Waiting for the bus every morning and going to school has never been better for Ryder Killam, a 5-year-old boy in a wheelchair from Westerly, Rhode Island, who was born with disability. He no longer has to wait for the school bus in the open air thanks to Westerly High School students.
The goal of the boy’s father, Tim Killam, was to keep his little kid protected from the bad weather while waiting for the bus every morning, and getting some kind of shelter (避雨处) was actually his idea. He asked for an unused bus shelter on Facebook. After not being able to find a suitable one, he decided to contact the high school which had already finished several building projects.
The students from Westerly High School construction (建造) class, among whom is one of Ryder’s brothers, quickly put their hands to work. The bus stop was designed by pupil Mason Heald, who was in regular contact with the Killams for feedback.
The construction class, led by Dan McKenna, teaches its members building skills and is part of the high school’s Career and Technical Education programme.
“This was a design to final products and delivery. It’s the best we could have asked for. It’s really what these programmes should be about,” said Michael Hobin, Westerly High School’s principal.
More people from the local community chipped in to help make the project happen. One of McKenna’s former students transported the shelter from the high school to the Killams’ address with his truck. And another neighbour helped to properly position the shelter by the bus stop.
Not only did Ryder’s daily life improve, but the students also learnt an unforgettable life lesson. They saw that with their skills and knowledge they can make a real difference in someone else’s life.
24. Why did Tim Killam turn to a high school for help?
A. Few people helped him. B. The school was close to him.
C. His son put forward the suggestion. D. He couldn’t find a right shelter.
25. What does the underlined phrase “chipped in” in paragraph 6 mean?
A. Joined in. B. Focused on.
C. Picked up. D. Referred to.
26. What’s the author’s attitude to what people did in building the shelter?
A. Amazed. B. Appreciative.
C. Unclear. D. Doubtful.
27. What’s the best title for the text?
A. A dream come true B. An amazing bus stop
C. A lucky disabled child D. A warm and comfortable shelter
D 25. A 26. B 27. D
根据第二段中“He asked for an unused bus shelter on Facebook. After not being able to find a suitable one, he decided to contact the high school which had already finished several building projects. (他在Facebook上发布信息,希望找到一个闲置的公交候车亭。在未能找到合适的之后,他决定联系当地那所已经完成过多个建筑项目的高中)”可知,他找不到合适的候车亭,所以才向高中求助。故选D项。
【25题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线部分的下文“One of McKenna’s former students transported the shelter from the high school to the Killams’ address with his truck. And another neighbour helped to properly position the shelter by the bus stop. (McKenna老师的一名往届学生用卡车将候车亭从高中运到了Killam家附近。另外,还有一位邻居帮忙把候车亭准确安置在了公交站旁边)”可知,当地社区的更多人参与进来帮助实现这个项目,画线部分chipped in意为“加入,参与”。故选A项。

They saw that with their skills and knowledge they can make a real difference in someone else’s life.
通读全文,尤其是第一段中“He no longer has to wait for the school bus in the open air thanks to Westerly High School students. (多亏了Westerly高中学生们的帮助,他再也不用在露天等候校车了)”可知,文章讲述了残疾男孩Ryder因为当地高中生和社区成员的帮助,终于有了一个遮风挡雨的公交候车亭的故事。因此,D项“一个温暖舒适的候车亭”概括了事件的核心,体现了人们的善意,最适合作为文章标题。故选D项。

Animals are natural resources that people have wasted all through our history. Animals have been killed for their fur and feathers, for food, for sport. Thousands of kinds of animals have disappeared from the world forever. Hundreds more are on the danger list today. About 170 kinds in the United States alone are considered in danger.
Why should people care? Because we need animals. And because once they are gone, there will never be any more. Animals are more than just beautiful and interesting. They are more than just a source of food. Every animal has its place in the balance of nature. Destroying one kind of animal can create many problems. For example, when farmers killed large numbers of hawks, the farmers’ stores of corn and grain were destroyed by rats and mice. Why? Because hawks eat rats and mice. With no hawks to keep down their numbers, the rats and mice increased quickly.
Luckily, some people are working to help save the animals. Some groups raise money to let people know about the problem. And they try to get the governments to pass laws protecting animals in danger. Quite a few countries have passed laws. These laws forbid the killing of any animals or plants on the danger list. Slowly, the number of some animals in danger is growing.

Thanks to this new hands-free suitcase, carrying around heavy luggage may soon become a thing of the past. Designed by an Israeli company NUA Robotics, this “smart” suitcase will follow you everywhere you go.
The carry-on suitcase, currently a prototype (雏形), connects to a smart phone app via Bluetooth. It has a built-in camera sensor that can “see” you and follow you around on flat surfaces like airport floors. It comes with an anti-theft alarm to prevent someone carrying it away when you’re not looking and it has a backup battery that you can use to charge all your devices.
“It can follow and carry things for people around while communicating with their smart phone, and avoiding obstacles,” explained Alex Libman, founder of NUA Robotics. “We’re combining sensor network, computer vision, and robotics. So if you download our app, press the follow-me button, the luggage recognizes the specific user and knows to follow and communicate.”
NUA is still testing the device and trying to improve features like speed and customization (定制), but they hope to make the suitcase available to customers in a year’s time. If it proves successful, they want to use the Bluetooth pairing technology to automate lots of other devices, like shopping carts at the supermarket. These devices are especially meant to be useful to the physically disabled and elderly. “Any object can be smart and robotic,” Libman said, “We want to bring robots into everyday life.”
The Israeli tech company made it clear that the finished product will look just like a regular suitcase. They’re planning to partner with a carry-on luggage maker, since the device that makes it “smart” weighs just 2.5 pounds and can be fitted on old-fashion luggage.
With NUA’s smart suitcase, carrying round heavy luggage isn’t a burden. But how their invention will handle tough obstacles like stairs? It will be interesting to wait.
32. Why can this carry-on suitcase follow you?
A. Because there is a camera sensor inside.
B. Because there exists an anti-theft alarm.
C. Because it can recognize your smell.
D. Because a battery plays a key part.
33. According to the passage, the “smart” suitcase _______.
A. can go everywhere
B. is on sale now
C. can make our hands free during traveling
D. was designed by Alex Libman
34. What can we learn about NUA?
A. It is an Israeli tech company producing mobile phones.
B. It has improved the features of the device.
C. It will make the suitcase available to customers in a month.
D. It wants to bring more smart and robotic devices into everyday life.
35. Where does the article probably come from?

根据上文“To find out the answers, an American reporter recently visited some of the most successful people around the world.”(为了找寻问题的答案,近日一位美国记者拜访了世界上多位最为成功的人士。)。以及下文小标题“Be responsible for yourself.”(对自己负责。)
根据上文 “Sometimes you may want to blame others for your failure to get ahead. In fact, when you say someone or something apart from yourself is stopping you from making success, you're giving away your own power.”( 有时,你可能想把自己的失败归咎于他人。
根据下文“Without this "map", you may waste your time, money and also your energy; while with the "map", you'll enjoy the "trip" and get what you want in the shortest possible time.”( 没有这张“地图”,你可能会浪费你的时间、金钱和精力;使用“地图”,您将享受“旅行”,并在尽可能短的时间内得到您想要的东西。) 故选A项。
通过下文“Nothing great is easy to get. So you must be ready to work hard—even harder than you have ever done. If you are not willing to pay the price, you won't get anything valuable.”(没有什么好东西是容易得到的。
以及下文中的“When you are doing something, you must tell yourself again and again: Giving up is worse than failure because failure can be the mother of success, but giving up means the death of hope.”( 当你在做某事时,你必须一次又一次地告诉自己:放弃比失败更糟糕,因为失败是成功之母,但放弃意味着希望的破灭。)

Dear schoolmates,
Because of water pollution and ever-lasting population, human beings face serious water crisis. Aimed at saving water, the water-saving program has been held recently in our school. As for us students, it’s essential and vital to take part in it.
Actually, there are many phenomena of water wasting in our daily life. For example, many students spend too much time having a shower and don’t turn off the tap immediately after washing hands, both of which lead to water wasting. Therefore, effective measures should be taken to raise everyone’s awareness of saving water. First, we can take a bath instead of taking a shower, and turn off the tap immediately after washing hands. Besides, reusing water is also a good way to save water.
My dear friends, let’s work hand in hand to take action immediately. Every effort counts.

Boys like to be considered to be brave, but what kind of things can be considered to be brave? It is not a question that can be answered by words, but by the actual deed. A boy with the name Henry gave us a good example. Ronny and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day as Ronny and Henry were going home after school, they saw some people fighting in the street corner. Ronny said excitedly, “Some people are fighting! Let’s go and have a look!” But Henry refused, “It’s none of our business. We’d better go home and don’t get close to them. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don’t want them to worry about me.”
“You are a coward, and afraid to go,” said Ronny, and off he ran to the spot with some other boys. Henry had to go home alone and didn't think about it anymore.
But Ronny thought Henry was a coward and told all the boys that. They laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn’t want to play with him.
Henry was sad but he wasn’t angry with Ronny for his rude behavior, because he had learned that true courage was shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys’ laughter and continued to stick to his thought and go to school and study as well. However, Ronny didn’t invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had his new friends who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had lots of fun.
注意:
1. 所续写的短文词数应为150左右;
2. 续写部分分为二段,每段的开头语已经为你写好;
Paragraph 1:
A few days later, something terrible happened to Ronny.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
At that moment, Henry happened to pass by.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Possible Version
A few days later, something terrible happened to Ronny. That afternoon after school, Ronny was bathing with some of his new friends in the river happily. Suddenly, he was stuck in the mud and couldn’t get out. He struggled hard but he was still trapped. He screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could. They were so scared and did not even try to help him.
At that moment, Henry happened to pass by. He heard the screams and ran to the river as soon as possible. Seeing Ronny was almost drowned, Henry took off his clothes immediately and jumped into the water without any hesitation. He reached Ronny just as he was sinking the last time. With great effort, and with much danger to himself, he brought Ronny to the shore in time. Henry was happy to help his friend, though he was extremely tired.

28. Animals are important to us mainly because ________.
A. they give us a source of food B. they are beautiful and lovely
C. they keep the balance of nature D. they give us a lot of pleasure
29. What has happened to the animals on the earth?
A. Only a few animals have disappeared.
B. Many kinds of animals have died out.
C. About 170 kinds of animals have disappeared forever.
D. All kinds of animals are in danger.
30. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. People care much about animals because they need them.
B. Once a certain kind of animals is gone forever, there will never be any more.
C. Killing all rats and mice may cause some problems.
D. People must not kill any animals.
31. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Every person will know the importance of protecting wild animals.
B. Animals in danger will not be killed any more.
C. The number of some animals in danger will increase.
D. Animals in danger will be kept away from people.

NUA is still testing the device and trying to improve features like speed and customization (定制) but they hope to make the suitcase available to customers in a year’s time.
A. A text-book. B. A website.
C. A biography. D. A poster.
