I’m Lora, an 18-year-old who secretly drew brain diagrams on paper while classmates drew cartoons. However, “Art feeds the soul but starves the body,” Mom always said. Her words kept coming to my mind and prevented me from making a decision. The watercolor brushes and the pre-medical application form on my desk seemed to gaze at me together.
Then came the school career fair that changed everything. Dr. Eleanor Whitman from Harvard asked us to list our “hidden skills”. My hand shook as I wrote “observing details”, something I’d learned from painting flowers. “That’s medical research’s most needed skill!” she said, sharing how a student turned science notes into textbook illustrations. For the first time, I realized that my two worlds didn’t feel so separate.
The real surprise came during hospital volunteering. Watching surgeries, I noticed something — the steady hands of doctors reminded me of my brushwork. When a boy couldn’t explain his pain, I drew a fire-breathing dragon on his cast (石膏). “You made medicine speak,” the nurse said. Slowly, my drawing pads were filled with cells that looked like colored-glass art and X-rays arranged like abstract paintings.
Mr. Dawson, our career counselor, helped me see the connection. On his whiteboard, my medical knowledge and art skills overlapped in a bright yellow circle labeled “Medical Illustration”. He showed me job listings I never knew about — people who draw pictures for science apps or 3D models of body parts for doctors to study. “Your ‘impractical’ skill makes you stand out,” he said, pointing to my dragon drawing now used in pain management workshops. From that day on, I had the answer in my heart about what I should be in the future.
Today, my microscope and paintbrushes share the same desk. The same hands that once hesitated between them now create 3D models of viruses for medical education. Sometimes I teach young patients to draw their feelings instead of describing them. My story isn’t about a choice between your heart or reality — it’s about how two passions can work together to make new possibilities.
24. Lora mother’s words ______.
A. stopped Lora from making a living as an artist. B. had a bad impact on Lora’s class performance.
C. made Lora hesitate between art and medicine. D. inspired Lora to choose medical illustration.
25. Dr. Eleanor Whitman helped Lora realize ______.
A. hidden skills were hard to develop from painting.
B. medical illustration required scientific knowledge.
C. her flower paintings could be textbook illustrations.
D. her art-related skills could be useful in medical research.
26. What led Lora to make a decision on job choice?
A The nurse’s praise. B. Her mother’s warning.
C. The boy patient’s needs. D. Mr. Dawson’s introduction.
27. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Opportunities favor the prepared. B. Follow the beaten track to success.
C. Combining talents creates new chances. D. Never place all your eggs in one basket.

There’s a reason for the phrase “the eyes are the window to the soul.” You don’t have to be a psychologist to know that the eyes communicate a lot of information. And a recent study reveals how humans use their eyes to communicate without words. In the future, this line of research could lead to a better understanding of how people with conditions that affect social skills.
“We try to find the reason for why our brain engages with social information differently,” said Ristic, a professor of psychology at McGill University in Canada and the senior author of the study, which was published online in September.
In the research, Ristic and her colleagues were interested in understanding whether people respond to intentional eye movements differently than they do to unintentional eye movements. First, they recorded people sitting in front of a screen and moving their eyes in response to prompts (提示词) on that screen. For instance, the individuals were sometimes prompted to move their eyes left or right—their choice—and other times, they were clearly directed to look one way or the other.
Next, the researchers invited about 80 participants to watch these recordings, which were cut just before the people in the video actually moved their eyes. In each video clip, the participants were asked to predict which way each person would glance: left or right.
“They were faster to make these decisions when the looks were intentional,” Ristic said. This difference in prediction speed was a matter of a few milliseconds, but it revealed that people process intentional and unintentional stares differently.
The researchers analyzed their video recordings to figure out what participants might be seeing that would help them more quickly predict eye motion before a person intentionally shifted their stare. To the naked eye, it didn’t look like the recorded individuals were moving at all. But in a close analysis, the researchers found that there was more motion around the eye area before someone chose to move their stare versus when they were told which way to look. These tiny movements might have been a “tell”.
“We guess based on this that these very subtle motion signals are communicated very quickly to indicate intentionally to others and that our system as the observer is very sensitive to that,” Ristic said.
The next step in the research will be to use more precise eye-tracking techniques to understand these subtle signals. The team plans to conduct follow-up studies with participants who have a condition that affects social skills such as autism (自闭症). In these neurodevelopmental disorders, people may struggle to notice and interpret social signals. “This is one of the key questions in the autism world,” Ristic said. “Where is the system working differently, and in which aspects?”
28. Why did Ristic conduct the study?
A. To prove that the eyes are the window to the soul.
B. To find out why people can know intentions from stares.
C. To explore why brains handle social information in different ways.
D. To confirm that eyes are more sensitive in the communication system.
29. According to Paragraph 6, what might the tiny movements have told?
A. People’s intentional stares. B. People’s video recordings.
C. People’s social conditions. D. People’s naked eyes.
30. According to the passage, the study may ______.
A. help understand social challenges in autism. B. improve communication efficiency.
C. find signs of social skill disorders. D. perfect eye-tracking techniques.
D
“Woman reading book, under a night sky, dreamy atmosphere.” I type into Deep Dream Generator’s Text 2 Dream feature. In less than a minute, an image is returned to me showing what I’ve described.
Welcome to the world of AI image generation (生成), where you can create what on the surface looks like top-rank artwork using just a few text prompts. But closer examination shows strangeness. The face of the woman in my image has very strange features, and appears to be holding various books. And, while I did feel excited at seeing an image appear, I didn’t have any creative satisfaction.
AI image generation could impact everything from film to graphic novels and more. Children’s illustrators were quick to raise concerns about the technology. They say AI-generated art is the exact opposite of what art is believed to be. Basically, art is translating what you feel inside into something that exists outside. Whatever form it takes, true art is about the creative process much more than it’s about the final piece. And simply pressing a button to generate an image is not a creative process.
Beyond creativity, there are deeper issues. To create images from prompts, AI generators rely on databases of already existing art and text. This could lead to the creation of images that purposely copy the style of other artists, without their agreement. There is an argument that AI generators work no differently to humans when it comes to being influenced by others’ work. However, a human artist is adding emotion and details into the mix. AI doesn’t do the same — it can only copy.
The increasing use of AI will also lead to devaluation of the work of artists. People may think that their AI-generated “work” is as acceptable as that created by someone who has spent a career making art. It’s wrong, of course. The skills, effort, and vision of human artists shouldn’t be ignored. You can use your mobile phone to take a nice picture of your daughters, but it cannot compare with the work of professional photographers.
31. The author mentioned Deep Dream Generator to ______.
A. introduce the topic of AI image generation B. share the author’s personal experience
C. promote the latest AI image generator D. describe the author’s dream device
32. What can we learn from the passage?
A. AI image generation lacks the true creative process of human art.
B. AI image generators are unable to fulfill the complex prompts.
C. Children’s illustrators are eager to adopt AI image generation.
D. Human emotional input can be added in AI image generation.
33. What does the word “devaluation” underlined in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Improvement in quality. B. Decrease in worth.
C. Drop in creativity. D. Change in style.
34. What is the author’s attitude towards AI image generation?
A. Satisfied. B. Worried. C. Optimistic. D. Puzzled.

第三部分 书面表达(共两节,32分)
第一节(共4小题;第40、41题各2分,第42题3分,第43题5分,共12分)
阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。请在答题卡指定区域作答。
I’ll admit it — when someone asks me how I’m doing, the first word that usually comes out of my mouth is “busy”. It seems that “busy” has become the new normal.
The desire to keep busy is an essential part of being human. People love feeling important and needed, which is what “busy” provides. So they make packed schedules to keep themselves busy.
But are you really as busy as you think you are? Most career-driven people would probably guess they spend most of their time at work. But author Laura Vanderkam argues that that’s probably not the case. In her new book, I Know How She Does It, 143 mothers with six-figure jobs recorded what they did for every hour of one week. Surprisingly, these “busy” women worked only 44 hours a week on average and slept nearly eight hours a night, leaving 70 hours per week for other things. The result apparently reveals that people think they are busy, but in fact their time is not highly occupied by work.
Why? The reason lies in the fact that negative events tend to stand out in the mind more than positive events. People overestimate (高估) the things they don’t want to do — work, housework — and underestimate the things they do want to do.
Simply tracking how you spend your time is the first step in breaking free of the “busy” trap. It’s a lot harder to lie to ourselves when we see where the time goes, right there in black and white. It is also necessary to recognize that you’re responsible for your time management, and stop telling people how busy you are. Ask yourself: “Am I truly overworking?” Pause when someone asks “How are you?” — truly reflect instead of saying “busy”.
40. Why do people like to keep themselves busy?

A. The nurse’s praise.
【答案】24. C 25. D 26. D 27. C

The team plans to conduct follow-up studies with participants who have a condition that affects social skills, such as autism (自闭症).
30. According to the passage the study may ______.
A. help understand social challenges in autism. B. improve communication efficiency.
C. find signs of social skill disorders. D. perfect eye-tracking techniques.
【答案】28. C 29. A 30. A

A. Satisfied. B. Worried. C. Optimistic. D. Puzzled.
【答案】31. A 32. A 33. B 34. B
根据第一段““Woman reading book, under a night sky, dreamy atmosphere.” I type into Deep Dream Generator’s Text 2 Dream feature. In less than a minute, an image is returned to me showing what I’ve described. (“夜空下,女人读书,梦幻的氛围。”我在Deep Dream Generator的Text 2 Dream功能中输入。不到一分钟,系统就返回给我一张显示我所描述内容的图片)”以及第二段“Welcome to the world of AI image generation (生成), where you can create what on the surface looks like top-rank artwork using just a few text prompts.(欢迎来到AI图像生成的世界,在这里,你只需几个文本提示就能创作出表面上看似一流的艺术作品)”可知,作者提到自己用Deep Dream Generator创作图片是为了引出下文将要讨论的AI图像生成这一主题。故选A项。
【32题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Basically, art is translating what you feel inside into something that exists outside. Whatever form it takes, true art is about the creative process much more than it’s about the final piece. And simply pressing a button to generate an image is not a creative process.(从本质上讲,艺术是将你内心的感受转化为外在存在的东西。无论它采取什么形式,真正的艺术更多的是关于创作过程,而不是最终的作品。而简单地按下一个按钮来生成图像并不是一个创作过程)”可知,AI图像生成缺乏人类艺术真正的创作过程。故选A项。
【33题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词后文“People may think that their AI-generated “work” is as acceptable as that created by someone who has spent a career making art.(人们可能认为他们AI生成的“作品”和那些花了一辈子时间创作艺术的人的作品一样可以被接受)”可知,人们可能会认为AI生成的作品和人类艺术家的作品一样有价值,结合常识可推知,既然AI生成的作品和人类艺术家的作品一样有价值,那么AI的广泛使用就会导致艺术家作品的价值降低,故“devaluation”意为“价值的降低”,与B项“Decrease in worth.”意思一致。故选B项。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“And simply pressing a button to generate an image is not a creative process.(而简单地按下一个按钮来生成图像并不是一个创作过程)”、第四段“Beyond creativity, there are deeper issues.(除了创造力之外,还有更深层次的问题)”以及最后一段“The increasing use of AI will also lead to devaluation of the work of artists.(AI的日益使用也将导致艺术家作品的贬值)”可推知,作者对AI图像生成持担忧态度。故选B项。
