A boy who has been climbing the equivalent (等量) of Mount Qomolangma in aid of a children’s hospice (救济院) is about to reach his fundraising goal of £29,031. Six-year-old Oscar, from Lancaster, has climbed 10 of the UK’s highest mountains to help Chorley’s Derian House. He said he needed two more to match Mount Qomolangma’s 29,031 feet height.
Oscar started his challenge on October 9, 2022, and Ingleborough in the Yorkshire Dales was the first mountain to be chosen. He said that the hardest climb so far had been Cairn Gorm in the Scottish Highlands because the snow was so deep.
Oscar took on the challenge in the hope of raising enough money to send 29 children with life-limiting illnesses on holiday. “I wanted to be the youngest person to climb Mount Qomolangma and I have climbed 10 out of 12 mountains. When I get older, I want to climb the real Mount Qomolangma,” Oscar said.
“It was amazing what a child’s dream can achieve. We’re speechless and couldn’t be prouder. We were grateful to everyone that supported us along Oscar’s journey,” Oscar’s father Matt wrote on the social media.
Oscar and his family hoped to make their final climb on Ben Nevis in Scotland on May 29, 2023. The climb would mark not only the completion of Oscar’s challenge, but also the 70th anniversary of the first successful ascent (攀登) of Mount Qomolangma by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.
“For every foot he climbed, our children would get a pound to achieve their dreams. The total £29,031 raised by Oscar would help support the work of the hospice, which provides end-of-life care to more than 400 children across the northwest of England,” said Karen Edwards, a senior official of Derian House.
“The six-year-old was an unbelievable little boy who had truly gone to great heights. How many six-year-olds could say that they have climbed the height of Mount Qomolangma?” Karen added.
4. What has happened to Oscar according to the text?
A. He has achieved his aim of fundraising.
B. He has climbed 10 mountains in the UK.

5. Which mountain has challenged Oscar the most?
A. Ingleborough. B. Ben Nevis. C. Mount Qomolangma. D. Cairn Gorm.
6. What can we infer about Oscar?
A. He grew up in a low-income family.
B. He raised one pound for every foot he climbed.
C. He hesitated to climb the real Mount Qomolangma.
D. He challenged Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.
7. Which can best describe the feeling of Karen Edwards?
A. Surprised. B. Confused. C. Disappointed. D. Relieved.

This summer, California faced extreme heat, with temperatures going up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit in many areas. July 2024 was recorded as the hottest month in the state’s history, with Death Valley hitting 129 degrees Fahrenheit.
Stifling (窒息的) heat returns to several parts of the state this week, and the National Weather Service (NWS) issued warnings or advisories for regions including San Francisco, San Diego, and Los Angeles. Parts of California are also under warnings from the Las Vegas and Phoenix offices.
In San Francisco, NWS meteorologist Dalton Behringer noted that while heat waves are common for this time of year, the present temperatures are unusually high. “It’s not uncommon to see these types of warm events like this, but temperatures are expected to be 20 to 30 degrees above average in some areas”, he explained.
The advisories warn the locals about “dangerously hot conditions”, especially for vulnerable (易受伤害的) groups such as young children, the elderly, and those without air conditioning. The Los Angeles NWS office suggests people stay hydrated (含水的), remain indoors, and check on neighbors. Leaving children or pets in cars is particularly dangerous, as the temperatures inside can become lethal in minutes.
In Death Valley, temperatures are expected to reach 115 degrees Fahrenheit. The NWS in Las Vegas warns that extreme heat can lead to serious health issues, particularly as the summer draws to a close. Meteorologists in San Francisco have warned that the ongoing heat could have bad effects on public health and local businesses. They recommend limiting outdoor activities due to the high risk of heat-related illnesses.
Experts are also worried that this autumn heat wave could worsen wildfire conditions, as dry weather has already created fire risks across California. The Line Fire in San Bernardino County, which started in early September, has already burned over 44,000 acres. While a cool-down is expected by the end of the week, strong winds could worsen fire conditions.

C. The economic influence of summer heat. D. Activities to enjoy during hot weather.
11. Where can the text be found?
A. In a newspaper. B. In a guidebook.
C. In a science magazine. D. In a website.

In a world filled with constant noise, the concept of silence holds remarkable benefits for both our mental and physical well-being.
Silence can have a calming effect on our minds. The absence of noise gives the brain more time to process information and therefore provides much-needed mental clearness. Reduced background noise can enhance focus and deepen our connection to our emotions and thoughts according to Psych Central article The hidden benefits of silence. There have been a variety of studies proving that silence can reduce stress levels. Silence achieves this by lowering cortisol (皮质醇) and adrenaline (肾上腺素), which encourages mindfulness, promotes self-awareness, and allows the brain to “reset” and gives a peaceful break from busy lives.
Physically, silence also plays a positive role. A 2013 study found that silence can increase the number of cells in the hippocampus (海马体) of the brain. Researchers studied mice and found that just two hours of silence a day contributed to cell development. Another study into the effects of music and silence conducted by the National Institutes of Health, which interspersed different musical styles with a period of two-minute silence, discovered that when this silence was introduced, the participants’ breathing frequency, heart rate, and blood pressure all decreased to below initial levels.
While silence has proven mental and physical benefits, it can also make a difference in conversation. Silence in conversation enables us to listen more attentively, giving others the opportunity to share what they need to. This not only makes us better conversational partners but also helps nurture relationships. It helps us to listen and respond in a calm and confident manner.
So, it’s time to turn down the noise and embrace some silent peace.
12. According to the passage, how does silence affect the brain?
A. It contributes to a clear state of mind.
B. It helps the brain to “reset” on a regular basis.
C. It reduces the number of cells in the hippocampus.
D. It makes for the production of cortisol and adrenaline.
13. What did the study by the National Institutes of Health find?
A. Participants’ physical signs returned to normal.
B Silence led to a decrease in participants’ physical signs.
C. Silence kept participants’ breathing frequency on the rise.
D. Musical styles had little impact on participants’ physical signs.
14 What does the underlined word “interspersed” mean?
A. Separated. B. Compared. C. Removed. D. Mixed.
15. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The negative impacts of noise on our lives.
B. How to find more silence in a noisy world.
C. The benefits of silence for our well-being.
D. The significance of combining silence and music.

Dave was in his car driving home. Work had been longer today than most days. His wife was expecting him home soon for dinner but he knew he would be late. Up ahead on the road there was a car that was pulled off to the side of the road. A gentleman in decent office clothing was standing at the tire (轮胎), looking quite confused.
“I should stop and help,” Dave thought. “But I’m already late... Maybe he can just call the policemen or a friend to come to get him.”
It was late November and in the mountains of Virginia it-was dark and cold. Dave already felt the guilt (内疚) of not stopping to help. “It’s cold... cell phone service is weak in these areas... what if he decided to walk... he can’t defend himself if an animal comes out of the woods.”
Led by guilt, Dave pulled in front of the broken down car and shut off his engine. “Need some help?” Dave yelled out. Now walking past the headlights he found a medium height older man, somewhere in his 60’s. “I have a flat tire. I’m a little ashamed to say I don’t know how to put on my spare tire.” Dave nodded. He put his hands in his jacket. “No worries. I’ll have you fixed up in no time. I own the car repair shop in town.”
Dave walked to the trunk of the car and took out the spare tire and tools. He took off the flat tire and placed the new one on quickly. “Could I give you some cash?” asked the old man. “No, I can’t take any cash. It was my pleasure to help. Now just promise me you will go straight home.” The old man laughed, “okay, fair deal. I promise, I’ll go straight home.” They shook hands and Dave turned around and started walking back towards his truck.
“This cold air...” he thought to himself, finding himself unwell. Dave felt his chest (胸部) tightening. He felt short of breath. He needed to sit down. He put his hand on his chest. He had to stop. The pain coming from his chest was so sharp. He felt breathless. Then his mind went blank.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请在答题卡的相应位置作答。

In Death Valley temperatures are expected to reach 115 degrees Fahrenheit.

B. Silence led to a decrease in participants’ physical signs.
C. Silence kept participants’ breathing frequency on the rise.
D. Musical styles had little impact on participants’ physical signs.
14. What does the underlined word “interspersed” mean?
A. Separated. B. Compared. C. Removed. D. Mixed.
15. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The negative impacts of noise on our lives.
B. How to find more silence in a noisy world.
C. The benefits of silence for our well-being.
D. The significance of combining silence and music.
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. D 15. C

第二节 读后续写 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Paragraph two:
“You had a heart attack,” said the old man, “and I actually am a heart doctor.”

【答案】
A few hours later, Dave came to himself, quickly realizing he was in the hospital. The white walls and the smell of medicine surrounded him, and a nurse explained that he had been brought in by an old man. Just then, the old man walked into the room, with his face showing relief. Dave remembered helping him with a flat tire on the road, but now felt confused about how he ended up here. The old man explained that after Dave left, he saw him collapse by his truck and immediately called for an ambulance.
“You had a heart attack,” said the old man, “and I actually am a heart doctor.” Dave was shocked to hear this. The old man continued that when he found Dave unconscious, his medical training kicked in. He performed first aid and kept Dave stable until the ambulance arrived. “Your kindness in stopping to help me might have saved your own life,” the old man said. Dave felt a rush of gratitude. It was then that he realized that small acts of help can create unexpected connections and make a big difference in others’ lives.
