My name is Joan MacDonald, and I am 75 years old. Five years ago I was overweight. I had to take medicine for high blood pressure and my shoulders really hurt. I often felt so tired that I had difficulty walking up and down stairs. I got emotional (易激动的) easily as well, and I was in great need of a change.
My daughter Michelle came to me and offered me the chance to work out with her that winter. I would be taking part in an online group with other women who were all working to change their habits and take the best possible care of themselves.
With the help of Michelle and the team of women, I learned how to use an iPhone for the first time in my life. It was unbelievably hard work, and there were many days when I was in tears (眼泪) but I never gave up. I renewed my gym membership (健身房会员), created balanced meals, moved around with confidence in the gym and I understood the importance of lifting heavy weights.
I don’t expect my changes to be very quick. I will go at my own speed. I think it’s human nature to wonder if we are on the right way or not, especially on a long trip. With the months flying by, I could see that we were all changing. My confidence in the gym was growing. We were all cheering each other on.
I’m now five years into my journey. I can honestly say that I am a different woman than I was when I started out. I really enjoy meeting other women and men who also want to live a healthier way of life.
If you wish to get your health improved, I can tell you that it is not an easy journey to go on. However, it is well worth it. I hope my story can give you the confidence.

It is reported that in 2023, only 9.02 million babies were born in China. The population growth rate (率) was -1.48‰. China has a huge population, but these years, fewer and fewer babies are born. This makes a lot of people worry. So, what will happen because of this lower birth rate?
First, population aging. People live longer now, and with fewer babies, the number of old people in China is rising fast. This brings big problems. The government has to spend more money on the old people’s health and living. It makes the government feel stressed (压力的). Also, there won’t be enough workers. This is not good for making money in China.
Second, families change. In old-style Chinese families, kids were important. But now, lots of people want fewer kids, and some don’t want any. This can make families more changeable.
Finally, it is bad for our society, such as schools and job market. When there are fewer people, schools don’t have enough students. Companies don’t have enough skilled workers, resulting in fewer good jobs. This can also make our society less stable (稳定的).
Now, the government and all of us should do something. We can help people have more babies, make kids and old people’s lives better, and make it easier to get an education and a job. Only in this way can we make our society keep going well.
29. What happens because of the population aging?
①There’re more old people. ② It’s easier to get good jobs.
③There won’t be enough workers. ④The government pays for the family.
A ①② B. ①③ C. ②④ D. ③④
30. What’s the third paragraph mainly about?
A. The future of Chinese families. B. The change of traditional families.
C. Why kids are important in families. D. The number of families is changing.
31. Why does the writer write this article?
A. To ask people to have more babies.
B. To tell us about China’s population number.
C. To show the good sides of the lower birth rate.
D. To enable us to care about the lower birth rate.
32. What will the writer probably talk about after the last paragraph?
A. How to keep setting up more schools.
B How to help people live for a longer time.
C. What people can do to solve the problems.
D. The story of China’s population in the past.
D
Free time is a great chance for teenagers to have fun. But what about free time when parents are around? Some teenagers want to play freely without parents watching over them, while parents and experts might think differently.
Lin Tao, a middle school student, believes teenagers should be able to play freely. “Last time I played with my parents nearby, I had a knot in my stomach and was unable to have a really good time,” Lin says. “My friend Chen Xiaoxin has the same kind of experiences. Once, he went out to play with his classmates, and everyone felt uncomfortable because his mother was watching.”
Wang Min, Lin Tao’s mother, thinks playtime needs parents’ supervision (监督). She says, “People often say I like to restrain my child, but that’s not true. I’m just worried he might get into trouble. Some kids might have a bad effect on him, and some games like LARP (剧本杀) might lead him the wrong way. He could even lose himself into the stories and have a hard time getting back to real life.”
Mr. Ma, a social studies doctor, says it’s easy to understand that teenagers want freedom. Playing freely helps them learn to be independent (独立的). Parents can give them more space. They don’t have to watch them all the time. But teenagers should know all the details (细节) about the activities before they go to play. Then they can talk with their parents and decide together if they can go out to play by themselves.
In my view, both teenagers’ freedom and parents’ supervision are important. They need free time, and they also need parents’ proper (恰当的) supervision.
33. Lin Tao supports his own idea by ________.
A. giving examples B. raising questions
C. comparing facts D. listing numbers
34. What does the underlined word “restrain” probably mean?
A. Hurt. B. Control. C. Protect. D. Encourage.
35. According to the text, which of the following may Mr. Ma support?
A He Kai’s parents are around every time he plays with his friends.
B. Feng Zhongfan’s parents never ask him about whom he plays with.
C. Liu Xiang will join in the activities without knowing anything about them.
D. Xie Hao told his parents where to go and whom to play with before playtime.
36. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. Teenagers need free time to be independent.
B. Parents should keep an eye on their children all the time.
C Teenagers can’t play LARP without parents’ supervision.
D. Teenagers need both freedom and parents’ proper supervision.

C. comparing facts D. listing numbers

C. Teenagers can’t play LARP without parents’ supervision.
