(2025·成都模拟)The news cycle is driving us to the edge of madness, so why not switch off the smartphones and pick up a book? We know you could use a laugh right now — and luckily, several thousands of you told us all about the books, stories and poems that make you laugh.
We took your votes and with the help of our panel (专家小组) of expert judges we created this list of 100 reads designed to make you laugh out loud.Want slice⁃of⁃life essays? Loopy poetry? Texts from famous literary figures? Scroll down — we’ve got it all.
As with all our reader polls, this is a curated (精心筹划的) list and not a straight⁃up popularity contest; unlike last year, you’ll see the books are grouped into categories rather than ranked from 1 to 100.
And, as always, there are a few things that didn’t make the list — surprisingly, Shakespeare didn’t get enough votes to make it to the semifinals. Then there were books that didn’t quite stand the test of time, or were so new we couldn’t tell whether they’d stand up.
Some of the authors on this list are incredibly popular, and you voted them in over and over again.Because space is limited, we try to hold each author to one spot on the list, but there are some exceptions such as Nora Ephron, who our judges thought was perfect.
And speaking of our judges, you will find a couple of their works on the list this year — we don’t let judges vote for their own works, but readers loved works such as Samantha Irby’s We Are Never Meeting in Real Life, so the panel agreed they should stay.
Laughter is the best medicine.Just click here and start reading!

(2025·苏锡常镇四市一模)I grew up hearing that it is better to give than to receive, and the older I get, the more I aim to take this message to heart.Nevertheless, here I am, in the midst of the holiday season, stressed out about gifts I have not yet purchased.
How does gift buying become an emotionally fraught chore (苦差事)? For a moment, it’s easy to question if it’s worth it.But science tells me that giving makes us feel good.
“The act of giving actually does improve your happiness,” says Michael Norton, a psychologist at Harvard Business School. He has published several studies on the effects of giving.
In one experiment that included about 700 people, the researchers randomly assigned participants to make either a purchase for themselves, or for a stranger.Afterwards, the participants reported how happy they felt.It turns out that giving to others led to a significant happiness boost, whereas spending on oneself didn’t move the needle.
“If you take 5 out of your pocket today, the science really does show that spending 5 on yourself doesn’t do much for you,” Norton says.“But spending that 5 on somebody else is more likely to increase your happiness.”
“Take scarves for example. If you buy one for yourself, it’s just another thing you don’t necessarily need. But if you buy a scarf for someone else, you’ve shown them that they’re important to you,” Norton says.Either way, it’s just a scarf.“But it can either be a throwaway object or something that enhances a relationship between two people,” he says.
So, there’s evidence that generosity promotes happiness, but the process of shopping, wrapping and schlepping (搬) gifts can be tiresome — or even extremely annoying considering all of our day⁃to⁃day demands and other holiday stressors.
Studies also show when people are given something they are more likely to give back.Reciprocity (互惠) is a foundation of good relationships and when we surround ourselves with generous people, we tend to feel the same.Feeling that spirit of giving and the connection it can bring is what the holidays are all about.
4.Why does the author mention his own experience in paragraph 1?
A.To make a prediction.
B.To introduce the topic.
C.To present a reason.
D.To clarify a concept.
5.How does Norton illustrate his opinion in paragraphs 5 and 6?
A.By listing data.
B.By giving examples.
C.By making comments.
D.By telling personal experiences.
6.Why is preparing a gift sometimes an emotionally fraught chore?
A.It’s difficult and boring.
B.It happens frequently.
C.It’s not valued by others.
D.It requires much effort.
7.What can we learn about giving gifts from the text?
A.It is not worth the effort.
B.It is a must to enhance a relationship.
C.It brings about emotional benefits.
D.It gains popularity during holidays.

(2025·衡阳模拟)Cheerfulness is a powerful way to deal with a world that will always be tough and unjust in one way or another. It is a sign of strength in the face of difficulties.Different from fear, joy, or anger, cheerfulness isn’t something that overcomes you. 8 As such, you can include it into your life once you make the right mental switch. Here are four ways to do so.
Acknowledge the difficulties.
Cheerfulness is an honest emotion because you’re not hiding from reality. 9 Instead, it’s extremely important to be honest with yourself about the problems you’re facing.Only by first acknowledging that things are tough will you be able to find ways to cope.
Don’t focus on the negative.
Whether in your personal life or in society, it’s easy to focus on what’s going wrong. But whatever you focus on, it grows. If you decide to focus on what’s going wrong, those problems will grow in your mind until they consume you. 10
Be grateful for what you have.
11 Usually, they’re the things we take for granted until they’re no longer there, such as good health, a loving family, or even something as simple as a beautiful sunrise.Being grateful will shift your perspective and make it easier to see the silver linings of your problems.
12
No cheerfulness without laughter. So you can watch comedies, browse memes, or joke around with friends.Laughter strengthens your immune system, boosts your mood, makes you feel less pain, and protects you from stress.Laughter is cathartic (精神宣泄的) and infectious.Laugh and brighten the room.
A.Find your sense of humour.
B.Deal with difficulties seriously.
C.Focus on the good things you have.
D.To a large degree, cheerfulness is a choice.
E.You’re not covering your eyes and looking away.
F.Acknowledge the problems, but don’t give them too much attention.
G.Being cheerful will make you see the world and your own life in a different way.

(2025·福建统考)My plan to learn to play the cello (大提琴) was a healthy choice. So I took the next innocent step of going to a shop that sells and rents string instruments, especially violins, violas, and cellos. The place was a hole⁃in⁃the⁃wall, up a steep flight of stairs.Instruments left a narrow path to the counter where a woman with grey hair and warm eyes greeted me.Since I couldn’t form a question about what I wanted, I just stood there exploring the scene, which felt immensely pleasurable.
I rented a cello, a bow, and a case to hold them. What attracted me to the cello was its enormous size and its soft, smooth, and memorable sounds. It’s an instrument made of beautifully polished wood that I could wrap my arms around and feel its powerful vibrations when the strings were played. That was a good starting point for me.The only problem was that I didn’t know how to play it.
There’s a popular belief that the cello is a particularly difficult instrument to learn.Another is the admonition, “Don’t bother if you are a beginner over age 10!” Well, I was 70, and what others thought no longer influenced me.And besides, I thought of the words of Dr.Cohen, who suggested that learning causes physical changes in the brain.
So I found a teacher who had respect for older adult beginners and I practiced diligently, daily for years, and sometimes disheartened, but I kept up.I’m happy to report that now, more than a decade later, I can hold my own in a string trio and two quartets (two violins, a viola, and me, the female cello) and even a senior community band.Of course, I’ll never sound like a world⁃class cellist but you could recognize a Mozart piece if you heard me play it.And, more importantly, I don’t need to please anyone but myself.
Whether it’s a pleasurable pastime or a new career, the starting point is the same: wonder, curiosity, determination, and the desire to keep your brain sharp.

No doubt there are ups and downs in life.Whatever the situation is, you shouldn’t lose your joy of life.Life is for a limited time only and no one knows how long he/she will live, so why do you waste your time in worrying about the things that are beyond your control? Be happy, and enjoy your life unconditionally.
You enjoy good days but you also need to learn how to enjoy bad days, even enjoy your pain.In 2016 I suffered a sudden heart attack. My colleagues called an ambulance and I was taken to hospital with much pain in my chest. Before reaching the hospital, I was totally exhausted with pain and was going to lose control of my emotions. Then the doctor in the ambulance said, “Don’t worry; you are in safe hands.” His words took away all my pain because I started realizing that it was no time to worry about pain and it was time to be happy that my life was safe.At that time, I learnt an important lesson that in pain there is a hidden joy and we must see the bright side and enjoy pain.
You not only enjoy success but you also need to learn to enjoy failure.Celebrating failure will raise your morale and make you more powerful and determined to achieve success. We all make mistakes in life, but only the courageous people laugh at their mistakes and then they reach success without any spiritual burden.A person who learns from mistakes and knows how to turn the bad situation into his/her favor is the most intelligent person and really enjoys his/her life.

(2025·佳木斯一模)I’m a grandma in my 60s.In the spring of 2020, like the rest of the world, I spent a lot of time staring at a screen.I discovered that onscreen offerings were truly endless. From one online video I learned how to plant my own vegetable garden.Someone else shared poetry from Robert Frost, wise sayings from Confucius, and a smattering (一知半解) of other philosophical viewpoints, all of which helped me through some dark days that spring.Down the rabbit hole I went, scrolling for hours and hours, watching other people living their lives and giving me advice on how to live mine.
As the months rolled by, online videos turned my attention away from the hard reality of what was going on in the world.I subscribed to several channels and waited anxiously for new weekly offerings.I watched people reading poetry or painting by streams or looking out windows into snowy landscapes.I found all this calming.Such lovely scenery, such beautiful background music, such pretty clothes they were wearing!
At some point though, I got upset by these artistic and seemingly perfect lives.Who is filming them? I wondered.Do they rehearse or just act on the spot? Isn’t it cold, stepping through snowbanks in dresses? The questions kept bothering me while forcing comparisons to my own somewhat more ordinary existence.I wanted to walk in a flowing dress through hilly green field filled with wildflowers! Instead, I was marching through my neighborhood’s city streets in mom jeans.
In a moment of insight, I realized that I had a full and happy life, which although it wouldn’t win awards for perfection onscreen, suited me perfectly.I put my phone away and started paying attention to my own life instead of watching other people live theirs.I still like checking in once in a while.Online videos can be a rich source of entertainment and inspiration, but I’ve limited my exposure.I am content with the knowledge that my addiction to life onscreen has been replaced by life itself.

(2025·湖北模拟)Playing with my 5⁃year⁃old child, I sometimes wonder: Why are her made⁃up games so terribly boring? In Learning to Imagine, psychologist Andrew Shtulman thinks it untrue that kids are uncontrolled wellsprings of imagination. On the contrary, the more we learn, the more imaginative we can become, and learning will not hold back imaginative ideas.Kids, he argues, fail to imagine obvious possibilities.
To gather evidence for this argument, Shtulman explores mechanisms (机制) for expanding imagination.Without support of others or new tools and technologies, people may reject reasonable ideas out of hand, he maintains.Lord Kelvin, for instance, famously denied the possibility of “heavier⁃than⁃air flying machines” less than 10 years before the Wright brothers created one.Abstract principles, like those so influential in science and ethics (伦理学), also boost imagination. Finally, imagination grows through exploring alternative models of the world, as in plays, fiction and so on.Across all of these examples, expanding imagination requires building closely on what people already know.
Perhaps counterintuitively (反直觉地), kids relate best to realistic stories. For instance, some earliest cartoons were disorganized and strange.Only when the cartoons became “reasonably impossible” did they gain mass appeal. Many fictional worlds, from Middle Earth to Hogwarts, rely on reasonable impossibility.
Shtulman cleverly and precisely sails this vast, attractive sea.Learning to Imagine never drags or makes me get stuck on professional words.I wish, however, that there had been more focus on what these findings mean.If education does not hinder imagination, how do we develop it? Shtulman advises us to “engage with, and learn from the collective knowledge of other people”.AI programs like GPT take that approach, educating themselves on massive data sets.
“Be like GPT” is not the most heartening message. But while humans cannot learn large amounts of data quickly and easily like AI, human imagination is shared and cooperative. That, at least, is something all of us — 5⁃year⁃olds and their dads alike — have over the chatbots.
5.What’s the misunderstanding about imagination according to Shtulman?
A.It’s an inborn ability.
B.It helps broaden the mind.
C.Children are full of it.
D.Inventions are based on it.
6.What does expanding imagination depend on?
A.Known information.
B.Realistic principles.
C.Gradual exploration.
D.Supportable arguments.
7.What does the underlined word “hinder” mean in paragraph 4?
A.Improve. B.Prevent.
C.Stress. D.Dismiss.
8.What is the type of the text?
A.A research report. B.A personal diary.

Then came her senior year. She saw documents about scholarships on the school website when visiting it one day.According to the statement, she would be considered for scholarships; however, school activities, especially sports, could often mean the difference between receiving an award and losing out.She continued to read other notices and found an ad from the football team, which stated that the football manager was seeking for an assistant, who would take on ancillary (辅助的) services like taking charge of the team’s supplies, communication and security.
