For the past week, Ken and I have been visiting local parks and school grounds. As his father, I’ve watched Ken walking in the area with his bucket and gloves, picking up whatever litter (垃圾) caught his eye, rain or shine.
This all started after we visited a beach. Ken said he felt bad for Earth. The next day, he woke up and asked to go back to the beach. What surprised me was that Ken said he wanted to clean it. The beach was a little far, so we made a decision to go to a park instead. That day, Ken also cleaned the streets on the way to and from the park.
When I asked Ken, “What do you want to do tomorrow?” he replied, “Can we go to a different park?” I agreed and said, “Well, we could clean the schools,” and that’s what we did. He was really fond of this cleaning task and I’m not going to discourage him.
In just one week, Ken has cleaned every park, school and public space we could get to in our community. Even when we went for a simple afternoon walk, Ken walked along with his bucket, cleaning the streets as we went. It seems that cleaning has become second nature to him and litter is the reason.
When he said he wanted to do this every day over the summer we didn’t realize how serious he was. But he’s kept doing it, and my wife and I are really proud of him even though he’s just doing something as simple as picking up litter. It amazes me that at 6-and-a-half years old, he made the decision to do something, all on his own.
31. Why did Ken decide to pick up litter?
A. To pass the time. B. To protect the environment.
C. To finish his school task. D. To make his parents happy.
32. What did the father do when he saw Ken’s action?
A. He supported Ken. B. He advised Ken to give up.
C. He discouraged Ken. D. He stopped Ken from doing it.
33. What does the underlined sentence mean in paragraph 4?
A. Ken got into the habit of picking up litter. B. Ken got the chance to stay closer to nature.
C. Ken spent all his free time picking up litter. D. Ken became tired of doing the cleaning task.
34. Why were Ken’s parents proud of their son?
A. He did the cleaning very well. B. He made a decision and kept doing it.
C. He learned to be serious about cleaning. D. He realized the importance of the environment.

Cantonese Opera is one of the most important Chinese opera forms. It is a traditional Chinese art form.
Cantonese Opera was first called Nanxi in the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, and was popular in Guangdong and Guangxi at that time. The first performance language was Theatre Mandarin (普通话). Later, at the end of the Qing Dynasty, Theatre Mandarin was changed to Cantonese so that it could be easy for people to understand.
Since 1949, the Chinese government has paid great attention to art. As a result, it made Cantonese Opera thrive. Many new and excellent operas came out and people liked them very much. In addition, many young people learnt to perform Cantonese Opera.
Cantonese Opera is different from Beijing Opera. Beijing Opera has four roles: Sheng, Dan, Jing and Chou. However, Cantonese Opera has ten roles: Mo, Sheng, Dan, Jing, Chou, Wai, Xiao, Fu, Tie and Za. To perform these roles well, performers have to receive training and learn many skills.
Different roles wear different costumes (服装). In the beginning, Cantonese Opera costumes showed the clothing style of the Ming Dynasty. Later, as Beijing Opera became increasingly popular, it was strongly influenced by Beijing Opera costumes. Costumes were made of cloth and later some other things were added. Today embroidered costumes are the most popular.
Today, Cantonese Opera is not only very popular in Guangdong, Guangxi, Hong Kong and Macao, but also performed in other countries where Cantonese people live. If you want to enjoy Cantonese Opera, Guangdong Cantonese Opera Theatre will be a good place.

We humans can express emotions (情感) by telling others how we feel. But what about animals? How can we tell whether they experience emotions and, if they do, which ones? Over the past 20 years, researchers have made great progress in this field.
It’s very hard for us to know emotions in animals, because they cannot tell us how they feel. However, when emotional things happen, they cause changes in many different ways.
The most common reaction of an animal to an event is how it changes its behaviour. Humans often change facial expressions and gestures depending on whether we experience a pleasant event or not. Animals show different facial expressions as well. For example, changes in the ear position or the amount of the white of the eyes can show different levels of pain or fear in animals. It is important to remember that the facial expressions of animals usually look different than those of humans—joy might not be shown by a smile, while sadness may not be together with tears.
Another example of animal behaviour that is linked to emotions is vocalizations (发声), which can show stress in many animals. We know this is true for humans, too. Imagine you are singing a song in front of many people, your voice might get shaky if you are nervous. Researchers have found that the vocalizations of pigs, goats and cows also change and get less pleasant when these animals are under stress, for example, when they are isolated from the group.
It seems that animals react to their environments much as humans do. So, we can infer that animals can feel emotions. This might encourage us to rethink the environments in which we keep the animals that are under our care—on farms, in zoos or in our houses. If we can better understand how animals react to their environments, we can improve these environments as well as human-animal relationships.
42. According to paragraph 3, people can learn how animals feel ________.
A. through their voices B. through their expressions
C. through their environment D. through their sign language
43. The underlined phrase “isolated from” is similar to “________” in meaning.
A. cared for by B. attracted by C. far away from D. included in
44. What can we know according to the research?
A. Animal emotions are not as rich as human ones.
B. Changes in animals’ expressions are hard to find.
C. Sounds made by animals are a way of expressing feelings.
D. The living environment of animals has little effect on them.
45. Which of the following is the best title of this passage?
A. Do Animals Feel as We Do?
B. Are Animals Our Best Friends?
C. Do Animals Understand the Environment?
D. How Can We Improve Human-animal Relationships?

(A)
For the past week, Ken and I have been visiting local parks and school grounds.
When he said he wanted to do this every day over the summer, we didn’t realize how serious he was.
