A Thousands of tiny baby penguins starved after changing weather forced their parents to walk across Antarctica in search of food. 18,000 pairs of Adelie penguins in Terre Adelie,Antarctica suffered the terrible breeding (繁殖) failure earlier this year, according to WWF. The event happened because unusually plenty of sea ice forced their parents to travel further in search of food, leaving their chicks at home to starve,a reminder of the fearful effects of the changing climate. Though Adelie penguins are generally doing well in East Antarctica, they are decreasing in the area, where the effects of climate change are already being felt. Four years ago,the same area had another, similar shock.20,196 pairs suffered, and not a single one was able to produce a chick. That time around, unusual numbers of sea ice combined (结合) with warm weather and rain, before a rapid drop in temperature. Many of the chicks froze to death. “Adelie penguins are one of the hardiest and most amazing animals on our planet, said Rod Downie, head of polar programmes at WWF. “The risk of opening up this area to krill fisheries (磷虾渔场),which will compete with the Adelie penguins for food as they recover from two breeding failures in four years,is unthinkable. So a new Marine Protected Area for the waters off East Antarctica needs to be found to protect the home of the penguins.” “A Marine Protected Area,or MPA,will allow the penguins to be kept from activities that can further affect their numbers,” scientists who work there say. [语篇解读] 本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了由于气候变化,成年的阿德利企鹅不得不到更远的地方寻找食物,最终导致了阿德利企鹅遭遇繁殖失败,数量急剧减少。 1.What is the original reason for 18,000 pairs of Adelie penguins suffering breeding failure earlier this year? A.They had to leave home further for food. B.The effects of the changing climate. C.Their chicks were left at home to starve. D.There was plenty of sea ice. 解析:B [细节理解题。根据第一段内容Thousands of tiny baby penguins starved after changing weather forced their parents to walk across Antarctica in search of food.和第三段内容The event happened because unusually plenty of sea ice forced their parents to travel further in search of food, leaving their chicks at home to starve,a reminder of the fearful effects of the changing climate.可知,是由于气候的变化,导致企鹅的父母需要前往更远的地方寻找食物,成千上万的小企鹅留在家里挨饿,最终导致了阿德利企鹅遭遇繁殖失败。由此可知,今年早些时候,18000对阿德利企鹅遭遇繁殖失败的根本原因是气候变化的影响。故选B项。] 2.What should people do to protect the home of the Adelie penguins? A.To open up that area to krill fisheries. B.To produce much more food for them. C.To find a new MPA for them. D.To let them as they are, nothing done. 解析:C [细节理解题。根据倒数第二段关键句So a new Marine Protected Area for the waters off East Antarctica needs to be found to protect the home of the penguins.和最后一段内容“A Marine Protected Area,or MPA,will allow the penguins to be kept from activities that can further affect their numbers,” scientists who work there say.” 3.What is Rod Downie's attitude to opening up this area to krill fisheries? A.Opposed. B.Unconcerned. C.Supportive. D.Doubtful. 根据倒数第二段中Rod Downie的话The risk of opening up this area to krill fisheries (磷虾渔场),which will compete with the Adelie penguins for food as they recover from two breeding failures in four years,is unthinkable. 故选A项。] B Dragging a sleigh loaded with enough presents for the world's children can be no easy skill. But,since ancient times, the duty has been performed by a team of beloved reindeer. Soon, however,we may have to start looking around for a stronger type of animal,as new research shows the species is becoming increasingly puny .A 16year survey on the arctic Norwegian islands,Svalbard, found the reindeer there have declined in weight by an alarming 12 percent. The reduction in average body weight is being blamed on global warming. In the research presented lately at a meeting of the British Ecological Society in Liverpool, scientists have explained how upward temperatures are robbing female reindeer of nutrients during important periods of pregnancy. Snow in Svalbard typically covers the ground for eight months of a year, which, combined with low temperatures, limits grass growth to June and July. But as summer temperatures increase by around 1.5℃,grass has become more productive, allowing female reindeer to gain more weight by autumn and therefore to have more babies. However, winters have brought with them greater rainfall which freezes when it settles on the snow.Reindeer can often access the poor food sources beneath the snow by clearing it away with their antlers (鹿角),but they cannot break through the hard ice.As a result, female reindeer are becoming starved, causing them to lose their babies or give birth to the much lighter young. Despite the findings, reindeer appear to be suffering less from the effect of climate change than some other arctic species.Last week the scientists warned that a third of the world's polar bears could disappear in the next 40 years. 4.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “puny” in Paragraph 2? A.Strong. B.Mature. C.Heavy. D.Weak. 根据第二段中的we may have to start looking around for a stronger type of animal和have declined in weight可知,puny 的意思是说驯鹿变得越来越瘦小、虚弱,故答案为 D。] 5.Why do female reindeer become fat in autumn? A.The temperature is getting low. B.They give birth to more babies. C.Grass grows well during the period. D.They often break through the hard ice. 根据第四段中的But as summer temperatures increase by around 1.5 ℃,grass has become more productive, allowing female reindeer to gain more weight by autumn and therefore to have more babies可知,气温的上升使得草更多产,结果让雌性驯鹿体重在秋季越来越重,故答案为 C。] 6.What can we infer from the text? A.Climate change has little effect on reindeer. B.Polar bears suffer more from climate change. C.Reindeer have no trouble finding food in winter. D.Polar bears will disappear totally in the near future. B。] 7.What does the text mainly talk about? A.The duty of dragging a sleigh will not be carried out by reindeer. B.Reindeer have decreased in weight owing to global warming. C.Global warming contributes to more young reindeer. D.Many arctic species are at the risk of dying out. Donald opened the door of his pet parrot's cage and slid in his index finger(食指).Donald's parrot,Sunshine, jumped excitedly onto the finger. “How are you doing today,Sunshine?”__1__ Sunshine munched (用力咀嚼)happily on the grass while Donald put the bird on his shoulder and walked across the room to his desk. “I need to earn some money,Sunshine,” Donald said to the bird, which was now placed atop Donald's head.“But who will hire someone of my age,and what am I good at?” __2__ “I'm responsible,” he said to Sunshine as he wrote,“and I like people and animals, but,on the other hand,I'm too young to drive, and I don't have much experience in performing most jobs.” __3__ After a couple of rings, the phone quieted,so Donald knew his mother had answered the phone. He heard an unclear conversation from the room as he continued his job musings(沉思). __4__ She laughed when she saw Sunshine stay happily on Donald's head.“That was Mrs.Johannson on the telephone,” she reported.“She wants to know if you would be willing to take care of their two parrots while the Johannsons are out of town next week.__5__ Donald grinned (咧嘴笑)from ear to ear. A.She's even willing to pay a little. B.You might be too busy to take the job. C.Donald was worried about his future job. D.Donald asked as he held out a leaf of grass to the bird. E.A few minutes later,Donald's mother walked into his room. F.Donald was thinking about his options when he heard the telephone ring in another room. G.Donald tore a sheet of paper out of a notebook and began writing down the things he was good at. [语篇解读] 本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了喜欢小动物的Donald想要通过自己的劳动赚一些钱。他正在思索此事时,电话铃响了,机会来了,他将如愿以偿。 1.D [上文How are you doing today,Sunshine?是直接引语一个问句,选项D“Donald一边问一边向鸟伸出一片草。”承接上文,说明上文中的问句是Donald问的,并介绍他的一个喂鸟的动作,引出下文Sunshine munched (用力咀嚼)happily on the grass...,语义相关,合乎逻辑。故选D项。] 2.G [上文But who will hire someone of my age,and what am I good at?” 选项G承接上文,描述Donald开始写自己擅长的东西,引出下文“I'm responsible,” he said to Sunshine as he wrote,选项中the things he was good at和上文中what am I good at语义一致;选项中writing和下文wrote语义一致。故选G项。] 3.F [下文After a couple of rings, the phone quieted,so Donald knew his mother had answered the phone. 选项中the telephone ring和下文中a couple of rings, the phone语义相关。故选F项。] 4.E [根据上文的分析可知,上文He heard an unclear conversation from the room as he continued his job musings. She laughed when she saw Sunshine stay happily on Donald's head.,描述妈妈走进他的房间后的活动,事情发展前后逻辑合理。故选E项。] 5.A [根据全文的理解可知,后文Donald grinned (咧嘴笑)from ear to ear. 故选A项。]
