Journey to the West is a famous Chinese novel. The numbers in it are not just simple numbers, but carry rich cultural information and special meanings. Now, let’s have a look at some of the numbers and their meanings.
13,500
Do you remember what this number stands for in Journey to the West? Yes. Sun Wukong’s magic stick, also called Ruyi Jingu Bang, weighs 13,500 jin. But it’s interesting that this number is the same as the number of breaths a person takes in a day and night, which is written in an old book called Huangdi Nei Jing. This shows that the stick is as important to Sun Wukong as breathing is to a person.
81
Tang Sanzang and his followers go through eighty-one difficult adventures. In Chinese culture, the number nine is very important. It is the biggest single number and means something is complete. Eighty-one is nine times nine, so it means they go through a lot of hard times to achieve something great.
108,000
The total distance they travel to get the sacred texts is 108,000 li (a unit of distance). The number 108 is special in Buddhism (佛教). It is a lucky number that means everything is perfect. For example, Buddhists often use prayer beads (念珠) with 108 beads to help them get rid of (摆脱) bad thoughts.
So, in the book Journey to the West these numbers are not just for counting. They help us understand the story better and show us how special and meaningful the journey is. They make the novel more fascinating and are also an important part of Chinese traditional culture.

Mr Wu is interviewing some Grade Nine students for a class project called Animal World.
Mr Wu: Some animals like living in groups, others don’t. Which is better, and which type would you be?
Simon: I’d be a zebra! Group living means better protection against enemies.
Mr Wu: And why a zebra?
Simon: If enemies went for me, my buddies would circle around me and drive them away. Plus, I look smart in stripes! Oh, did I mention zebras travel in huge numbers? I won’t get lonely any more.
Rhona: Well, I’d be in an elephant community. Making friends is much easier and females help to look after each other’s babies. Scientists also discover animals that live in groups have longer lives than others.
Mr Wu: Would you be an elephant or a zebra, Amy?
Amy: I might be an insect, instead. One of the worker bees that care for the young. I also love how the bees huddle (依偎) together to stay warm over winter.
Rusty: Well, I’m not a team player. The other kids at the football field called me a hog today.
Mr Wu: Adult male pigs do keep to themselves.
Rusty: They meant I was a ball hog. But if I pass the ball, how can I score all the goals?
Charlie: You know, I’d rather go alone.
Simon: Really, Charlie——with no friends to protect you?
Charlie: Skunks (臭鼬) don’t need groups to protect them. They shoot their stink spray (臭液)—that could be fun. And a big group might attract enemies. It’s easier to stay hidden if there’s only one of you. And animal groups seem fine if you’re a leader but less cool if you’re just a member.
Mr Wu: There are often fights for higher levels in the group.
Charlie: And fights for partners or food, too. I’m not competitive—and I’d hate getting hurt. And you’re more likely to get ill in a group—disease could spread fast, too.
Simon: So, which is better?
Mr Wu: It depends on the environment and animal. Either being alone or being in a group can help you survive.
Are animals better to live alone or in 26 ?

In late April 2025, a powerful windstorm swept through the north part of China, with wind speeds reaching 37 to 41 m/s, making it one of the strongest storms since 1986. The event lasted about 18 hours—far longer than typical storms—causing serious damage across many areas.
The storm was formed when extremely cold air from the north met warm air over Mongolia. This big temperature difference mixed with strong winds blowing high in the sky, created perfect conditions for dangerous weather. Nearby mountains squeezed (挤压) the winds like a funnel (漏斗), making them faster and stronger. And Beijing’s forest of tall buildings acted like wind tunnels (风洞) made the winds even more intense (更强烈). For example, the downtown area saw wind speeds hit 133 km/h (37m/s), almost 30% stronger than the 101 km/h (28 m/s) measured in nearby countryside areas.
The storm caused a lot of damages: Power lines were damaged, leaving 3, 000 households without electricity. Flights at Beijing’s main airport were canceled. Sandstorms in Inner Mongolia reduced visibility to near-zero levels.
Weather scientists warned that climate change may cause more storms like this. They suggested building stronger houses and power lines, planting more city trees and improving storm warning systems. For safety, people should keep emergency supplies ready before storms come. They should also stay away from high places in strong winds. More importantly, everyone should listen to weather reports to learn the latest news about the storm.
A Strong Windstorm 36 Northern China
Event Details
The 2025 storm was one of the strongest since 1986 because of its extreme wind speeds and its pretty 37 lasting time.
38
·This big temperature difference between the cold air in north and the pretty warm air over Mongolia formed the storm.
·Valleys between mountains and the tall buildings in cities also caused faster and stronger winds.
Damages
·Damaged power lines left thousands of homes 39 electricity.
·All flights at Beijing’s airport stopped.
·It is difficult to see in Inner Mongolia because of the storm.
Suggestions
For cities:
·Build stronger houses and power lines.
·Plant more trees.
·Improve weather warning systems.
For common people:
·Keep daily things ready.
· 40 high places during strong winds.
·Pay attention to weather reports.

Music is a big part of our lives. But some US schools have cut out music classes in recent years.
In fact, this is not just a problem in the US. In other countries, music classes are not thought to be as important as other subjects like math and history. That’s because music is not seen as a very important life skill, and it isn’t tested. Many students are busy with schoolwork, so parents and students choose to pay attention to the subjects that are tested more often.
However, music education is very important for all students. Music helps with math and science. Students learn to count and how to divide. Students also use science to help themselves discover what sounds good together and what doesn’t. Students can learn a lot about languages through music. Many songs are written in other languages. Students must learn to translate these works to understand what they are singing about. Students can also learn about art. Some famous pieces are written about important pieces of art, and students learn about the artists as they’re playing the music.
Music education brings higher thinking to our children. It allows them to think about complex (复杂的) patterns. Students have to sense what every other musician does at every time.
Students also learn plenty of cooperation (协作) of body parts through music. It is not as simple as it looks. For example, when playing the piano, people see music notes and decode (解码) them in their brains. They also use their fingers to make sounds.

Chopsticks are a pair of sticks to be used when eating. They were first used in China and then introduced to other areas in the world. Chopsticks are considered one of the symbols of Chinese food culture. Here are some facts about them.
Chinese people started to use chopsticks about 3, 000 years ago during the Shang Dynasty. During the pre-Qin period, chopsticks were called “Jia”, and in the Qin and Han dynasties, they were called “Zhu”. “Zhu” sounds like “stop” in Chinese, which is an unlucky word. So people in the Ming Dynasty began to call them “Kuai”, as it means “fast” in Chinese. This is the origin of today’s name of Chinese chopsticks.
There is no exact historical record about who invented chopsticks, but there are many folk stories about it. One theory is that Jiang Ziya was inspired to create chopsticks by a mythical bird. It is also said that Yu the Great, who founded the Xia Dynasty, used sticks to pick up hot food in order to save time to control floods, so chopsticks came into being.
What should we pay attention to when using chopsticks? When eating with the elders, Chinese people usually let the elders take up chopsticks first. Besides, playing with chopsticks is thought to be a bad manner. It’ s also a bad one to hit the bowl with chopsticks, because in ancient China beggars often did it to attract attention.
These small chopsticks reflect the development and changes of Chinese language culture and table manners culture. And they also carry rich historical and cultural connotations.

(2025·四川成都·模拟预测)Bamboo has been used in China for thousands of years. It can be made into many useful items like chopsticks, paper, musical instruments and even clothing. And you will never imagine that, as a key material, bamboo is becoming a tool for protecting the environment.
Every year, the world produces more than 400 million tons of plastic products, which end up as waste. Bamboo is a great replacement (替代品) because it can live for 60 years on average and grows quite quickly. That allows it to be harvested (收割) many times in a year. It’s strong and flexible (灵活的), making it useful in many ways. Most importantly, it is far more eco-friendly than plastic, as it can break down in about three months, while plastic takes hundreds of years. As the world’s largest producer of bamboo products, China started a three-year plan in 2023 to promote (推广) bamboo as a key material in production.
Anji, a city in northwestern Zhejiang, is leading the way. With 666 square kilometers of bamboo forests, Anji has been using bamboo in creative ways since 2022. There are bamboo products everywhere in Anji. For example, instead of traditional plastic bags, they use bags made from only 40% plastic. Bamboo powder (粉末) makes the rest material. Those bags are even stronger than traditional plastic ones!
However, using bamboo completely faces challenges. The prices of producing bamboo products are often higher than those of producing plastic ones. To help with that, the Chinese government provides money support. Anji is also trying to find new ways out. In the future, bamboo is expected to replace not just plastic, but also wood, steel, and maybe even some kinds of food. All in all, the future of bamboo is bright.
