And you’ll realize that it wouldn’t have happened if not for that previous disappointment.” Mother was right, as I discovered after graduating from college in 1932. I had decided to try for a job in radio, then work my way up to sports announcer. I hitchhiked (搭便车) to Chicago and knocked on the door of every station — and got turned down every time. In one studio, a kind lady told me that in most cases big stations couldn’t risk hiring an inexperienced person. “Go out in the remote areas and find a small station that’ll give you a chance,” she said. I went back home to Dixon, Illinois. While there were no radio-announcing jobs in Dixon, my father said Montgomery Ward had opened a store and wanted a local athlete to manage its sports department. Since Dixon was where I had played high school football, I applied. The job sounded just right for me. But I wasn’t hired. My disappointment must have shown. “Everything happens for the best,” Mom reminded me. Dad offered me the car to hunt for jobs. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport, Iowa. The program director, a wonderful Scotsman named Peter MacArthur, told me they had already hired an announcer. As I left his office, my frustration boiled over (沸溢,发怒). I asked aloud, “How can a fellow get to be a sport announcer if he can’t get a job in a radio station?” I was waiting for the elevator when I heard MacArthur calling, “What was that you said about sports? Do you know anything about football?” Then he stood me before a microphone and asked me to broadcast an imaginary game. The preceding autumn, my team had won a game in the last 20 seconds with a 65-yard run. I did a 15-minute boost to that play, and Peter told me I would be broadcasting Saturday’s game! On my way home, as I have many times since, I thought of my mother’s words: “If you carry on, one day something good will happen. Something wouldn’t have happened if not for that previous disappointment”. 24. What is concluded from the passage is that ________. A the frustration of the author prevented him from performing well at WOC Radio B. both of the author’s parents showed support when he was trying to search for a job C. Peter MacArthur recognize the author’s talent in broadcasting after reading his resume D. the author lost all his hope and courage when he was turned down by Montgomery Ward 25. The reason why the author wasn’t hired in Chicago was probably that ________. A. he showed no confidence at the stations B. there were no jobs available at the stations C. he had no experience in radio broadcasting D. there were too many people competing with him 26. What does the word “boost” in the last but one paragraph mean? A. requirement. B. amazement. C. enjoyment. D. encouragement. 27. What lesson can you learn from the author’s experience in the passage? A. Through storms come rainbows. B. Prevention is better than cure. C. Well begun is half done. D. Rome was not built in a day. C Do you have frightening dreams while sleeping? According to an email interview by clinical psychologist and sleep expert Dr. Michael Breus, roughly 5 percent of the general population has at least one bad dream per week. Nightmares typically happen during REM sleep, during the middle and later parts of the night. There is no exact explanation for nightmares, but Breus says it’s possible that they help the brain practise, prepare for and even predict difficult or dangerous experiences in waking life. Of course, it’s possible that nightmares, like dreams in general, don’t have a primary function — that they’re a by-product of other activities in the body. But most sleep scientists think that dreams and nightmares exist for some purposes. One study found the most common nightmare was falling, followed by dreams of being chased, feeling lost, and feeling trapped. Then why do nightmares happen? “Certain circumstances and characteristics make some people more likely to have nightmares than others,” says sleep medicine specialist Dr. Barry Krakow. He thinks people who’ve been traumatized (使受精神创伤) are certainly at a higher risk of nightmares Examples are offered of those who have suffered criminal attacks, or who have been in life-threatening accidents. People with some degree of sensitivity in their biological make-up are also more likely to have bad dreams, so they’re more common in people who suffer from anxiety or depression, or who use excess drugs or alcohol. The traditional belief often has it that nightmares are the result of eating too much rich food before bedtime, but it is still uncertain whether this is true. One study from 2015 did find a link between eating dairy or hot foods before bedtime and having disturbing dreams, but the study authors noted that this couldn’t be proven definitely because the data was self-reported and there were a lot of other factors to consider. However, research in recent decades has shown that people who suffer from sleep disorders are also more likely to have nightmares. 28. What may Dr. Breus agree with about nightmares? A. They happen for certain purposes. B. They are similar to daydreams. C. They possibly help predict future events. D. They come true once in a while. 29. Who does Dr. Krakow think tends to suffer nightmares? A. John who often stays up late. B. Peter who has had terrible experiences. C. Jack who is sensitive to alcohol. D. Paul who sleeps soundly at night. 30. How does the traditional belief explain nightmares? A. They are often caused by irregular bedtimes. B. They are based on disturbing life experiences. C. They are the consequence of negative feelings. D. They are related to what is taken before bedtime. 31. From which section of a website is the text probably taken? A. Mental health. B. Life experiences. C. Eating habits. D. Popular culture. D Microplastics have become a common source of pollution across the Earth — they have settled in the deep sea and on the Himalayas, stuck inside volcanic rocks, filled the stomachs of seabirds and even fallen in fresh Antarctic snow. They are even appearing inside humans. Now, new research suggests that a simple, cheap measure may significantly reduce the level of microplastics in water from your tap (水龙头): boiling and filtering (过滤) it. In a study published Wednesday in Environmental Science & Technology Letters, researchers from China found that boiling tap water for just five minutes — then filtering it after it cools — could remove at least 80 percent of its microplastics. Crucially, this process relies on the water containing enough calcium carbonate (碳酸钙) to trap the plastics. In the study, boiling hard water containing 300 milligrams of calcium carbonate led to an almost 90 percent drop in plastics. But in samples with less than 60 milligrams of calcium carbonate, boiling reduced the level of plastics by just 25 percent. Additionally, the research didn’t include all types of plastics. The team focused only on three common types — polystyrene, polyethylene and polypropylene — and they didn’t study other chemicals previously found in water such as vinyl chloride. Still, the findings show a potential path forward for reducing microplastic exposure — a task that’s becoming increasingly difficult. Even bottled water, scientists found earlier this year, contains 10 to 1,000 times more microplastics than originally thought. Scientists are still trying to determine how harmful microplastics are — but what they do know has raised concerns. The new study suggests boiling tap water could be a tool to limit intake. “The way they demonstrated how microplastics were trapped through the boiling process was nice,” Caroline Gauchotte-Lindsay, an environmental engineer of the University of Glasgow in Scotland who was not involved in the research, tells New Scientist. “We should be looking into upgrading drinking water treatment plants so they remove microplastics.” 32. How does the author present the issue in the first paragraph? A. By quoting an expert. B. By defining a concept. C. By giving examples. D. By providing statistics. 33 What determines the effectiveness of trapping microplastics in water? A. The hardness of water. B. The length of cooling time. C. The frequency of filtering. D. The type of plastic in water. 34. What does the author try to illustrate by mentioning bottled water in paragraph 4? A. The importance of plastic recycling. B. The severity of the microplastic problem. C. The danger in overusing pure water. D. The difficulty in treating polluted water. 35. What is Gauchotte-Lindsay’s suggestion about? A. Choice of new research methods. B. Possible direction for further study. C. Need to involve more researchers. D. Potential application of the findings. Not all great writers are great spellers. It was going to be the best party of the year, perhaps the best party of her life. But her mom had said no. Suzi was desperate and protested, “But everyone is going.” “I don’t care who’s going,” replied her mother. “Even if the Queen of England were going, you are still not going.” Suzi was disappointed and even heartbroken. Sunday dinner came around and Suzi's grandmother joined the family for the meal, as she nearly always did on Sunday. Gran noticed how unhappy Suzi had been looking during the meal but didn’t say a thing. It was Suzi's turn to wash up and Gran said, “Let me help you,” while the rest of the family shifted into the living room to watch a video. In the kitchen, Gran knew what had happened and said, “If you were her, what would your objections be?” Suzi hadn’t stopped to think about her mom’s side. After learning that some adults were going to be there, Gran said to Suzi, “Your mother is concerned and doesn’t want anything to happen to you?” “Nothing will happen,” objected Suzi. “Maybe you’re right,” said Gran, “but maybe Mom’s worried in case it could. You know, when your mother was your age, we used to negotiate about something. If she was going out somewhere, I would ask what time she wanted me to pick her up. She would always add an hour or two to it, saying maybe eleven or twelve o’clock, thinking I wouldn’t know what she was doing. I’d tell her that was far too late and that I wanted her home by nine. She’d object and we’d both come to a compromise (折中) at ten or ten-thirty, which was around what both of us had been thinking all along.” “That way, neither of us was the winner or loser; that way, she got to have time out as she wanted and I got to see her home at a reasonable time. 根据文章第二段“We offer the newest bicycles in a wide variety, including basic bikes with foot brake (刹车), bikes with hand brake and gears (排挡), bikes with child seats, and children’s bikes. 根据文章最后一段“The tour departs from Dam Square every hour on the hour, starting at 1:00 pm every day. (旅游团每小时从大坝广场出发,每天下午1点开始)”可知,导游城市之旅从大坝广场开始。故选D。 【点睛】 B “Everything happens for the best,” my mother said whenever I faced disappointment. “If you can carry on, one day something good will happen. A. the frustration of the author prevented him from performing well at WOC Radio B. both of the author’s parents showed support when he was trying to search for a job C. B 25. C 26. D 27. 根据第四段中的“My disappointment must have shown. “Everything happens for the best,” Mom reminded me. Dad offered me the car to hunt for jobs.(我的失望一定表现出来了。“一切都会好起来的,”妈妈提醒我。爸爸给了我车去寻找工作。)”可知,作者的父母在他找工作时都给予了支持。故选B项。 【25题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“In one studio, a kind lady told me that in most cases big stations couldn’t risk hiring an inexperienced person.(在一个演播室里,一位好心的女士告诉我,在大多数情况下,大电台不会冒险雇佣没有经验的人。)” 根据第五段中的“The preceding autumn, my team had won a game in the last 20 seconds with a 65-yard run. I did a 15-minute boost to that play, and Peter told me I would be broadcasting Saturday’s game!(前一年秋天,我的球队在最后20秒以65码的跑动赢得了一场比赛。 故选A项。 C Do you have frightening dreams while sleeping? One study found the most common nightmare was falling followed by dreams of being chased, feeling lost, and feeling trapped. C 29. B 30. D 31. 根据第二段“There is no exact explanation for nightmares, but Breus says it’s possible that they help the brain practise, prepare for and even predict difficult or dangerous experiences in waking life.(关于噩梦,目前还没有确切的解释,但布鲁斯说,噩梦可能有助于大脑练习、准备,甚至预测醒着的生活中困难或危险的经历)”可知,布鲁斯博士认同噩梦可能有助于预测未来的事件。 根据倒数第二段“He thinks people who’ve been traumatized (使受精神创伤) are certainly at a higher risk of nightmares Examples are offered of those who have suffered criminal attacks, or who have been in life-threatening accidents.(他认为,受到精神创伤的人做噩梦的风险肯定更高,比如那些遭受过犯罪袭击的人,或者遭遇过危及生命的事故的人)”可推知,Krakow会认为有过可怕经历的彼得更容易做噩梦。 根据倒数第二段“One study from 2015 did find a link between eating dairy or hot foods before bedtime and having disturbing dreams, but the study authors noted that this couldn’t be proven definitely because the data was self-reported and there were a lot of other factors to consider.(2015年的一项研究确实发现了睡前吃乳制品或热食物与做噩梦之间的联系,但研究作者指出,这并不能得到肯定的证明,因为数据是自我报告的,还有很多其他因素需要考虑)”可知,传统观念认为噩梦与睡前吃的东西有关。 根据第一段“Do you have frightening dreams while sleeping? According to an email interview by clinical psychologist and sleep expert Dr. Michael Breus, roughly 5 percent of the general population has at least one bad dream per week. Nightmares typically happen during REM sleep, during the middle and later parts of the night.(你睡觉时会做可怕的梦吗?根据临床心理学家和睡眠专家Michael Breus博士的电子邮件采访,大约5%的人每周至少做一次噩梦。噩梦通常发生在快速眼动睡眠期间,在夜间的中段和后期)”结合文章主要说明了科学家对于做噩梦原因的分析以及一些导致做噩梦的因素。可推知,文章选自网站的“心理健康”部分。故选A。 D Microplastics have become a common source of pollution across the Earth — they have settled in the deep sea and on the Himalayas, stuck inside volcanic rocks, filled the stomachs of seabirds and even fallen in fresh Antarctic snow. 33. What determines the effectiveness of trapping microplastics in water? C 33. A 34. B 35. 根据文章第一段中“Microplastics have become a common source of pollution across the Earth — they have settled in the deep sea and on the Himalayas, stuck inside volcanic rocks, filled the stomachs of seabirds and even fallen in fresh Antarctic snow. They are even appearing inside humans. (微塑料已经成为地球上常见的污染源——它们出现在在深海和喜马拉雅山上,被困在火山岩中,填满海鸟的胃,甚至落在南极的新雪中。它们甚至出现了在人类体内)”可推知,作者通过举例提出微塑料污染的问题。故选C。 【33题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第三段中“Crucially, this process relies on the water containing enough calcium carbonate (碳酸钙) to trap the plastics. In the study, boiling hard water containing 300 milligrams of calcium carbonate led to an almost 90 percent drop in plastics. Even bottled water, scientists found earlier this year, contains 10 to 1,000 times more microplastics than originally thought. (尽管如此,研究结果显示了减少微塑料接触的潜在途径——这一任务正变得越来越困难。今年早些时候,科学家们发现,即使是瓶装水,其微塑料含量也比原先想象的高出10到1000倍。)”可推断,作者提到瓶装水是为了说明微塑料污染的严重性。故选B。 【35题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章最后一段中““The way they demonstrated how microplastics were trapped through the boiling process was nice,” Caroline Gauchotte-Lindsay, an environmental engineer of the University of Glasgow in Scotland who was not involved in the research, tells New Scientist. “We should be looking into upgrading drinking water treatment plants so they remove microplastics.” Not all great writers are great spellers. If you want to be published, it's vital to submit a perfect, professionally presented manuscript (原稿). ____36____ No editor is likely to tolerate a writer who does not take the trouble to spell words correctly. I keep two reference books close-by on my desk: dictionary and thesaurus I don't trust my laptop's spellchecker. ____37____ Of course, these days there are plenty of online dictionaries and thesauruses, but I'm old-fashioned enough to prefer a hard cover and pages I can leaf through with my fingers. I use the Concise Oxford Dictionary and the Collins Thesaurus. ____38____ It should give you a precise definition of each word, thus differentiating it from other words whose meanings are similar, but not identical. It will also usually show how the word is pronounced. In addition, I have an old two-volume copy of the Shorter Oxford Dictionary, picked up a few years ago in a bookshop sale for just 99 pence. Of course, with its 2,672 pages, it's not exactly short. It contains around 163,000 words, plus word combinations and idiomatic phrases. ____39____ However, if I need to check the origin of a word or to look up examples of its usage, there's nothing better. For well over a hundred years the most influential English dictionary was Samuel Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language published in 1755. "To make dictionaries is dull (乏味) work," wrote Johnson, illustrating one definition of "dull". ____40____ A few minutes spent casting your eye over a page or two can be a rewarding experience. A. By finding a compromise, we both got something, though maybe not completely, of what we wanted.” After hearing Gran’s story, Suzi felt lost in thought. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ With Gran’s encouragement, Suzi quietly went to her mom’s room and knocked softly. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】After hearing Gran’s story, Suzi felt lost in thought. She began to understand that her mom’s concern wasn’t just about fun, but about her safety and responsibility. Gran had helped her realize that sometimes the best solutions come from seeing things from both sides. Suzi didn’t want her mom to feel like she needed to constantly monitor her, but she also wanted to show that she could be responsible. Gran, noticing her deep reflection, suggested, “Why don’t you talk to your mom? Maybe she’ll listen.” With Gran’s encouragement, Suzi quietly went to her mom’s room and knocked softly. Her mom looked up, surprised, but smiled when she saw Suzi. “Mom, I really want to go to the party, but I understand you’re worried,” Suzi said. Her mom sighed, her expression softening. “I just want you to be safe,” she replied. They talked about their concerns and reached an agreement: Suzi could go, but she’d check in regularly. As Suzi left her mom’s room, a warm feeling filled her. She knew their bond was stronger than before. 词汇激活 行为类 ①理解:understand/comprehend ②帮助:help/assist ③意识到:realize/be aware of ④想要做某事:want to do sth/would like to do sth 情绪类 ①感到惊讶的:surprised/astonished ②担心的:worried/concerned 【点睛】[高分句型1] Suzi didn’t want her mom to feel like she needed to constantly monitor her, but she also wanted to show that she could be responsible.(运用了that引导宾语从句) [高分句型2] Her mom looked up, surprised, but smiled when she saw Suzi.(运用了when引导时间状语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
