Have you ever tried gathering together with some friends and take a walk through the streets aimlessly (无目的地)? This is what many young people in China recently enjoy doing when they visit a new city, which is called “citywalk”. Citywalk means “hanging around the city” on foot.
Citywalk offers people a way to interact with a city. They can explore old buildings or boutique shops in the city or enjoy a cup of coffee or some local snacks on the street. It also gives them a chance to meet new people. It can be a guided trip for a small group of people or simply a relaxing walk for one or two. They follow one rule: avoid famous scenic spots and big crowds.

The Tang Dynasty was a golden age of Chinese culture, and its art was famous for its colorful and creative styles. What do you think of when you think about Tang Dynasty art? One feature about China, paintings and clothing from that time was that they used a lot of different colors.
This was also true for women’s faces. The ladies back then were given much freedom to express their beauty. They used makeup (化妆品) with brighter colors than before. They put makeup mainly on their faces, forehead, eyebrows and cheeks to look more beautiful.
“Women’s facial makeup in the Tang Dynasty was different from today. They put yellow powder on their foreheads. It was called the ‘yellow forehead’”, explains Sun Ji of the Museum of Chinese History. Just like the “yellow forehead”, the “green eyebrows” was also a makeup word. __▲__They dyed their eyebrows green to make themselves look nice. Later, the green color got darker and turned black.
Besides the yellow forehead and green eyebrows, they also stuck a flower-like thing between their eyebrows. The shapes were different. The simplest one was a round dot (小点). A fancier one could look like a pair of wings.
Nowadays, most of us may not think the Tang Dynasty makeup is very beautiful. “Aesthetics change,” Sun says. “For example, in the early Tang Dynasty, women thought wide eyebrows were pretty. They also put two dots at the corners of their mouths. They were usually light in color.”
One thing remains unchanged, though: People always like to look for beauty. The most important thing is that people from different times love beauty. You may have a house robot that can do housework for you. But is it so smart? See Aurora, a headless dog-sized robot used to keep birds and other animals away at an Alaskan airport. Watch another 1.8 meter-tall legless robot called EveR6, moving its arms to guide musicians through a performance.
Those robots above require artificial intelligence (AI). AI is a computer system (系统) that can understand languages, make decisions and solve problems. AI can be taught skills. In cities, AI is used to watch out for cars that make black smoke. It works together with the police to stop them and keep the air clean. AI can help us fight climate (气候) change by finding clever ways to cut down the energy use.
Some people worry that AI will take away a lot of jobs and also fear that AI could develop out of control and bring danger to humans. A blind box keeps what’s inside a secret. Usually, there are toys in blind boxes, but now stores are putting food in them. They are “leftover (剩菜) blind boxes”. Many people in China have fallen in love with it. In each box is the food nearly out of the best-before date.
“We pack products such as milk, bread, cake, and sandwiches in blind boxes, and sell these boxes at half price. We usually start to sell blind boxes at 7 pm every day,” Wu Tian who owns a convenience store in Beijing said. Some WeChat mini programs also help sell the food. People often check and buy leftover blind boxes on them. It’s reported that one-third of the world’s food is wasted every year, reaching around 1.3 billion tons in 2023. A person may waste about 93 grams of food each meal. The leftover blind boxes may help with this.
According to a mini program online, more than 27,000 pieces of bread were sold within a month, or else the food would be thrown away.
“Leftover blind boxes, as a new way of business, have a bright future. More and more people like the leftover blind boxes because they help reduce food waste and save money,” said Hong Yong, an expert on business. “Therefore, they are popular with customers.” Although the idea of leftover blind boxes is creative, more rules need to be set to make it more successful.

Dear Simon,
I’m very happy to hear from you. Here I want to share some of my thoughts about food.
I really like dumplings. They are not only delicious but also a symbol of family reunion in China. I love their taste and the warm feeling when the whole family makes dumplings together.
In my hometown, mapo tofu is a very special local food. It’s made of soft tofu, minced meat, and lots of spices. It’s popular because of its spicy and numbing flavor. The soft texture of the tofu and the rich taste make it a favorite among many people.
Food is extremely important in China. It’s not just about filling our stomachs. It’s a big part of our culture. For example, during festivals, we have special foods that carry good wishes. Also, sharing food is a way to show love and hospitality. People often get together to enjoy a meal, which helps strengthen relationships.

Yours,
Li Ming
