigg, “Sometimes they make strength training part of their life and it’s easier for them to get involved in the training later.”
How do kids get started? Just like other activities, it is very important to learn the correct way to do it. For strength training, it is a must to learn from an experienced coach because the coach can make sure children do movements safely and correctly. In the early stage, it is best for teens to simply use their body weight, such as doing push-ups and squats. Bodyweight movements can then be made more difficult by adding equipment or weights, for example, a barbell or dumbbells.
So, let’s cheer our kids on as they lift, pull, and push their way to a stronger future. With our support and care, they’ll grow up ready to take on whatever life throws at them.
68.What does the latest study show about strength training?
69.How often does Becca Rigg take her kids to strength workouts?
70.Why is it a must to learn from an experienced coach?
71.As a teenager, would you like to make strength training part of your life? Why? (Please give two reasons.)
【答案】68.The latest study shows that strength training does improve children’s overall health. 69.She takes her kids to strength workouts two to three times per week. 70.Because an experienced coach can make sure children do movements safely and correctly. 71.Yes, I’d like to. With just a boat, a paddle (桨) and a bit of water, you can experience fun and exercise in a kayak.
Kayaking is a kind of paddling sport, and people often mistake it for canoeing (划独木舟), but they are quite different. Kayakers sit on the floor of the boat while canoeists sit on a bench. Also, kayak paddles have a wide flat part on either end, but canoe paddles have them on only one end.
Within kayaking, there are a few styles that need different levels of skill and fitness. Anyone can enjoy relaxing kayaking, most often paddling on a lake or perhaps a gentle river. Whitewater kayaking is much more exciting because boats travel down fast rivers and even over small waterfalls. Surf kayakers must be both strong-willed and talented as they ride waves on the open ocean.
The difficulty involved with kayaking is transportation—a boat several meters long is not exactly easy to carry around. However, a man who had to leave his kayak behind when moving to a smaller apartment borrowed the idea of Japanese paper folding, and made a new type of special kayak. He could fold it into a very thin pack, allowing the kayak to easily fit in a car. In this way, the problem was perfectly solved.
Kayaking can offer sightseeing opportunities and a good way to exercise certain parts of the body. Paddling is helpful for strengthening the upper body and it requires continuing turning of your main body, giving it some great exercise. Another advantage is that these movements are gentler on the body’s joints and tissues (关节和组织) than running. Kayaking doesn’t just improve the health of the body, though—it also has been shown to make you less stressed as well. With so many benefits, why not head to the closest water and give it a try?

The ground shook suddenly. Houses moved, and people ran into the streets with scare.

63.What can we know about Phoebe Peng?
A.She studies engineering in Australia.
B.She is blind but likes playing ping-pong.
C.She works with the blind in school.
D.She has won many table tennis competitions.
64.How did the blind players know where the ping-pong ball was?
A.By imagining the movement of the ball.
B.By listening to the sound from the speakers.
C.By talking to the speakers of the computer.
D.By communicating with the coach in secret.
65.When did the Acoustics 2023 Sydney end?
A.On December 8. B.On December 6. C.On December 5. D.On December 4.
66.Which of the following would Phoebe Peng probably agree with?
A.The best sport for blind people is table tennis.
B.Sound is the most important thing for blind people.
C.People should invent more new sports for blind people.
D.More study is needed before the new system is used in practice.
67.What does the text mainly talk about?
A.A ping-pong player with excellent skills.
B.A sport that is very popular all over the world.
C.A system invented to help the blind play ping-pong.
D.A science and technology meeting held in Australia.

Lu Ban was born in a common family. His family had been practicing carpentry (木工手艺) for several years. When he was a child, Lu joined his family members in many building projects around the state and he was very quick in learning the family trade. He was crazy about inventing new tools so that people could finish their job quickly.
For example, carpenters (木工) at that time didn’t have saws (锯). So, they had to use axes (斧头) to cut the wood. Of course, that was difficult and the products often turned out to be terrible.

He also invented many other carpentry tools and weapons (武器). Around 450 BC, Lu moved to the State of Chu in today’s Yangtze River Delta area. To help the state fight against its enemies, he invented many useful weapons.
