What do you usually do before exams?
Are there any special traditions in your country?
3 replies (回复) Li Yan (Henan) 6 June
In the UK, there are lots of fun traditions before exams. In some countryside areas of England, you can see “wishing trees”. People put coins into the trees. Students think this can bring good luck from the “tree spirits”. At the University of Oxford, there’s a tradition. Students touch the “Kissing Stone”, an old stone inside the chapel (教堂), to have good luck. Also, some students don’t eat chicken before exams. The reason is funny: They don’t want to be a “chicken” and get afraid easily during the exam!

In South Korea (韩国), we give our friends sticky rice cakes (糯米糕) before exams. This is because the word “stick” has the same sound as “pass” in Korean. People believe eating sticky food helps students “stick” to success and pass their tests. It’s a way to show support and wish each other good luck. I remember when my best friend had a big test, I bought his favourite sticky rice cakes to cheer him up. This tradition makes us feel warm and strong before exams.

In Türkiye, we have special exam traditions. Before tests, students drink “examtea” made with apple and cloves (丁香). We touch our heads twice, like knocking on doors, and say “Bilgi gelsin!” That means “Let me be clever”! And here's an important rule: Always enter the exam hall with your right foot first—stepping in with your left foot means bad luck! This tradition is widely believed, and students often feel worried about choosing the wrong foot.

“Stay close to us,” his parents told him before they started their journey. But Henry got very excited about all the new things on the trip, especially the golden forests and some beautiful flowers.
That day, while flying, he saw a flash (闪现) of light below. “What was that?” Henry was attracted and flew down to check it out. “Wow!” Henry shouted as he found a big, pretty lake. The sun was shining brightly on the lake, and its light was just like little stars on the water. He circled the lake, laughing as he played with his reflection (倒影). The water was so clear, and he could see his tiny blue form dancing on the surface. When he flew up and called out to his family, no one answered. They already flew away, thinking he was still with them.
Henry flew around to look for his family but had no luck. He felt sad and tired. Suddenly, he remembered another tip his parents told him. “If you get lost, stay where we were last together. Stand in a high place so we can see you when we come back.”
Henry returned to the lake and stood on the tallest tree nearby. While waiting, he met some other birds. He told them he was lost. The birds sang loudly together and their song was beautiful and full of hope. Soon, the song spread far away. It helped Henry’s family find him at last!

Do you ever listen to people talking on the radio? Do you think how much fun it must be? There are ways to start your own radio show and have your voice heard. Taking part in a radio show helps you work as part of a team. It’s interesting for you to speak in a radio show while people in your area are listening.
If you start your own radio station at your school, you’ll learn how to use the tools and make the programmes (节目) with your friends. Learning to speak on the radio can help practise your skills and make you express yourself better, or you may like sitting behind the scenes and writing reports and stories.
Lots of small radio stations today are online and people can choose any of them without stepping out of their home. A company, called Radio.co, can get you started right now, and you can get a helper. It may cost you some money, but not much. You might also choose a small community radio station near you. Community stations often talk about stories and events close to you.
Vick Hope and Roman Kemp, the hosts of Capital FM’s breakfast show, are now writing a book about how to start a radio show. “There are so many types of radio shows. I often give young people advice on starting one—the key is ‘just do it’!” Hope says, “Also, listen to what is happening around you and see if you can make a different type of show.” Kemp adds, “Don’t worry too much if you have no idea about technology (技术), just practise and even use things like a phone or tablet to start.”
23. Why does the writer use two questions at the beginning of paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the interesting radio shows.
B. To get answers from the last paragraph.
C. To make readers interested in radio shows.
D. To ask readers to listen to a radio show.
24. What does starting a radio show help you do according to the first two paragraphs?
①save more money ②enjoy the fun of having local listeners
③learn about teamwork ④get more experience in radio shows
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ①③④ D. ②③④
25. What is the feature of many small radio stations today?
A. They offer help and tools to people for free.
B. They are online and people can work at home.
C. They work for large companies like Radio.co.
D. They focus largely on international news and events.
26. What advice do both Vick Hope and Roman Kemp give young people?
A. Read the book by both of them. B. Listen to their voices to help people.
C. Buy a phone or a tablet for a show. D. Just start simply and try to practise.
27. What is the main idea of this article?
A. A personal story of a famous radio show.
B. Tips for readers on how to start a radio show.

The Sound of Trees
Everyone has their own way to protect our planet—some pick up rubbish, and others stop using plastic bags. But for composer (作曲家) Liang Haoyi, he chooses music. Through his new work Tree, Liang calls on people to protect trees and respect nature.
Tree is made up of five movements (乐章). The first part brings people into a lively forest. Sweet birdsong is heard with the sound of leaves waving gently in the wind. As the forest turns quiet, a cello (大提琴) starts to sing softly. It sounds like a tree telling its peaceful life story. In the next movement, the music becomes faster. It brings to mind the sad scene of people cutting down trees one by one. The forest becomes impossible to see slowly as the music goes on. Then, the third part shows how people feel sorry for cutting down trees. They start to ask themselves what they should do to make things right. After that comes a powerful movement. People take action to plant new trees and rebuild the nature. The final movement is filled with bright tunes (曲调), with people finally bringing back the green mountains.
Before he started writing Tree, Liang took a walk deep into the forests, with his ears fully open. The beautiful sounds of trees, birds and the wind were like a special gift to his ears, giving him lots of ideas for his music.
Liang hopes people could hear the message in his music. “To some people, one tree may seem unimportant, but a forest starts to lose its life as soon as the first tree falls,” he said. “I hope everyone will care for every tree. If we all work on it together, small trees can grow into great forests, and forests can grow into green mountains.”

Dear Mike,
I’m glad you’re going to my hometown this summer holiday. Here’s my plan for your one-day trip. I am sure you will have fun!
First, we’ll try crab soup dumplings for breakfast. They are famous here and taste delicious! Please be careful while eating, because the juicy dumplings are very hot. Next, we’ll climb Hill Gushan. The view from the top is amazing, and you can take great photos. Don’t worry—it’s not too high! After lunch, we’ll visit the Clay Art Museum to see beautiful handmade sculptures. The museum has over 100 clay artworks, and you can even try making one yourself!
What do you think of my plan? I can’t wait to show you around my hometown!
Best wishes!
