When I was ten years old, I found my sister was different. She had autism (自闭症). She could not look people in the eye. She would often say to herself and say her words again very quietly. Although we went to the same primary school, I never, or hardly ever said in front of others that she was my sister.
Just two years ago, my sister and her classmates had to prepare for a show. She had to perform by herself because no one wanted to perform with her. “I’ll sing,” she told my parents and me. I couldn’t believe my ears! How could she sing in front of others? She couldn’t even look people in the eye.
The big day finally arrived. It took her about a minute to tell her name and class to people. I could see someone laughing at her.
“Why is she taking so long?” some people around me asked. How I wished I had been somewhere else! Finally, my sister started to sing. She opened her mouth, and I was really moved. She sang so beautifully. The hall became quiet. There was only her great singing.
I listened carefully to the song. I was ashamed (羞愧的) of myself. Although I hardly took her seriously, she didn’t say anything. She never took anything that I did to heart. It was then that I decided to make a change.
