Everybody hates rats (big mice). But in the earthquake (地 震) capitals of the world—Japan, Los Angeles and Turkey, rats will soon be man’s best friends.
What happens after an earthquake? We send in rescue (救援) dogs. Why? Because they can smell (闻) people. Dogs save lives. They help rescuers to find living people. But dogs are big and they can’t get into small spaces. So now a new research project is using a smaller animal to save lives: the rat.
How does it work? First, the rat is trained to smell people. When this happens, the rat’s brain gives a signal (信号). This is sent to a small radio on its back, and then the rescuers follow the radio signal. When the rat’s brain activity jumps, the rescuers know that someone is alive. The rat has smelled that person.
Although there are already robots which can do this job, rats are superior. Christian Linster at Cornell University, New York, says, “Robots’ noses don’t work well when there are other smells (气味) around. Rats are good at that.” Rats can also see in the dark. They are cheaper and quicker to train than dogs, and unlike (不像) robots, they don’t need electricity (电)!
The “rat project” is not finished, but Julie Ryan of the International Rescue Organization in Scotland says, “It would be wonderful. A rat can get into spaces we can’t get to, and a rat will get out if it isn’t safe.” Perhaps for the first time in history, people will be happy to see a rat in a building, but only after an earthquake, of course. We are looking forward to the day’s coming.
5. In the earthquake capitals, rats will become man’s best friends because they can________.
A. get into big spaces B. follow the radio signal C. send messages to people
6. The rescuers can judge (判断) a person who is alive by (通过) ________.
A. the signal sent by the radio on the rat’s back B. the smell given off by the person around C. the noise made by the rat
7. The underlined word “superior” in Paragraph 4 means ________.
A. shorter B. better C. smaller
8. The best title of this passage is ________.
A. Rat Robots Without Electricity B. The “Rescue Rats” Project C. The Earthquake Signal

Should we teenagers help our parents do chores? Is it important for us to learn how to do chores? I think so. Most of teenagers like us are the only child in each family. So our parents love us very much. They do everything well for us and don’t want us to do any chores. I think it’s bad for us. The following is a real story.
I have a classmate called Li Ting. She is the only child in her family like me. Her parents love her so much that they don’t let her do any chores. Her mother had to take care of her father in the hospital and couldn’t cook the dishes for Li Ting for a week. Li Ting didn’t know how to cook meals. So she only had instant noodles (方便面) for meals. From the story we know that it’s very important for us to learn to do chores and other skills besides (除……之外) studying.

① Teens are gaining (增加) weight. Today most teenagers are at least one size larger than teens were 20 years ago. Even clothing sizes have changed. Did you know that a small today used to be a medium 20 years ago?
② A recent research shows 97% of teens need more exercise. It’s bad news because too little exercise means you are missing a lot of good things in life. Exercise helps in two ways.
③ First, exercise helps your body. Physical activity can make your body strong. It can also keep you at a healthy weight. Doctors say that people who stay at a healthy weight have fewer health problems.
④ Second, exercise can help your mind. People who get plenty of physical activity might worry less and sleep better at night. You may even learn better in school. Students who are healthy can listen and understand better in class.
⑤ You can change your life and be more active at any point. It’s never too late. An article called “How to Limit Screen Time and Get Moving” gives these ideas:
⑥ Step away from the screen. You should have no more than two hours of screen time a day. You will enjoy life more if you leave it instead of watching it!
⑦ Make fitness fun. Find a sport you like. It doesn’t need to be the traditional sports of basketball, soccer, or baseball. Those are all great sports and if you like them, play them. However, you can also try hiking, skateboarding and so on. If you enjoy the sport, you will do it.
⑧ Exercise with others. Find a friend or family member to exercise or play with you. You will have more fun and it helps keep you responsible for going.

My Experience of Doing Housework
As a family member, I think it’s our duty to help our parents do housework. I often help my parents do some housework, such as taking out the rubbish, doing the dishes after the meals and watering the flowers.
Last Sunday, when my parents went out shopping to buy food for lunch, I began to clean my house. First, I swept the floor and wiped the table. Then, I collected all the books and other things and put them away. Finally, I took out all the rubbish. When my parents came back, they were surprised and praised me. I felt so happy.
To tell the truth, doing housework makes me tired. But doing housework can not only develop our independence but also show love to our parents. So I advise all of us to take action from now on.
