Long ago, in ancient China, there was a story about the invention of silk. People believed that silk was first invented by Leizu, the wife of the Yellow Emperor. Leizu learned how to make cocoons (蚕茧) into soft and strong cloth. This magical cloth became known as “silk”, and it was so valuable that it was called “China’s Gold”. Following kings’ orders, the Chinese kept the secret of making silk for centuries.
But then, something amazing happened! During the Han Dynasty, the brave officer Zhang Qian traveled west as far as Central Asia and brought silk there. As years passed by, silk became so important that the trade road from Europe to China got its name-the Silk Road.
The Silk Road became a busy highway for traders who carried things across deserts and mountains. From China, people sold silk and tea. In return, they received treasures such as spices, gold and silver from the West. At the very beginning, it was mainly about trade; then people began to share ideas, technologies and cultures. For example, Chinese inventions like paper-making were spread to the West, while new ideas about math and science came to China.
Most importantly, the Silk Road helped different cultures learn from each other. Art, music and even language were shared along this ancient road. In places like the Dunhuang Grottoes (敦煌石窟) in China, you can see how art pieces combined (融合) Eastern and Western styles into something distinctive. It can not be seen anywhere else.
The story of the Silk Road tells us how people from faraway lands could become friends through trade and shared ideas. Today, we remember the Silk Road as one of the greatest examples of cooperation and exchange in history. It shows us how important it is to learn about and respect each other’s traditions, and that different cultures can work together to create amazing things.

Scientists have long questioned how far bees travel to collect food. They believe that bees can fly as far as 10 kilometers if necessary, though most of the time, bees don’t go that far.
To find out the answer, some scientists used small codes called “AprilTags” to track bees. These codes are similar to QR codes (二维码). They are easy for cameras to follow, even without enough light, and they don’t hurt the bees.
The scientists put the sensors (传感器) on 600 young bees every two weeks. Over the spring and summer, they followed more than 32, 000 bees in six hives (蜂房). By putting a camera and a small computer on each hive, the scientists could tell when the bees with sensors left and returned.
The scientists found that most bee trips outside the hive took just one to four minutes-probably for quick jobs like checking the weather. Longer trips were usually under 20 minutes. But about one third of the bees took trips over two hours. This might mean the bees were making longer trips to collect food. The scientists also found that it took the bees more time to collect food when there were not enough flowers around.
Bees use special “dances” to communicate with each other about where to collect food. Now the scientists want to know the relationship between their new tracking information and these special “dances”. They plan to teach beekeepers and other scientists how to use this new tracking way.
26. What does the underlined word track probably mean in Chinese?
A. 追踪 B. 喂养 C. 保护 D. 增加
27. How long will the bees take trips if they collect food?

C. All the bees took trips longer than two hours. D. Beekeepers have used this new tracking way.

My name is Jeff. I like learning foreign languages. When I retired (退休) in 2018, I could speak three foreign languages. At that time, my biggest wish was to learn a new one.
Later, I watched a program about Chinese culture on TV. I was so interested in it that I made the decision to learn Chinese. I found a cultural center in the north of London by chance. It offered Chinese language courses fit for me. In March 2019, I began to learn. To attend the classes, I left my home at 5 a.m. every Saturday and drove 3 hours to the cultural center. But this didn’t stop me. After class, I practiced a lot. Through learning, I developed a love for Chinese poems and I joined in activities like Chinese poetry readings. I helped my classmates in many ways like asking the way and shopping in Chinese. This experience encouraged me to study further.
The British often say “Learning is a lifelong pursuit.”, which means “It is never too late to learn”. I will keep on learning Chinese, hoping to be a lifelong learner. I believe that learning Chinese will bring even more possibilities to my life.

Bees use special “dances” to communicate with each other about where to collect food Now the scientists want to know the relationship between their new tracking information and these special “dances”. They plan to teach beekeepers and other scientists how to use this new tracking way.
26. What does the underlined word track probably mean in Chinese?
A. 追踪 B. 喂养 C. 保护 D. 增加
27. How long will the bees take trips if they collect food?
A. One to four minutes. B. Under 20 minutes. C. At least one hour. D. Over two hours.
28. What can we learn from the passage?
A These codes are dangerous to the bees. B. Scientists studied the bees very carefully.
C. All the bees took trips longer than two hours. D. Beekeepers have used this new tracking way.
29. Who might find this passage most helpful?
