My Favourite Travel Books
Matthew Karsten has been travelling around the world for nine years now, and it all started after he was inspired by reading some useful travel books. Here is his personal list of the best reads.
Travels with a Donkey (驴) in the Cévennes
Robert Louis Stevenson
It is one of the first travel books I have read, which takes me on a walking journey with Robert and his donkey Mosestine across a mountainous region of France. I get to feel what travelling through the 1870s' Europe was like. Robert and his donkey don't get along well at first, but they finally learn to become travel partners.
Worldwalk
Steven M. Newman
Worldwalk is the story of newspaper writer Steven M. Newman who packed his bag at the age of 28 to start a four-year-long journey around the world on foot. He walked his way across 22 countries in five heartfelt stories of the people he met along the way, as well as wild adventures. A lesson of hope and love is told through the exciting backpacking.
On the Road
Jack Kerouac
On the Road is a classic American travel book. The story, which is based on Kerouac himself, tells us about Dean Moriarty's cross-country journey across America in the 1940s. A great read for those who would like to escape the real world for a while and just go where the wind blows them.
The Cat Who Went to Paris
Peter Gethers

Living in Iowa and trying to become a photographer specialising in landscape(风景) can be quite a challenge, mainly because the corn state lacks geographical variation(地理变化).
Although landscapes in the Midwest tend to be quite similar, either farm fields or highways, sometimes I find distinctive character in the hills or lakes. To make some of my landscape shots, I have travelled up to four hours away to shoot within 10-minute time frame(一段时间). I tend to
travel with a few of my friends to state parks or to the countryside to go on adventures and take photos along the way.
Being at the right place at the right time is decisive in any style of photography. I often leave early to seek the right destinations so I can set up early to avoid missing the moment I am attempting to photograph. I have missed plenty of beautiful sunsets/sunrises due to being on the spot only five minutes before the best moment.
One time my friends and I drove three hours to Devil's Lake, Wisconsin, to climb the purple quartz (石英) rock around the lake. After
we found a crazy-looking road that hung over a bunch of rocks, we decided to photograph the scene at sunset. The position enabled us to look over the lake with the sunset in the background. We managed to leave this spot to climb higher because of the spare time until sunset. However, we did not mark the route(路线) so we ended up almost missing the sunset entirely. Once we found the place, it was stressful getting lights and cameras set up in the limited time. Still, looking back on the photos, they are some of my best shots though they could have been so much better if I would have been prepared and managed my time wisely.
( )24.How does the author deal with the challenge as a landscape photographer in the Midwest?
A.By teaming up with other photographers.
B.By shooting in the countryside or state parks.
C.By studying the geographical conditions.
D.By creating settings in the corn fields.
B
( )25.What is the key to successful landscape photography according to the author?
A.Proper time management.
B.Good shooting techniques.
C.Adventurous spirit.
D.Distinctive styles.
A
( )26.What can we infer from the author's trip with friends to Devil's Lake?
A.They went crazy with the purple quartz rock.
B.They felt stressed while waiting for the sunset.
C.They reached the shooting spot later than expected.
D.They had problems with their equipment.
C
( )27.How does the author find his photos taken at Devil's Lake?
A.Amusing. B.Satisfying.
C.Encouraging. D.Comforting.
B
根据第二段最后两句“To make some of my landscape shots, I have travelled up to four hours away to shoot within 10-minute time frame(一段时间). I tend to travel with a few of my friends to state parks or to the countryside to go on adventures and take photos along the way.(为了拍摄我的一些风景照片,我经常要走四个小时的路,在10分钟内进行拍摄。我倾向于和我的一些朋友一起去州立公园或乡村冒险,沿途拍照。)”可知,作者在乡村或州立公园拍摄来应对挑战。故选B。
25.A 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Being at the right place at the right time is decisive in any style of photography.(在任何摄影风格中,在正确的时间出现在正确的地点都是决定性的。)”以及最后一段中的“Still, looking back on the photos, they are some of my best shots though they could have been so much better if I would have been prepared and managed my time wisely.(尽管如此,现在回想起这些照片,它们是我最好的一些照片,尽管如果我能明智地准备和管理我的时间,它们本可以拍得更好。)” 故选A。
根据最后一段中“We managed to leave this spot to climb higher because of the spare time until sunset. However, we did not mark the route(路线) so we ended up almost missing the sunset entirely. Once we found the place, it was stressful getting lights and cameras set up in the limited time.(我们设法离开这个地方,爬到更高处,因为到日落还有空闲时间。然而,我们没有在路线上做标记,所以我们最终几乎完全错过了日落。当我们找到了这个地方的时候,在有限的时间内调试灯和摄像机是很紧张的。)”可推断出,他们到达拍摄地点比预期的更晚。故选C。
27.B 推理判断题。根据最后一段最后一句“Still, looking back on the photos, they are some of my best shots though they could have been so much better if I would have been prepared and managed my time wisely.(尽管如此,现在回想起这些照片,它们是我最好的一些照片,尽管如果我能明智地准备和管理我的时间,它们本可以拍得更好。)”

One morning soon, you'll get on your bike and ride from one end of America to the other, because the Great American Rail-Trail(步道) is 53% complete, making a cross-country bike ride closer to a reality.
The idea of a bike trail made up of scenic paths, trails and former rail lines from Washington D.C. to Washington State has been 30 years in the making. Now, with more than 50% of the trail up and running, the project, run by the Rails to Trails in cooperation with local authorities(当地政府), is gaining steam, with hundreds of miles of trails in development now.
Last August, Ryan Gardill and a workmate biked 350 miles from Pittsburgh to Washington D.C. Their travels took them through some beautiful and historical parts of the American East.“The trail connected me to our unforgettable history. Though not entirely complete, the rail trail has drawn people of all types due to its beautiful scenery along the way. Most of the towns on the trail were once important to America.”
The major goal of the trail is to provide the American public with the opportunity to explore their beautiful country, without getting in their cars. A secondary goal is to make the small towns and cities prosperous
(繁荣的) again, according to National Geographic.
One of these is Muncie, Indiana, a city located on a former rail system and a part of the Great American Rail-Trail. The city is already seeing the economic benefits of the trail. “A large majority of our customers are locals, but the Rail-Trail could help grow tourism,” said Jason Allardt, owner of the historic Kirk's Bike Shop.
This is the hope for numerous once-prosperous towns and cities all throughout America, though it may take nearly 20 years to get the entire trail up and running.
( )28.What can we know about the Great American Rail-Trail?
A.It's fit for trains.
B.It's been finished already.
C.It's a long and complex project.
D.It's run by the American government.
C
( )29.Why do people enjoy the trail?
A.Because it's a bike trail with good scenery.
B.Because it's a rail line across the country.
C.Because it offers adventurous paths.
D.Because its construction lasts 30 years.
A
( )30.What can be inferred about the towns and cities along the trail?
A.They mainly lie in the mountains.
B.They have been popular tourist destinations.
C.They're no longer prosperous towns or cities in America.
D.They are the main towns and cities along the U.S. railway.
C
( )31.What effects does the trail have on Muncie?
A.It recovers its rail system.
B.It has made it a popular city.
C.It brings many bike shops.
D.It helps the local economy.
D
根据第二段“The idea of a bike trail made up of scenic paths, trails and former rail lines from Washington D.C. to Washington State has been 30 years in the making. Now, with more than 50% of the trail up and running, the project, run by the Rails to Trails in cooperation with local authorities(当地政府), is gaining steam, with hundreds of miles of trails in development now.(从华盛顿市到华盛顿州,
根据第二段中的“The idea of a bike trail made up of scenic paths, trails and former rail lines from Washington D.C. to Washington State has been 30 years in the making.(从华盛顿市到华盛顿州,一条由风景优美的小路、步道和以前的铁路线组成的自行车道的想
以及第三段中的“Though not entirely complete, the rail trail has drawn people of all types due to its beautiful scenery along the way.(虽然这条路线还没有完全完工,但沿途的美景吸引了形形色色的人。)” 故选A。
根据第三段中的“‘The trail connected me to our unforgettable history.Though not entirely complete, the rail trail has drawn people of all types due to its beautiful scenery along the way. Most
of the towns on the trail were once important to America.’(‘这条步道把我和我们的历史联系在一起。 以及第四段中的“A secondary goal is to make the small towns and cities prosperous(繁荣的) again(第二个目标是使小城镇和城市再次繁荣起来)”推知,沿途的城市和小镇以前是美国繁荣的城镇,但现在不是了。
根据第五段“One of these is Muncie, Indiana, a city located on a former rail system and a part of the Great American Rail-
Trail. The city is already seeing the economic benefits of the trail.‘A large majority of our customers are locals, but the Rail-Trail could help grow tourism,’said Jason Allardt, owner of the historic Kirk's Bike Shop.(其中之一是印第安纳州的曼希市,这座城市位于以前的铁路系统上,是Great American Rail-Trail的一部分。

The Greek historian Herodotus is said to have made one of the earliest lists of Seven Wonders of the World. These were man-made structures, including the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. More recent times saw natural alternatives(可供选择的事物) to these wonders of classical architecture: waterfalls, mountains, canyons, reefs. Dramatic landscapes, features and wildlife, and the pleasure and excitement they offer to visitors, are basics of tourism.
As environmental awareness has risen, attitudes to such sightseeing
have changed. Yes, it is exciting to visit remote forests or spot rare species. But travelling to distant destinations is carbon-intensive (碳密集的) when flights or long road journeys are involved, and protection can be made more difficult as well as assisted by sightseers. There is a balance to be struck, and some governments and businesses around the world try to increase the benefits while reducing the harm. Colombia, for example, recently introduced laws aimed at promoting sustainable(可持续的) tourism. Based on this, its economy got prosperous as well as the tourism.
Most of us understand better than ever that there are costs as well as
benefits associated with exploring. One project, “The Jump”, is to “holiday local”, taking short flights once every 3 years and long flights very rarely. Fortunately, the UK's 15 national parks, 86 areas of outstanding natural beauty, and countless other landscapes that are without formal status(地位), but still beloved, mean that there is no shortage of special places for domestic(国内的) nature tourists to visit, while a lot of European beauty spots are accessible by rail.
One recent survey found that Windsor Great Park and Kew have become Britain's most popular attractions. Visitor numbers at Wildlife
Trusts are high, with waiting lists for beaver-spotting. Some companies that formerly ran foreign trips have adapted to the pandemic by taking people to watch dolphins and other marine life(海洋生物) off British coasts instead.
As we face an environmental emergency that grows ever more dangerous, it is important to develop appreciation for nature that surrounds us. In a small way, holiday outings to watch dragonflies, kingfishers or seals, or be surrounded by trees that are coming into leaf, could help us to focus on what matters.
( )32.Why are the lists of Seven Wonders of the World mentioned?
A.To bring natural wonders into focus.
B.To show changes in architectural styles.
C.To reveal the rising popularity of tourism.
D.To compare historic and modern structures.
A
( )33.What did Colombia recently do?
A.It made efforts to protect rare species.
B.It banned sightseers from going to remote forests.
C.It introduced laws to increase the income of tourism.
D.It tried to make its tourism develop healthily and stably.
D
( )34.What is the author's attitude to the goal of “The Jump”?
A.Relaxed. B.Doubtful. C.Critical. D.Favourable.
( )35.What can be the best title for this passage?
A.Nature Tourism: “Travel Local”
B.Discovery of European Beauty Spots
C.International Tourism: Wait Before Setting Out
D.Sightseeing Leads to Environmental Emergency
D
A
根据第一段“The Greek historian Herodotus is said to have made one of the earliest lists of Seven Wonders of the World. These were man-made structures, including the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. More recent times saw natural alternatives(可供选择的事物) to these wonders of classical architecture: waterfalls, mountains, canyons, reefs. Dramatic landscapes, features and wildlife, and the pleasure and
excitement they offer to visitors, are basics oftourism.(据说希腊历史学家希罗多德列出了早期世界七大奇迹中的其中一个名单。 故选A。
根据第二段最后三句“There is a balance to be struck, and some governments and businesses around the world try to increase the benefits while reducing the harm. Colombia, for example,
recently introduced laws aimed at promoting sustainable(可持续的) tourism. Based on this, its economy got prosperous as well as the tourism.(需要取得平衡,世界各地的一些政府和企业试图在减少危害的同时增加收益。
根据第三段中的“One project, ‘The Jump’, is to ‘holiday local’, taking short flights once every 3 years and long
flights very rarely.(一个名为‘The Jump’的项目,主张‘在当地旅游’,它每三年进行一次短途飞行,很少有长途飞行。)” 根据最后一段中的“As we face an environmental emergency that grows ever more dangerous, it is important to develop appreciation for nature that surrounds us.(当我们面临越来越危险的环境紧急情况时,培养对周围自然的欣赏是至关重要的。)”
根据最后一段“As we face an environmental
emergency that grows ever more dangerous, it is important to develop appreciation for nature that surrounds us. In a small way, holiday outings to watch dragonflies, kingfishers or seals, or be surrounded by trees that are coming into leaf, could help us to focus on what matters.(当我们面临越来越危险的环境紧急情况时,培养对周围自然的欣赏是至关重要的。 故选A。

Leo Ajayi, aged 15, and Jim Green, aged 14, were good friends. Every autumn the two families would go together on a trip to the Rocky Mountains. This year, under the guidance of park workers, they camped on the hillside. After putting up the tents, the two boys announced to climb Cathedral Mountain nearby on their own the next morning and promised their parents that they would return before dark.
Early the following day, the friends set off with a bag packed with food and water. Along the winding path, they admired a sea of colourful leaves spreading beneath their feet. As they got near to the top, the path was rocky and less travelled. After three hours, they reached the top and enjoyed the beautiful view from the mountaintop. Lost in the breathtaking scenery, they felt refreshed from tiredness. How worthwhile the trip was!
Having got enough rest, Leo and Jim decided to climb down. Suddenly, trouble began. On one very dangerous part of the mountain, Jim fell three
metres off the side of the path. Leo climbed down to where Jim was and found him badly injured and not able to move.
“Help!” Leo shouted. NO REPLY. “Help! Help!” Leo almost cried. But still no replies. “If only I had brought my mobile phone in the bag,” Leo thought, regretful and sad. Taking a deep breath, he tried to calm himself down. Then he noticed Jim was bleeding. So he cleaned the dirt and blood from Jim's face and hands, and then tried to help Jim stand up, but Jim's right leg was hurt badly. They had to wait and hope that help would come. While they waited for help, Leo gave Jim his food and water
and let him lie on his jacket. Leo used an extra shirt to keep Jim warm and they rested together against a rock. However, as darkness started to fall, the weather turned cold and windy and help still didn't arrive.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

Jim to be alone on such a cold, windy night. Cold autumn wind
made Leo shiver. Disappointment welled up inside him. Leo knew
he had to do something rather than staying still. Weighing the pros
and cons, Leo finally decided that the only way to help his friend

was to carry him down the mountain. So, Leo carried Jim on his
back and they started the long climb back to the campsite. But the
mountainous path was even tougher and more rocky for Leo to
climb down, let alone Jim was on his back.
Seeing this, Jim asked Leo to leave him alone again. ____________
