Illustrated by: Quentin Blake
My rating: ★★★★★ (5 stars = Great; 4 stars = Very good; 3 stars = OK; 2 stars = Bad; 1 star = Terrible)

Do you have the same feeling? No matter how full we are after a big meal, we still want to eat dessert.
Of course, we don’t have two stomachs. But scientists tell us that wanting sweets is just how our brains (大脑) work. Even when our bodies don’t need more food, our brains keep asking for sugar.
Scientists did a study on some mice. These mice were full, but when they saw sugar, something interesting happened.
There are special nerve cells in the mice’s bodies called POMC neurons (神经元). Usually, these neurons help the mice feel full. But when the mice saw sugar, these neurons got very active. And when the mice ate the sugar, these neurons sent messages to their brains. These messages made the brains release endorphins (释放内啡肽). Endorphins are like little happiness makers in our bodies. They make us feel really good.
To see how important these neurons were, the scientists stopped the POMC neurons. After that, the mice didn’t feel happy when they ate sugar. So, they didn’t want to eat sugar anymore.
The scientists also did the same kind of tests on people. And you know what? They got almost the same results! What’s more, scientists might find better ways to help us control our sweet tooth by learning how active our brains to dessert in the future. This can make us healthier.
So, next time you really want some ice cream or cake after dinner, don’t feel bad. It’s your brain that makes you want it!
17. Why do we still want to eat sweets even when we are full?
A. Because we have two stomachs. B. Because our brains keep asking for sugar.
C. Because sweets are very delicious. D. Because our bodies need more sugar.
18. What happened when the full mice saw sugar? Put the following sentences into the right order.
①The neurons sent messages to their brains.
②They make us feel really good.
③The neurons got very active.
④The brains release endorphins.
A. ①②③④ B. ③②④① C. ③①②④ D. ③①④②
19. What happened to the mice when the scientists stopped the POMC neurons?
A. They didn’t feel happy any more. B. They weren’t happy when they ate sugar.
C. They ate more sugar than before. D. They became more positive.
20. What might scientists do in the future according to the passage (根据文章)?
A. Find better ways to make us healthier. B. Stop people from eating any sweets.
C. Make more delicious sweets to be happy. D. Help us to eat more sugar to be healthy.
