Classical Chinese gardens are purposely designed. No matter where you stand, you can never see the whole thing at once. The design and discovery (发现) have helped the classical gardens of China, especially those in Suzhou, remain popular attractions after all these years.
Besides relaxing in nature, the classical Chinese gardens also inspire artistic expression like poetry, literature or painting. Nearly all Chinese gardens feature the things below.
Water
The water in a garden typically symbolizes (以……为象征) a lake or even the ocean. Water stands for communication, movement and dreams.
Rocks
Large rocks typically symbolize mountains. Many of the rocks in the Suzhou gardens come from Lake Tai, having been shaped by the flow of water over thousands of years. Smaller rocks are often on show in the halls at a garden’s entrance.
Plants
Different plants and flowers are used for either symbolic or aesthetic (美学的) purpose—or both. Bamboo, for example, stands for strength. Flowers add color to a garden, with each carrying a special meaning of its own.
Gates Windows
Gates of different shapes divide different parts of a garden. The most common type of gate, the moon gate, is simply a circle. Windows are placed throughout the garden to allow the passage of light. You can also catch a glimpse of interesting trees or rocks on the other side from the window.
Pavilions (亭)
In Chinese gardens pavilions are usually placed in some of the best viewing places. Sometimes a pavilion is placed where one can see the reflection (倒影) of the moon at night, or in the best place to listen to the sound of rain on the leaves above. In the past, pavilions were also used as places for garden owners to reflect, paint and write poems.

Our body language shows lots of information about our ideas and feelings. ____18____ If you know the differences of the body language among cultures you can behave properly when you visit other countries. Here are a couple of examples.
In many countries people usually shake hands or hug (拥抱) each other when they meet for the first time. However, in some European countries, people kiss each other on the cheeks when they first meet. ____19____ Also, people from some places of India would like to greet one another by touching feet instead of shaking hands.
Hand gestures are also a kind of important body language. If you’re in Belgium or Northern Italy, be sure to avoid brushing your hand under your chin (下巴) when speaking. ____20____ And do you think the thumbs-up sign is always a hand gesture of “great”? Well, people in Greece or Sardinia don’t think so. In their cultures, the gesture is as rude as a middle finger sign in the West.
____21____ But in some countries of Eastern Europe, it doesn’t work like that. The two movements there have opposite meanings. And in India, people nod their heads from side to side to tell you that they understand what you say. It’s a way of showing that they are listening to you carefully. This can, of course, make people from other countries confused (困惑的).
All in all, body language is of great importance in communicating with people from other cultures. We’d better take it seriously in daily life.
A. As a result, some visitors to these countries may feel uncomfortable.
B. Usually, nodding means yes and shaking one’s head means no.
C. And in different cultures, the meaning of the body language changes.
D. They think it’s not easy for them to learn body language.
E. It’s a way to tell someone to go away.
阅读D部分的材料,将关于梦想的五个方面(22—26题)与五个主题(A—E选项)进行匹配。

____22____ As teenagers, we all have many dreams. The dreams can be very big, like winning the Nobel Prize, becoming a famous scientist, or changing the world. On the other hand, dreams can also be small but meaningful, like improving our grades, making our parents proud, or being the best in our favorite subject. No matter how big or small, dreams inspire us to work hard and never give up.
____23____ In Follow Your Heart, Australian writer Andrew Matthews teaches us an important lesson: turning dreams into reality is life’s greatest challenge. He encourages us to believe in ourselves, work hard, and never fear failure. Dreams give our life meaning and direction. So, instead of giving up when facing difficulties, we should stay positive and keep moving forward. Remember—every great success begins with a dream and the courage to pursue it!
____24____ Sometimes, negative thoughts can be the biggest wall between you and your dreams. You might think, “I’m not good at math” or “I could never become a writer.” But these kinds of ideas often stop you from getting your dream. The truth is, no one is perfect at first. Instead of letting fear stop you, focus on small steps forward. Believe in yourself, and your dream will become closer than you think!
____25____ Never let go of your dreams. Keep telling yourself of what you want to achieve every day. Break your big dream into small, manageable steps, and celebrate each little success along the way. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day, but every brick mattered. By staying focused, you’ll be amazed at how close you can get to making your dream come true. The key is to never stop believing in yourself!
____26____ The biggest challenge in achieving your dreams isn’t failure or difficulties—it’s yourself! When things get tough, it’s easy to doubt yourself and want to give up. But remember, every successful person faced these same thoughts. The difference is they kept going. When you feel like giving up, that’s exactly when you need to try one more time. Your dream is worth fighting for, so don’t let your own doubts stop you!
A. What should you always tell yourself?
B. What can dreams be?
C. What does the writer tell us about dreams?
D. What is the biggest challenge?
E. What can stop you?

Reading a good book is a wonderful journey because the reader can live in someone else’s world for a while. Reading together with others, known as buddy (同伴) reading, will make this journey even more fantastic. During the journey, the buddies spend time doing a lot of reading activities. This not only adds to the pleasure of reading, but also deepens their understanding of the books.
Although it is all right to have students join in buddy reading with same-aged schoolmates, schools usually pair up older students with younger ones. In 2021, Green School started such a program and has achieved a great success.
Both younger and older readers in this school have learned a lot from this two-year reading program. For example, when they listened to each other, they learned to be kind and patient. This experience also provided them with a chance to practice lifelong skills such as exercising leadership or communicating with others. A student called Jason said that reading to a younger buddy was really helpful. He became more confident, as he knew he was a role model for someone.
The school also became a closer community. The reading buddies felt more connected as they often met each other. The students were always excited when they saw their buddies pass by in the hallway.
Now summer vacation is coming. It’s a great time to get into books. Why not pair up with a friend, choose a book you both like and read it together?
