Almost all cultures celebrate the end of one year and the beginning of another in some ways. Different cultures celebrate the beginning of a new year in different ways, and at different time on the calendar.
In Western countries, people usually celebrate New Year at midnight on 31st December--1st January. People may go to parties, sometimes dressed in formal (正式的) clothes, and they may drink champagne (香槟酒) at midnight. During the first minutes of the new year, people cheer and wish each other happiness for the year ahead. But some cultures prefer to celebrate the new year by waking up early to watch the sunrise. They welcome the new year with the first light of the sunrise.
Many cultures also do special things to get rid of (摆脱) bad luck at the beginning of a new year. For example, in Ecuador, families make a big doll from old clothes. The doll is filled with old newspapers and firecrackers. At midnight, these dolls are burned to show the bad things from the past year are gone and the new year can start afresh (重新). Other common traditions to keep away from bad luck in a new year include throwing things into rivers or the ocean, or saving special things on the first day of the new year.
Other New Year traditions are followed to bring good luck in the new year. One widespread Spanish tradition for good luck is to eat grapes on New Year’s Day. The more grapes a person eats, the more good luck the person will have in the new year. In France, people eat pancakes for good lock at New Year. The Chongyang Festival falls on the ninth day of the ninth month of the Chinese lunar calendar, so it is also known as the Double Ninth Festival. The festival is held in the golden season of autumn, at harvest-time. The bright clear weather and the joy of bringing in the harvest make for a festival happy atmosphere. The Chongyang Festival is usually perfect for outdoor activities. Climbing a mountain, carrying a spray of dogwood (茱萸) and drinking chrysanthemum (菊花) wine have become the traditional activities of the festival.
The dogwood is a plant with a strong fragrance (香气), and is often used as a Chinese herbal medicine. People in ancient times believed it could drive away evil spirits and prevent one from getting a chill (寒意) in late autumn. So its history as a medicine goes back many centuries. But the custom of carrying a spray of dogwood during the Double Ninth Festival is slowly dying out and many people in the cities, do not even know what a dogwood spray looks like.
Early in Han Dynasty, about 2000 years ago, people used to climb a high platform outside the capital city of Chang’an on the occasion of the Chongyang Festival. For many, it was the last outing of the year before the onset of winter. The custom evolved (发展成) into present form, when people go climbing to get some exercises as well as enjoy the autumn scenery.
But what about those people who live in plains far from any mountain? The problem is solved by going for a picnic and eating cakes. The Chinese word for “cake” is “Gao”, a homony of the Chinese word for “high”. Mountains are high, so eating cakes can, by a stretch of the imagination, take the place of going for a climb.

Two More Days Off in 2025
①To provide longer breaks for people, public holidays in China will be lengthened (变长) by two days from January 2025, according to new holiday rules announced by officials on Tuesday.
②Under the new plan, the Spring Festival holiday will increase from three to four days, now including Lunar New Year’s Eve on Jan 28, being an eight-day holiday period. The May Day holiday will also grow to two days, with May 2 newly added, creating a five-day break. To achieve longer holiday periods, extra working days before or after the holidays will be set to balance out these longer breaks. For example, for the Spring Festival, Jan 26 and Feb 8 will be set as workdays, allowing people to enjoy an eight-day holiday instead of just four days.
③The changes also have an influence on other public holidays. New Year’s Day on Jan 1, the Tomb-Sweeping Day (清明), and the Dragon Boat Festival holidays will each last three days. Besides, the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holiday will fall on the same days next year, being in eight-day holiday beginning on Oct 1.
④To solve public worries about extra workdays around long holidays, the new rules say that workdays before and after national holidays will not be more than six days in a row, except in special situations. Since the announcement, data (数据) from travel platforms (平台) has shown a rise in ticket searches and bookings within half an hour. For example, ticket searches for the 2025 Spring Festival holiday on the Internet, were 2.2 times higher than usual, with travelers from cities like Chengdu, Zhengzhou, and Shanghai already booking flights for Lunar New Year’s Eve. The Spring Festival, also called the Chinese New Year, is the most important festival in China. It is a time for welcome the new year and spending time with family and friends. However, not all Chinese celebrate it in the same way. Some ethnic groups (少数民族) have their own traditions for this special festival.

Have you ever heard of “Buy Nothing Day”? Do you think you can’t spend a coin on that day? This holiday encourages people to stop buying things. It began in the 1990s in Vancouver, Canada. It was the idea of a man named Kalle Lasn. After making ads for many years, Lasn began to question the ways ads influenced people.
Lasn knows that people need to buy things. They have to buy things to eat, live and even enjoy life. But Lasn believes that many ads encourage people to buy far more than necessary. He thinks it hurts people and culture.
Lasn tries to help people understand some of the false values and ideas behind advertising. The main value he fights is the idea “You must buy more to be happy”. Encouraging people to celebrate “Buy Nothing Day” is one idea he came up with.
“Buy Nothing Day” is celebrated on the fourth Friday of every November. Lasn chose this day for a very important reason. It is one of the biggest shopping days of the year. Advertisers call this day Black Friday.
The first “Buy Nothing Day” was celebrated in Canada in 1992. Many other countries also have growing problems with too much buying. Now, over sixty different countries, including the USA, the UK, Germany, France, Japan, are celebrating “Buy Nothing Day”.
Some people don’t believe “Buy Nothing Day” can really change culture. “It is only one day,” they say. Other people say that consumers should not just cut down their shopping quantity (数量), but also increase their shopping quality. These people encourage consumers to buy things made in environment-friendly ways.
But “Buy Nothing Day” does make people think about the bad influences of buying too much.

二、阅读理解
To celebrate the day, people usually climb mountains and enjoy chrysanthemums (菊花), so the festival is also known as the Height Ascending (登高) Festival or the Chrysanthemum Festival. In Chinese, nine has the same pronunciation with the word “久”, meaning a long life. So the Chinese government set the day as the Seniors’ Day.
The festival has a history of over 2,000 years. It began to be popular among the common people from the Han Dynasty. The name of the Chongyang Festival first appeared in the Three Kingdoms Period. But it was not officially set as a festival until the Tang Dynasty. Since then, all the people have spent the festival with many kinds of activities. In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, people in the imperial palace ate flower cakes to celebrate. The emperor climbed the mountain on the day as well.
In 1989, the Chinese government set the day as the Seniors’ Day. On the day, enjoying chrysanthemums is very popular as the flower means a long life.
58.Why do people carry a spray of dogwood on Chongyang Festival?
A.Because the dogwood is a plant with a strong fragrance.
B.Because the dogwood can be used as a Chinese herbal medicine.
C.Because the dogwood has a long history as a medicine.

The UNESCO added “Spring Festival, social practices of the Chinese people in celebration of the traditional New Year” to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (人类非物质文化遗产代表作名录) on December 4, 2024. The Spring Festival, also called the Chinese New Year, is the most important festival in China. It is a time for welcome the new year and spending time with family and friends. However, not all Chinese celebrate it in the same way. Some ethnic groups (少数民族) have their own traditions for this special festival.
During the Spring Festival, Zhuang people have some interesting customs. On the day of the Spring Festival, they always get up early. They believe sleeping in will make crops (庄稼) grow slowly. On that day, Zhuang people also race to get the first bucket (桶) of water from the river. They think it could bring good luck to their family for the whole year.
Over half of the Miao people live in Guizhou. They have their own New Year’s Day. There is no exact fixed date for the Miao New Year. It is often celebrated after the rice harvest and lasts for 3 to 15 days. During that time, Miao people wear traditional clothes and play the lusheng.
Yao people are mostly in the south of China. During the Spring Festival, they often watch the “farm show”. In this show, one person dresses up as a cow, and two others play the roles of farmers. Together, they sing and dance to celebrate the harvest (丰收).
