At a coffee shop, my daughter shouted, “Dad, bring Teddy and pony to bath time!” A woman behind us laughed. “What language is that?” she asked. My husband explained, “Our family mixes three languages. He speaks Irish (from Ireland), I speak Serbian (from Serbia), and we use English together.” Since moving to Wyoming, we’re teaching our daughter all three.
Many people smile at this. They probably think Serbian and Irish aren’t “useful” globally. But my mom taught me a different way to value languages.
My mom, born in Bosnia, grew up as a “language chameleon.” She changed smoothly from speaking Serbian to speaking English. After moving to America, she made me promise: “Never forget your first language.” To her, language isn’t just words—it’s our family’s history.
For my mom, Serbian was also safety. When strangers followed us, she’d say firmly (坚定地) in Serbian, “Make a scene!”—a phrase that meant, “Stay strong!” Serbian became our secret shield (防护).
More than protection, our language was our safe space. When talking about hard things, Mom would say, “Try your mother tongue (母语).” Often, forgotten Serbian words would pop into my head. We’d look them up together, sharing stories. This made our bond stronger.
Now, I want the same for my daughter. I want her to switch languages like her grandma—a chameleon who belongs everywhere. Maybe Serbian will help her find safety someday. Maybe Irish will connect her to Dad’s roots. Most of all, I want to tell her...

(2025·湖北襄阳·一模)Golden apples hanging on the backyard tree finally made me understand my father’s silent love. But three years ago, when I was a 13-year-old boy, I thought adults knew nothing about life.
That warm spring day, Dad came home holding a small apple sapling (树苗). “Let’s plant it together,” he said. I shook my head. “Why waste time? The store sells apples ready to eat!” But he smiled, quietly opened the roots.
For weeks, I complained (抱怨) as we watered the weak tree. “It’ll never grow!” I said angrily when the strong summer storms nearly made it fall over. Father simply saved it with bamboo sticks, saying, “Good things take time, just like building a strong house.” At that time, I didn’t get what he meant.
Our final exams were at the end of the term. Since I failed math, I tore (撕) my test paper angrily. “I’m done!” Father found me sitting next to our knee-high tree. Instead of giving long speeches, he pointed at its new leaves. “Do you remember when it almost didn’t make it through the storm? Now it’s standing tall, all because it refused to give up!”
I realized it all of a sudden. I began to study just as the tree grew, slowly yet surely. My father quietly cheered me on. During late-night studying, he’d put energy drinks beside my books. Even without saying anything, his strong hand on my shoulder said it all.

Growing up in Argentina, Luke was always interested in ancient civilizations (文明). His dream was to live and work near the mountains. In school, Luke worked hard to reach his goal. Math was a subject he really had to conquer!
Now, Luke uses math all the time. “How many feet will we climb? How long will it take? What time do we start?” He knows that careful planning can mean the difference between success and failure.
In 1999, Luke and his team climbed Llullaillaco, a mountain in Argentina. It was a very difficult climb, with blowing snow, strong winds and thin air.
When the explorers finally reached the top, they found three frozen Incan mummies (木乃伊). Two girls and a boy were buried 500 years ago.

Curiosity got the better of Andy, so he spoke to the farmer. “Why do you look so worried? Have you planted wheat?” Andy asked. The farmer slowly shook his head. His face was marked with worry as he spoke, “I’ve noticed that the weather isn’t great and I’m worried that if it rains, the newly planted wheat might get wet. There’s a chance it won’t sprout (发芽) at all, or even worse, it could rot (腐烂) in the soil.”
