Passage 1
DIY Courses in UK Schools英国学校里的 DIY 课程
In the UK, more and more schools are adding DIY projects to their lessons. They want to help students be more creative and learn useful practical skills.
The DIY School has courses for people who have little or no experience with building or DIY. These courses teach many useful skills that people need. They are easy to join and fun, so students can learn new things without missing their other studies.
There is a training centre in Stockport, Cheshire, near Manchester. It has lots of good facilities for students to practice with their hands. This way, students get real, practical learning chances.
Students can learn to make wooden shelves or paint lamps. Teachers show them how to use glue and tape safely. Everyone enjoys making things with their own hands, and they feel proud when finished.

A
There is a busy street corner beside a bus station where kids change buses going to and from school. It’s not a pretty place. There’s noisy traffic and the nearby buildings are gray and unloved. However, it has a patch (小块地) of beauty—a small garden called Pete’s Patch.
Pete is one of the kids who wait here to change buses for nine minutes each day. In the past, it wasn’t a fun or pleasant place. There was nowhere nice to walk and the patch next to the station was littered with trash (垃圾). Pete had no choice because this was the only way.
He felt like he was wasting his life away. There was nothing to look at, nothing to keep him busy, and hanging around like that each day drove him mad. He knew he couldn’t do anything to change the bus company’s timetable, but he could make the nine minutes more enjoyable for himself and others.
He asked his mom for some trash bags. That week, he filled his nine minutes each day by picking up the trash. On the weekend, he asked his dad to drive down and take the trash bags to the dump (垃圾场). On Monday morning, the patch looked so much cleaner and nicer.
Then next week, Pete began to pull weeds (杂草). One of his friends came to help. Soon the patch was looking good, but some dirty words on the walls of the bus station were really making him angry.
Pete had an idea. He painted a mural (壁画) to cover the dirty words. When he started to work, more of his school friends joined him each day.
Now Pete and his friends are proud of that patch, and they sure aren’t going to let anyone mess it up. They have even planted some fresh flowers. While waiting for their next bus, they walk through the patch and collect trash.
One Monday, however, as he rode the bus to school, Pete looked, as usual, toward the patch. To his surprise, there was a sign on it. His friends had painted it. It read: Pete’s Patch.

Su Qingwu, a post-90s girl from Wenzhou, east China’s Zhejiang Province, has built a pavilion (亭子) in her garden by hand. It’s a copy of a pavilion in the Palace Museum.
As a photographer, Su often had chances to visit local handicraftsmen (手工艺人) and take photos when they were working. Slowly she became interested in traditional handicrafts and looked for information about them online. “It all began with a photo of a pavilion in the Palace Museum I saw on the Internet. I fell in love with the colors and structure of it. Why don’t I build one at home?” she said. Soon she began to bring the idea to life.
Building a pavilion without glue or nails wasn’t that easy for Su. She started to learn the woodworking skills (技能) by reading books and watching videos. She also searched every corner of the town for the things she needed. It seemed easy at first, but it was a different story when she was building the pavilion. She had trouble making a drawing of the pavilion at the beginning. She kept trying and found her own way, but the mortise-and-tenon joint (榫卯连接) was a big headache for her. In order to solve the problem, she visited the Palace Museum in person, found the pavilion in the photo, and studied the mortise-and-tenon joint carefully. Finally, her pavilion was finished.
It took Su 150 days to build her first pavilion. Later, she spent 200 days building a Tang-style pavilion. It is bigger and more difficult to build than the first one. She is now planning to create another copy of the pavilion in the Palace Museum in the near future. “I want to pass on the Chinese traditional handicrafts through building more pavilions, so more people can see them one day.” Su said. “I’m sure these traditional handicrafts’ show the confidence (信心) in Chinese culture.”

A.He pulled weeds with his friend. B.He planted flowers with his mom.
C.He changed the bus company’s timetable. D.He took a picture of the bus station’s walls.

A.Hardworking and shy. B.Humorous and smart.

A.She liked traditional handicrafts.
B.She liked taking photos in pavilions.
C.She wanted to help handicraftsmen.

3.词义猜测题。根据最后一段“I want to pass on the Chinese traditional handicrafts through building more pavilions, so more people can see them one day.”

The original (原始的) version of Along the River During the Qingming Festival, a five-meter-long picture describing the capital of Northern Song Dynasty during the Qingming Festival, is sometimes called China’s Mona Lisa, and considered by many people as one of the most important artworks in the country’s history. The work has been copied a few times, but the original, which dates back (追溯到) to the 12th century, is seldom showed because it is valuable.
Zhao Wenrui’s 32-meter-long chalk version draws around 550 people, including farmers, boatmen, and so on, as well as dozens of animals, buildings, bridges, and the environment itself.
