It was a sunny afternoon, and students gathered at the school's sports field for an exciting running race. I stood at the starting line, my heart racing with anticipation. The referee's whistle sounded loud, signaling the start of the race. The competition was tough, but I remained focused. As I crossed the finish line, a mix of exhaustion and a sense of accomplishment washed over me and my teammates rushed to congratulate me.

On our way to the starting line, we were wondering if anybody else would show up despite the cancellation. To our surprise, there were still spectators along the course, and neighbors gathered outside of their houses handing out bottles of water as they watched runners go by. With hot air constantly hitting us, bystanders passed me one icecold sponge and a wet rag to cool my body down. Somewhere around half of the route, I was also offered a handful of orange slices and a banana from a stranger on the side of the road but I politely declined. Their inspiration and kindness were what kept me running all the way forward.
The last 8 kilometers of the Twin Cities Marathon route are largely uphill. By that point in the race, my thighs felt like jells and my leg muscles were rubber bands. The finish line sat at the bottom of the hill. No finish banner this time, I could still see dozens of supporters cheering runners home. I kept glancing at my watch, counting down the meters until it ticked to “42.2” kilometers. I called out “I'm done” to Louisa, who had been delivering muchneeded encouragement along the way. I let out a dry sob and gave hugs to people around. Despite the race getting canceled, it felt just like a real victory.

Then we took the gift upstairs to Grandma's room.We tiptoed in, trying not to disturb her, but her eyes lit up as soon as she saw the wrapped photo album in our hands.“What's this?” she asked. We handed her the gift, and as she flipped through the pages, her face broke into a wide smile.“Oh, this is the best gift ever,” she exclaimed.“Thank you, my darlings. This means so much to me.” We sat with her, sharing stories about the day and watching her delight as she revisited the zoo through our pictures. It was a moment of pure happiness, and we knew that even though she wasn't physically with us at the zoo, she was very much a part of our adventure.

Digital Reading
Nowadays, digital reading is increasingly popular. It provides great convenience, allowing access to countless books on a single device. However, one coin has its two sides.
The lack of print books takes away the unique experience in reading.Spending too much time on the screen will affect readers' eyesight and distract their mind.In my opinion, we should strengthen selfcontrol on digital reading and occasionally add traditional print books into our reading to strike a balance.Besides, taking regular breaks is of great importance to our eyes.By enjoying the benefits and reducing the negative impact, we can fully enjoy digital reading.

The children didn't leave but stayed nearby, whispering something.Curious, Jack's mother slowly approached and overheard their conversation.“He's so brave, selling things on the street like that,” said one of the boys.“Yeah, and he's so polite too.I feel bad for laughing at him before,” added another girl.Jack's mother felt her heart swell with pride. She realized that Jack's differences were not his weaknesses; they were his strengths. His resilience and courage in the face of adversity had inspired these children to see him in a new light. As she watched Jack continue to sell his tissues with the help of his newfound friends, she knew that he had found a place where he belonged, a place where he was accepted and loved for who he was.

Dear editor,
I am Li Hua, a high school student. Here I am writing to respond to your article about establishing a nature reserve by the river.
I don't think it will be welcomed by young people.Although a nature reserve can be beneficial in providing habitats for wild animals and plants and protecting our environment, it should be acknowledged that a city with such a large population cannot afford to spare a vast space to function simply as a nature reserve.
A recreational wetland park, I believe, is an alternative. In this park, for one thing, the wildlife, especially those birds, can seek shelters and the water quality can be improved. For another, the citizens, especially the teenagers, not only can appreciate the natural ecology but also enjoy various activities such as biking, hiking and camping.
I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours,
Li Hua

We spent a couple of hours on the top, and decided to turn back.As the fog began to lift slightly, we caught glimpses of the breathtaking landscape that had been hidden from us.The sight of the rugged terrain and the distant peaks, even partially obscured, was more than I could have imagined. The reality of the mountains was far more profound and aweinspiring than any TV show could convey. It was a moment of realization that the world was much bigger and more magnificent than the confines of my hometown.
Seeing all this scenery with my own eyes was truly an eyeopening experience for me.It was a stark contrast to the comfort of my home and the familiarity of my daily routine. The fresh air, the sounds of nature, and the challenge of the climb all contributed to a sense of adventure and discovery that I had never felt before. It was then that I understood the difference between experiencing something through a screen and immersing oneself in it.The disappointment of the foggy view was replaced by the satisfaction of having stepped out of my comfort zone and into the unknown. This trip was not just a physical journey; it was a personal one that changed my perspective on life and the world around me.

At the park, Kathleen pointed to a bench with a napping old woman and said, “Here, draw her shoes repeatedly.” Eagerly, I settled onto a nearby bench, my sketchpad resting on my lap and pencil ready to capture the old woman's shoes. With every pencil stroke, I focused on every detail I would have overlooked before — the worn leather, the frayed laces and the faded color. As I sketched, it felt like I was uncovering stories of a life welllived, the rest of the world fading into the background. Kathleen, watching over my shoulder, offered tips and new angles to consider. The afternoon sun began to set, casting golden light over my paper, as Kathleen and I shared thoughts about our creations, our laughter mingling with the soft rustle of leaves.
The next day was the class feedback session. As I presented my drawings, anticipation curled in my heart. Initially, a hush fell over the room, everyone's attention, every pair of eyes fixed on the work I had poured my heart into. The teacher, surprised, nodded approvingly after studying my pieces. Soon the air buzzed with my classmates' discussion, describing my work as “sensitive”, “accurate” and “beautifully stylized”. Each word warmed my heart. Glancing over at Kathleen, I caught her eye, and she offered me a wink and a loving smile. At that moment, I knew I had drawn an illustration to be proud of, one that touched something universally human and one reflecting the journey Kathleen and I shared — a journey of art, friendship, and mutual appreciation.

The effects of class size on learning
Recently, a survey on the effects of class size on learning was conducted in our school.Opinions are divided among students.
As is shown in the pie chart, 45 percent believe smaller classes are beneficial to learning. However, 39 percent hold the view that bigger classes are better.Still, 16% have ambiguous thoughts yet.Personally, I believe smaller classes have advantages over bigger classes.First of all, students from smaller classes are more engaged in learning activities. They experience less distraction from others and spend more time learning. In addition, teachers can pay more attention to the students and provide individual help in smaller classes.
In conclusion, whether the class size is small or big, we students should behave well in class and devote ourselves to studying for a bright future.

We were discussing what to do next when the phone rang. It was Miss Jones, asking them to come to school the next day.
Miss Jones had just accepted my parents' advice when Steven came. His face was red with shame and regret. Looking down, he confessed his mistake. He had carelessly put the money in a hidden part of his backpack and just found it after the search. He apologised sincerely, looking straight at me and expressing deep regret for the pain he had caused. Miss Jones apologised to me for the school's hasty judgment. My parents thanked her. “Tiny fairies, Mike!” she said, pressing her forehead against the window.“Everywhere!” They weren't fairies, of course. But the winking lights really existed and were, in my opinion, better than the fairies.I wanted to tell Meg about these incredible insects that flashed in the dark, signaling to each other. Then I looked down into Meg's shining eyes, and I decided she could learn about fireflies some other time.Meg was so absorbed in the breathtaking scene that she completely forgot her homesickness and soon fell asleep against my shoulder.I guessed it turned out that I could handle everything — with a little help from the magical fairies.

根据第一段中“However, the book's repeated suggestion that digital technologies are rewiring our children's brains and causing the epidemic of mental illness is unsupported by science.”
根据最后一段中“Unfortunately, our time is being spent telling stories that are unsupported by research and that do little to support young people who need, and deserve, more.”
Suddenly, an idea formed in my mind. Why not put Mr Nibbles on the poster? I eagerly sketched out a design featuring Mr Nibbles in a playful pose, promoting the joy of pet adoption: “Want a pet to play with? Go and get one in the local animal shelter.” I admired my work with great satisfaction. The next afternoon, Ollie came over with his notebook. His design was centered on his parrot, Blue, who was singing beautifully “Oh! Be our hero! Give shelter pets a chance to be loved!” We exchanged a smile and engaged in a discussion about the final draft of the poster.
We decided to make both Mr Nibbles and Blue the stars of the poster.Combining my playful hamster and Ollie's melodious parrot, we created a vibrant and eyecatching design. After adding the final touches, we proudly presented our final creation to Mr Goldberg. His face lit up as he praised the creativity and heartfelt message behind our design.A couple of months later, Mr Goldberg shared the exciting news that lots of people had come in after seeing the posters. And some of them decided to donate or adopt! We hadn't expected our poster would cause such a sensation, but we did know our small bit of help would create a meaningful ripple.
