There is always a discussion about whether you should get your kids to do chores at home or not. However, getting kids to do housework is really good for children in many ways. So I find it hard to understand why you wouldn’t get them to do chores.
The most important reason is that getting children to do chores teaches them a lot of life skills. They need to know how to clean, how to cook, how to shop, etc. It is, however, one of the things that schools don’t teach completely, so it is one of the main parts of learning that parents should provide for children before they leave home.
Children like to feel proud about their achievements. Making them help around the house can really help to give them a sense of pride (自豪). Also, giving them praise (表扬) for helping will make them want to do more. They will feel happy to be able to help around the house.
Giving your children a job to do or an area in the house to look after will help them learn how to be responsible in their future life. They will see the benefit (益处) of keeping things organized, clean and tidy—and also be more thankful for what you do for them as they grow up.
Planning is a life skill that can be got from helping around the house. As children get older, you can start to teach them how to understand the needs of themselves and others and plan by themselves. For example, if they help with the washing, let them make sure that they do it in time. They may start to plan ahead (提前).
All these reasons for getting kids to help around the house mean that they’ll grow up with a great set of skills that can be good for them throughout their lives. Why not get started today?
16. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. The ways to make kids do chores.
B. The importance of kids doing chores.
C. The skills kids can learn at school.
17. What can kids learn from doing chores according to the passage?
A. Many life skills and how to plan their time.
B. How to finish housework in time and get praise.
C. How to be responsible and how to get good grades.
18. Which of the following best shows the structure (结构) of the passage? (P=Paragraph)
A. B. C.
19. What does the writer think about letting kids do chores?
A. He is against it. B. He doesn’t care about it. C. He agrees with it.
20. What is the best title of this passage?
A. Why Kids Should Do Chores
B. The Secrets of Teaching Life Skills
C. How to Plan for the Future

三、阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,计10分)
阅读下面短文,完成短文后的问题。
Floods (洪水) often happen after or during heavy rain. Too much water can cause damage (损害) to homes and roads and can even wash cars away. More importantly, floods can be very dangerous to people’s lives as well.
If a flood happens suddenly without getting prepared, people may have no way to run. The weather report helps people prepare for heavy rain and floods. People try to protect their things by putting sandbags in front of their doors to stop water from coming into their homes. Floods are more likely to come to lower places, so people living in lower areas or near rivers are more likely to be in danger. If the heavy rain is reported early, the people in these areas will be saved before the floods arrive.
Some scientists say that because of global warming (全球变暖) more places may have heavy rain and floods. Because it’s difficult to stop the floods, scientists spend time on ways of finding them earlier so that people can run away quickly.
Floods can happen quickly in many parts of the world. We need to prepare earlier and act quickly before they begin. Stay away from water and get to higher ground during the floods. Finally, go back home carefully. There could be something dangerous in the dirty water that washes into your home. Clean your home as soon as possible after the flood is gone.

Some scientists say that because of global warming (全球变暖), more places may have heavy rain and floods.

【答案】例文
Dear Bob,
Thanks for your letter. I’m sorry to hear that you are not happy these days. It’s normal to have these feelings.
I know you are busy every day and you have a lot of stress from school. You’d better talk to your parents. You should let them know life shouldn’t just be about grades, although they want you to get good grades. Playing sports and hanging out with friends can help you relax and be happy.
Why don’t you sit down and talk with your brother? You should explain that it is impolite to look through your things without telling you and tell him to say sorry. If he wants to look through your things, he should ask first. I think you can get on well with each other.
