Who are your friends at school? Do you think that everyone should have a “best friend”? Students share their ideas on friendship and being one’s true self.
Friendship (友谊) is like a cup of warm cocoa. Some people like to share it with other people, but some like to drink it by themselves. It is not important to have someone walk the same road with you. The important thing is that this road brings you nearer to your true self. So don’t worry. You can have many friends, or just a few. True freedom (自由) is being able to love or enjoy the peace of being alone in your own way.
— Xiao Ziyu, 13, Suixi Middle School, Sichuan
There’s a saying: “If you have friends who know your heart, distance can’t keep you away.” I think this is true. Having a real friend is very important. My best friend is different from me, but we often think alike. We work well together and help each other. When I’m sad about my grades, he stays with me and tells me how to do better next time. We are competitors, but we share our favorite study tips too. Friendship is about helping each other, sharing happiness, competing in a good way and cheering each other on.
— Gong Ruliang, 14, No. 4 Middle School of Gongzhuling, Jilin
I think it’s nice to have a best friend at school. He or she can be there with you and listen to you. However, it’s hard to find a perfect friend. So try to make different kinds of friends and share different things with each of them. Friends are the magnets (磁铁). Great friends stick (贴合) well, and your best friend sticks the most. One friend may leave, but some can always fill the space. Each of my friends can teach me something special, and we help each other grow.

Following the national policy (政策), more and more schools in China now have two new holidays for students — the spring holiday and the autumn holiday. These holidays come between long school terms — spring holiday is usually in April, and autumn holiday is in November. They are not long. Usually, they last 3 to 5 days. Students don’t need to go to school during these days.
Why do schools do this? There are two reasons. First, these short holidays let the students have a good rest from their busy study. They can sleep for a long time or play with friends at home. Second, students can go out with their parents. They may go to the zoos, small farms or fun parks. This helps them learn more about life outside school — things they can’t find in textbooks.
Teachers and parents all think these holidays are good. Teachers say when students go back to school after the holidays, they feel happier and more active (活跃的). They listen better in class and ask more questions. Now, these spring and autumn holidays are becoming popular in more and more cities. What do you think of them? Do you have them in your school?

— Hu Tian, 16, Chengdu High School
