Pork dishes: A taste of two cultures
Growing up in northern England, I often helped my grandmother prepare golden sausage rolls for weekend tea. The sweet smell filled the room as she taught me to put pork meat in thin dough. Last summer in Guangzhou, I saw students making baozi stuffed with pork with their families. ____16____, although separated by thousands of miles, both our cultures share a special connection through pork dishes.

Street food shows the creativity of cooking pork. At London’s Borough Market, crispy pork pies with jelly fillings chuanr have been sold for 200 years. The Chinese calligraphy brush is called “hairy brush”. Just as the name suggests, it has a tube-like upper part and a lower part made of fine hair. The tube of the brush is usually made of bamboo and the lower part is usually made of goat hair. These things can be easily found in our daily life, so you can try to make one yourself. Here are some easy steps for home-made calligraphy brushes.
Step 1: Collect things you need
Start by collecting the necessary materials to make a calligraphy brush. You will need bamboo sticks, high-quality goat hair, silk thread, and a small knife.
Step 2: Prepare the bamboo stick
Cut the bamboo stick to the length you want for your brush. Use sandpaper to make any rough parts smooth (光滑的). In this way, it will be comfortable for you to hold later.
Step 3: Join the hair to the stick
Get some goat hair and cut it as long as you need. Tie the hair tightly with silk thread to the top of the bamboo stick. Make sure the hair stays in place and won’t fall off.
Step 4: Shape the brush tip
Use a sharp knife to shape the hair into a fine point. Cut any unwanted hair to create a better shape, so that it can pick up the right amount of ink when you use it.
Step 5: Let it dry and test
Allow the brush to dry completely before using it. Test it on a piece of paper to see how the ink flows and cut the hair a bit more if needed. Your own home-made calligraphy brush is now ready to use.

Every Sunday morning, Amy goes for a walk in a park near her home. Her favourite place is a lake in the center of the park. Every time she walks by the lake, she sees an old lady sitting there with a small cage beside her.
One morning, she was so curious that she walked over to the old lady. As she got closer, Amy could see there were three turtles slowly walking around the bottom of the cage. The old lady was holding a fourth one in her hand and carefully brushing it.
“Excuse me.” Amy said. “May I ask what you’re doing with these turtles?”
The old lady smiled. “I’m cleaning off their shells.” she replied. “Anything on a turtle’s shell, like algae (藻类) or dirty things reduces the turtle’s ability to take in heat from the sun as well as its ability to swim. It can also damage and weaken the shell over time.”
“Wow! That’s really nice of you” Amy said. “But don’t most fresh water turtles live their whole lives with algae and dirty things hanging from their shells?”
“Yes, sadly, they do,” the old lady replied.
“Well then, don’t you think your time could be better spent? I mean, it is kind of you to do so, but there are fresh water turtles living in lakes all around the world. And 99% of these turtles don’t have kind people like you to help them clean their shells. Can what you do here really make a difference?”

Charity is important. Not only because it can change people’s lives, but also because it can change the world. By giving to charities, we can help those less lucky and support causes (事业) we believe in. Whether you’re looking for a way to give back or just want to learn more about the work of charities, this post is for you.
A charity is an organization that helps people or communities in need. A charity may raise money from common people, companies and governments. Charities usually work on certain areas such as health care, education, disaster relief, and so on.
Charities provide services that are important to people in need: food banks provide food to hungry families; churches help people find cheap places to live in; hospitals provide free basic care to low-income patients; animal charities save homeless pets from certain death and find them new homes... The list is endless. They help improve the lives of millions of people every day.
Charities are good for you too. Helping others is good for your health and well-being. Volunteering for charities makes you feel like you’re making a difference and contributing, which in turn builds a sense of community and reduces loneliness. Volunteering for a charity can also help develop a sense of purpose, build friendships or improve social networks, and increase self-confidence.
Charities don’t just help people. There are also many charities that protect the environment and conserve natural resources. The Nature Conservancy, for example, is a global conservation organization that works to preserve the lands and waters on which all life depends. From checking social media every minute to being lost in computer games, we usually overuse technology. “For many people, a moment without your phone or computer in sight can feel like a lifetime.” the Daily Mail commented.
A computer model called Mindy may make many people think twice. A team from a US company built a three-dimensional (3D) model to show the negative effects technology can have on human bodies in less than 800 years.
“Spending hours looking down at your phone tires your neck and throws your backbone off balance.” explained Caleb Backe, a health and wellness expert (专家) in the US. This, in turn, will make it more difficult for the muscles in our neck to support the head, making our back hunched and our neck wide.
“The way we hold our phones can cause pain in certain muscles of your hands.” Nikola Djordjevic a doctor in Serbia, told the team. It affects the elbows too, making your arm hurt a lot. Scientifically, it is called cubital tunnel syndrome (肘管综合征). That’s why Mindy has a 90-degree elbow, and her hands look like she’s always holding a mobile phone.
Some people also commented that human evolution (进化) may not work this way. They believe that only good changes would be kept over the years. For example, changes that can enable people to live longer, instead of the negative effect of technology.
However, human lifestyles nowadays still cause worries. A model called Emma was built by researchers in the UK in 2019 to show how the way people work at their desks could change them in 20 years.
The research team built Emma based on the health problems mentioned by over 3,000 workers in France, Germany and the UK. Emma’s back stays bent, and her legs are swollen because of the time people spend in front of computers. With little time spent outdoors in the sun, her skin is pale, too.
While Mindy and Emma are just predictions about what may happen in the future, they remind us to think more about tech habits. Experts suggest taking breaks, stretching muscles, and balancing screen time with outdoor activities. After all, evolution is kind to those who get used to changes wisely—not those controlled by devices like phones and computers.
37. What does the underlined word “negative” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Useful. B. Harmful. C. Amazing. D. Hopeless.
38. Why did the researchers create “Mindy” and “Emma”?
A. To introduce future technology.
B. To sell new types of models to doctors.
C. To show possible effects of overusing technology.
D. To explain how technology improves human health.
39. How does the article support its opinion about technology’s effects?
A. By telling stories about future humans.
B. By explaining how human evolution works.
C. By comparing traditional and modern lifestyles.
D. By showing experts’ opinions and research models.
40. Which of the following may the writer agree with?
A. Working outdoors is important. B. More models should be created.
C. Technology will make humans healthier. D. Using technology wisely helps us live better.

“The way we hold our phones can cause pain in certain muscles of your hands.” Nikola Djordjevic, a doctor in Serbia, told the team.
