Mary began to like her life here. Every morning, she went outside after breakfast and spent most of the day in the grounds. The cold wind brought pink to her face. And she finished all of her food each evening. She was much healthier. After dinner, she liked sitting near the fire and talking to Martha.
“Why does Mr. Craven hate the locked garden?” Mary asked once.
“It was Mrs. Craven’s garden and she loved it. She looked after the flowers together with Mr. Craven. No gardeners were allowed in.”
“But what happened?” Mary asked,
“There was an old tree in the garden with a branch (树枝) like a seat. Mrs. Craven often sat there, reading and talking. One day, the branch broke and she fell down. She was badly hurt and died soon. Mr. Craven locked the garden and never talked about it.”
Mary seldom felt sorry for anyone, but now she understood how sad her uncle must be.
The wind roared around the house, and the doors and windows banged. Mary listened, and through the noise, she thought that she heard a child crying.
“Can you hear someone crying?” she asked Martha.
Martha seemed pretty nervous. “No,” she answered. “It’s only the wind or the servant who works in the kitchen. She’s got a toothache. Perhaps she’s crying. I’m going to check if she needs any help.” After the words, Martha left the room quickly.
When Martha left her alone, Mary decided to explore the house. She went quietly along corridors and up and down stairs. In the silence of the house, she heard again the sound of a child crying. She stopped to listen at a door, but then another door opened and Mrs. Medlock came out, “What are you doing here?” she said, and she took Mary by the arm and pulled her away. “Get back to your room at once.”

So far, China has successfully sent many satellites (卫星) and spaceships into space. Space scientists have been inspired (赋予灵感) by the old stories and ancient famous people when giving them names.
Since thousands of years ago, Chinese people have dreamed of going to the moon. Chang’e Flies to the Moon is one of the most popular stories. As you can see, China’s first man-made satellite to the moon was named Chang’e I. More interestingly, the moon rover (探测器) was named after the Jade Rabbit, who is the partner of Chang’e in the story. These old stories carry people’s best wishes and dreams. With the development of science and technology, our scientists have made them come true.
Kua Fu Runs After the Sun is another old folk story. Now, Kua Fu is going with the scientists to “visit” the sun, because we have a space project called Kua Fu Mission.
Besides the ancient stories, space scientists also get ideas from ancient famous people. For example, Mozi, an ancient scientist, found that light travels in a straight line over 2,000 years ago. What he found made space study take a big step at that time. So, China’s first quantum (量子) science satellite was named Mozi, making China the first country in the world to achieve quantum communication between satellites and the ground.
From such simple things as giving names to the satellites, we can see how great our traditional culture is and what influence (影响) it has on our modern science and technology.

C. To introduce the achievements in our science and technology.
D. To tell how traditional Chinese culture influences our space science.
【答案】31. C 32. A 33. D

Tim Berners-Lee is not the most famous inventor (发明家) in the world. However, his invention has changed our lives.
He was born in London, England in 1955. When he was a small boy, Tim was interested in playing with electrical things. He studied science at Oxford University. He made his first computer from an old television at the age of 21. Tim started working on early computers. At that time, they were much bigger than now. He worked in England then Switzerland. Tim was really interested in two things, computers and how the brain works.
How could the brain connect so many facts so quickly? He had to work with people all over the world. They shared information about computers. It was hard to manage all the information. He answered the same questions again and again. It took a lot of time. It was even difficult for computers in the same office in Switzerland to share information. Tim also forgot things easily. Could a computer work like a brain? Could it “talk” to other computers?
There was an Internet already but it was difficult to use. In 1989, Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web (WWW) all by himself. This had a special language that helped computers talk to each other on the Internet. When people wanted to share information with others, they used the World Wide Web. The Internet grew quickly after that.
Tim Berners-Lee doesn’t think he did anything special. He says that all of the ideas about the Internet were already there. All he did was to put them together. He says that many other people worked together to make the Internet what it is today.
Most inventors want to become rich. But Tim gave away the World Wide Web for nothing. He now works in America. He helps people share technology and wants the Internet to be free for everyone to use. Maybe he is the most important but least famous inventor in the world today!

Mary began to like her life here. Every morning she went outside after breakfast and spent most of the day in the grounds.

31. How many old stories in China are mentioned in the passage?
A 1. B. 3. C. 2. D. 4.
32. Which is the right structure of the passage? (①= Paragraph 1 ②= Paragraph 2, …)
A. ①//②③④//⑤ B. ①//②//③④⑤
C. ①//②③④⑤ D. ①//②③//④⑤
33. What’s the writer’s main purpose of writing the passage?
A. To spread traditional Chinese culture.
B. To explain how our scientists develop the space industry.
C. To introduce the achievements in our science and technology.
D. To tell how traditional Chinese culture influences our space science.

34. What was Tim Berners-Lee interested in?
A. Looking for jobs in different cities. B. Talking to people around the world.
C. Studying how to connect computers. D. Exploring how to improve memory.
35. The underlined word “It” in Paragraph 3 refers to “________”.
A. Working on early computers
B. Connecting different facts together
C. Travelling to the office in Switzerland
D. Repeating the answers to the same questions
36. Why is Tim Berners-Lee one of the most important men in the world?
A. He made information sharing on the Internet possible.
B. He made the first computer when he was 21 years old.
C. He helped people understand better how the brain works.
D. He invented the Internet and made it free for everyone to use.
37. In what order did the following events take place?
a. Tim worked in England. b. Tim worked in Switzerland. c. Tim made his first computer. d. Tim invented the World Wide Web. e. Tim studied science at Oxford University.
A. c – e – d – a - b B. e – c – a – b - d
C. c – d – a – e - b D. e – b – a – c - d
