Nicholas Sparks is an american storyteller whose books have consistently been turned into major films. Although not all of his books were made into movies, all have been the new york times best sellers. He has sold over one hundred five million copies worldwide, with over seventy five million of them within the united states alone. He lives with his family in north CarOlina. He is also considered to be very generous with his money. In two thousand and eleven, he created the Nicholas Spark's foundation to make more opportunities available to children from poor families. His foundation, which he started with his wife, provides scholarships for children from low income families and rural communities. The reflection in the mirror was fit and strong, with a narrow waist. This month I’ll be celebrating my 74th birthday, but I feel more like I’m about to turn 40. In fact, I’m in the best shape of my life. And I’m here to tell you that it’s never too late to make changes. If I can do it in my early 70s, then you can do it too. I haven’t always felt so body confident. As a busy working mum I had the same hang-ups as so many other women. In my forties I fell into the trap of trying to do it all. I raised my daughter Laura, now 43, while working as a NHS clinical leader, which left me feeling stressed and exhausted. By 50 I’d reached breaking point. I ended up breaking down in the doctor’s surgery. And I was signed off work with stress-related depression. I began to do a lot of soul searching. My burnout had set me on a completely different path. Around this time, my approach to my health was also shifting. So many women hit 50 thinking that’s it and they’re done, but for me it felt like a new beginning. I enrolled in a gym and learned how to use the equipments. Over the next few years, I went to the gym roughly twice a week. Sometimes I didn’t want to go—but at the end of every session I always felt better. I wrote and self-published a book called Journey to Chocolate about my seeking for a more balanced and satisfying life. I started eating “clean” with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, avoiding processed food and not drinking alcohol from Monday to Thursday. The changes to my diet made me feel more energetic and alert. I slept better, and managing my weight was much easier. 24.Why does the author write this article? A.To inspire. B.To inform. C.To discuss. D.To show off. 25.What does the author think of her life as a working mum? A.Annoying. B.Tiring. C.Rewarding. D.Amazing. 26.What is the book Journey to Chocolate mainly about? A.The meaning of life. B.The way to keep clean. C.The author’s pursuit. D.The benefits of chocolate. 27.What can be the best title of this text? A.Keep Energetic at 74 B.Hold on to Your Dream C.Retire as Early as Possible D.Make Use of Old Age C Positive psychology is a relatively new sub- field of psychology that focuses on human strengths and the things that make life worth living — to move beyond surviving to flourishing Theorists and researchers in the field have sought to identify the elements of a good life. They have also proposed and tested practices for improving life satisfaction and well-being. While psychologists have studied topics like happiness, optimism, and other human strengths for decades, positive psychology wasn’t officially identified as a branch of psychology until 1998 when Martin Seligman was elected president of the American Psychological Association (APA). Seligman called for research into what makes normal people’s lives positive and fulfilling. He stated that psychology should be just as concerned with nurturing the good things in life as it was with healing the bad. From these ideas positive psychology was born. Today, positive psychology is sometimes confused with self-help movements. However, positive psychology is a science. Positive psychologists don’t wish to discard the study of human problems. They simply wish to add the study of what’s good in life to the field. Despite its ongoing popularity, positive psychology has been criticized for a number of different reasons. First, humanistic (人本主义的) psychologists have argued that Seligman is claiming credit for the work previously done in humanistic psychology. Also, some have said that the research produced by the sub- field is invalid or overstated. Similarly, some claim that positive psychology fails to take individual differences into account. Instead presenting findings as it they will work for everyone in the same way. Finally, some have suggested that positive psychology is limited by cultural bias (偏见). Positive psychology’s findings often come from a middle-class perspective that ignores issues such as systemic inequality and poverty. Recently, however, attempts have been made to expand the findings in positive psychology to incorporate (合并) perspectives from non-Western countries and a diversity of backgrounds. 28.What can we learn about the Positive psychology from the first paragraph? A.Positive psychology is finding a new way for humans to survive. B.Psychologists have already studied positive psychology for decades. C.It was in 1998 that positive psychology became a branch of psychology. D.Positive psychology focuses on both human strengths and problems. 29.What does the underlined word “discard” in Paragraph 2mean? A.Abandon. B.Explore. C.Divide. D.Evaluate. 30.How is the future development of positive psychology according to the last- paragraph? A.Steady. B.Promising. C.Uncertain. D.Fruitless. 31.Where is the text-probably taken from? A.A guidebook B.A forum C.An advertisement D.A journal D A team of engineers at Harvard University has been inspired by Nature to create the first robotic fly. The mechanical fly has become a platform for a series of new high- tech systems. Designed to do what a fly does naturally, the tiny machine is the size of a fat housefly. Its mini wings allow it to stay in the air and perform controlled flight tasks. “It’s extremely important for us to think about this as a whole system and not just the sum of a bunch of individual components (元件) ,” said Robert Wood, the Harvard engineering professor who has been working on the robotic fly project for over a decade. A few years ago, his team got the go- ahead to start piecing together the components. “The added difficulty with a project like this is that actually none of those components are off the shelf and so we have to develop them all on our own,” he said. They engineered a series of systems to start and drive the robotic fly. “The seemingly simple system which just moves the wings has a number of interdependencies on the individual components, each of which individually has to perform well, but then has to be matched well to everything it’s connected to,” said Wood. The flight device was built into a set of power, computation, sensing and control systems. Wood says the success of the project proves that the flying robot with these tiny components can be built and manufactured. While this first robotic flyer is linked to a small, off- board power source, the goal is eventually to equip it with a built- in power source, so that it might someday perform data- gathering work at rescue sites, in farmers’ fields or on the battlefield. “Basically it should be able to take off, land and fly around,” he said. Wood says the design offers a new way to study flight mechanics and control at insect- scale. Yet, the power, sensing and computation technologies on board could have much broader applications. “You can start thinking about using them to answer open scientific questions, you know, to study biology in ways that would be difficult with the animals, but using these robots instead.” he said. “So there are a lot of technologies and open interesting scientific questions that are really what drives us on a day- to- day basis.” 32.The difficulty the team of engineers met with while making the robotic fly was that ________. A.they had no model in their mind B.they did not have sufficient time C.they had no ready- made components D.they could not assemble the components 33.It can be inferred from paragraphs 3 and 4 that the robotic fly ________. A.consists of a flight device and a control system B.has been put into wide application C.can collect information from many sources D.can just fly in limited areas at the present time 34.Which of the following can be learned from the passage? A.The robotic fly er is designed to learn about insects. B.Animals are not allowed in biological experiments. C.There used to be few ways to study how insects fly. D.Wood’s design can replace animals in some experiments. 35.What is Wood’s attitude towards the study of the robotic flyer? A.Critical B.Anxious C.Positive D.Negative How to Make the World a Better Place When you think about people who have made the world a better place, you probably think of famous scientists or great leaders. 36 Ordinary people like you and me can also help a lot. An act of kindness can bring a smile to a person’s face even if only for a moment. Give away your money. Choose charity that has meaning for you. For example, if you want to help hungry children, you can try to find an international organization that provides food for those in poor areas. 37 Share your knowledge. If a friend needs skills in a certain area, offer your advice. Perhaps she is struggling to set up a computer, and you know how to do that. Offer whatever ability you have, but always remember to be polite. Help a stranger. Your small actions can brighten the day of others. Hold the door for someone whose hands are full. 38 Give your seat on the bus to an old man. The key is expecting nothing in return for your acts of kindness. 39 Show the people close to you how much you care about them. Tell them they mean a lot to you. Make a beautiful gift for a friend. Take your husband to his favourite fun place if he has had a hard week. Tell your children how much they mean to you. Be grateful to others. 40 Thank the waiter. Do you have a very good neighbour who is always there when you need her? Tell her how much you appreciate her being in your life. A.That is not all the truth. B.Care about those you know. C.Help the blind cross the street. D.You should know what love means. E.Every cent you give away will mean a lot. F.Have you had good service in a restaurant? If you see a problem, you can help solve it. The young 43 are willing to 44 this concept because at heart every child wants to grow into a happy, healthy and 45 adult. In fact, it is many young people’s 46 to set up programmes or businesses that improve social conditions. An excellent example is an Ashoka project started in 1995 in Dhaka, which effectively handled the 47 problem the city encountered, and provided an income for local farmers there. When Masqsood and Iftekhar from Ashoka began to study the problem of all the uncollected rubbish that lay in Dhaka’s streets, 48 rats and disease, they discovered that 80% of it was natural waste. So they educated the poor there to 49 methods to compost (堆肥) this waste. They knew that they would have a 50 for the end product because local farmers were struggling with 51 chemical fertilisers (化肥). At first, they were 52 , but once they were able to 53 them that there was money to be made, the project 54 . In 2009 sales were $14,000. Most people take 57 for granted that for those bees dropping is more dangerous than keeping flying. However, it's not true.    One theory could link to how bees use the sun's position to guide their way back, so once the sun sets, they immediately stop moving.   58 theory suggests it is a prey (猎物) response, 59 shade from a large predator (捕食者) above them resulting in bees dropping from the air and falling to the ground, where they would have less chance of being spotted.     Either way, such strange behavior of bees is 60 (fascinate) to look at. Some bees have adapted to flying at night, 61 (possible) as there is less competition from other 62 (insect). However, 63 bees can see in the dark depends on how “night” and “dark” 64 (understand), as some animals can see at night because they have eyes 65 (accustom) to low lighting, while dark can mean a total absence of light. NOTICE ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The Students’ Union A Fresh Start at College After my parents drove off and left me standing at the parking lot with my luggage, I felt very awkward and thought everyone on the new campus was watching me. Finally, I decided to do what I had been doing: Keep my ears open and my mouth shut, and try to appear as mature as I could. However, no matter how hard I tried to be mature, I still felt a little bit embarrassed when I dragged my luggage along the way to my new dorm. Having unpacked my luggage and settled down in my dorm, I spent the rest of the day seeking out each of my classrooms so that I could march in without asking silly questions. The next morning I went to my first class early. Once I was in the room, however, another problem awaited me. Where to sit? After much hesitation, I chose a seat in the first row and to the side. “Welcome to Biology 101,” the professor began. Oh, my God! I had thought it was a literature class. A cold sweat broke out on the back of my neck. I took out of my schedule and checked the room number. I was in the right room but the wrong building. “So now what?” I wondered. “Get up and leave in the middle of the lecture? Would everyone laugh at me?” In the end, I decided to settle into my chair and tried to look as serious as a biology major might be. After class I felt a little bit hungry and hurried to the cafeteria. I filled my plate with sandwiches and was heading for the seat when I accidentally stepped on a rotten banana on the ground. 固定句型take it for granted that...“认为...是理所当然的”。it为形式宾语,真正的宾语是后面的that从句。故填it。 58. one...another...“一个...另外一个...”。故填Another。 59. 故填with。 60. 故填whether。 64. 故填are understood。 65. 66.One possible version: But all the students in the cafeteria came to their feet, cheering and clapping. I felt really ashamed of myself and kept blaming myself why I could not do anything right and appear more mature in public. When I tried to slip out of the cafeteria and decided to live on instant noodles in my dorm until they forgot the accident, I heard a crash beside me. I looked around and saw another poor soul stepped on the same banana. My heart went out to him as people began to cheer and clap as they had done for me.
