Ⅰ.阅读理解
Benjamin West, the father of American painting, showed his talent for art when he was only six years of age.But he did not know about brushes before a visitor told him he needed one. In those days, a brush was made from camel's hair. There were no camels nearby. Benjamin decided that cat hair would work instead. He cut some fur from the family cat to make a brush.
The brush did not last long.Soon Benjamin needed more fur. Before long, the cat began to look ragged (蓬乱).His father said that the cat must be sick.Benjamin was forced to admit what he had been doing.
The_cat's_lot_was_about_to_improve . That year, one of Benjamin's cousins, Mr.Pennington, came to visit. He was impressed with Benjamin's drawings. When he went home, he sent Benjamin a box of paint and some brushes. He also sent six engravings(版画) by an artist. These were the first pictures and first real paint and brushes Benjamin had ever seen.
In 1747, when Benjamin was nine years old, Mr.Pennington returned for another visit. He was amazed at what Benjamin had done with his gift.He asked Benjamin's parents if he might take the boy back to Philadelphia for a visit.
In the city, Mr.Pennington gave Benjamin materials for creating oil paintings. The boy began a landscape (风景)painting.William Williams, a wellknown painter, came to see him work. Williams was impressed with Benjamin and gave him two classic books on painting to take home. The books were long and dull.Benjamin could read only a little, having been a poor student. But he later said, “Those two books were my companions by day, and under my pillow at night.” While it is likely that he understood very little of the books, they were his introduction to classical paintings. The nineyearold boy decided then that he would be an artist.

[语篇导读] 本文主要介绍了美国绘画之父本杰明·韦斯特小时候的艺术启蒙。
1.C [主旨大意题。根据文章第一段首句“Benjamin West...when he was only six years of age”以及第四段首句“In 1747,when Benjamin was nine years old”和最后一段内容,并结合全文可知,文章主要讲述了本杰明·韦斯特少年时代的艺术启蒙,故选C项。]
根据文章第五段首句“In the city,Mr.Pennington gave Benjamin materials for creating oil paintings”可知,为了更好地开发本杰明的绘画天赋,堂兄给他提供了创作油画的材料,故选B项。]
4.D [推理判断题。根据文章最后一段本杰明说的话以及“While it is likely that he understood...The nineyearold boy decided then that he would be an artist”可推知,Williams给本杰明的两本关于绘画的经典书籍帮助本杰明打开了艺术之门,使他立志成为艺术家,故选D项。]

Tips for College Freshmen
You may have grown up living with lots of siblings, or this may be your first time sharing your living space with someone else. ____1______ However, it can also be a great part of your college experience.
Follow these five tips to make sure you and your roommate keep things pleasant and supportive throughout the year (or even years).
1.Address problems when they're little.
Is your roommate always forgetting his stuff for the shower and taking yours? Are your clothes being borrowed faster than you can wash them? Addressing things that bother you while they're still little can help your roommate be aware of something he may not otherwise know. And addressing little things is much easier than addressing them after they've become big.
2. ____2____
This may seem simple, but it's probably one of the biggest reasons why roommates experience disagreements or arguments.Don't think he'll mind if you borrow his shoes for a quick soccer game? For all you know, you just stepped over an uncrossable line.Don't borrow, use, or take anything without getting permission first.
3.Be friendly without expecting to be best friends.
Don't go into your roommate relationship thinking that you are going to be best friends for the time when you're at school. It may happen, but expecting it sets both of you up for trouble. You should be friendly with your roommate. ____3____
4.Be open to new things.
Your roommate may be from someplace you've never heard of. ____4____ Be open to new ideas and experiences, especially as they relate to what your roommate brings into your life. That's why you go to college in the first place, right?
5.Stay open to change.
You should expect to learn, grow and change during your time at school. And the same should happen to your roommate,if all goes well.In the beginning, everything seems exciting and interesting. ____5____ Anyway,be comfortable addressing things that unexpectedly come up,setting new rules, and being flexible to your changing environment.
A.Respect your roommate's stuff.
B.Never touch anything of your roommate's.
C.Having a roommate inevitably has its challenges.
D.Meanwhile, make sure you have your own social circles.
E.It can be easier than you think to solve your problems ideally.
F.He may have a religion or lifestyle that is completely different from your own.
G.As the semester progresses, things will be different and even hard for both of you.
