Learning about AI ▲
AI works by using algorithms (算法), or step-by-step instructions, to help computers understand and work with information. For example, if you wanted to teach a computer to know different types of fruits, you would give it a lot of pictures of fruits and tell it which ones are apples, bananas, and so on. The computer would then use this information to find out what new fruits are. This process is called “machine learning”.
What can AI be used for?
AI is already being used in many different areas. For example, AI can be used to:● diagnose and treat diseases;
● drive self-driving cars;
● recommend movies and TV shows according to your viewing history;
● help teachers give marks to papers.
The Future of AI
In the future, AI may completely change many parts of our lives and help us solve some of the world’s biggest problems. However, it’s also important to remember that AI is just a tool, and it’s up to us to decide how we use it. With responsible and ethical (合乎道德的) use, AI can make the world a better place for everyone!

Every bridge is a symbol of the times. Most of them look similar, but there are great differences in the way they are built. Let’s learn about bridges around the world.
Cable-stayed bridge
The Hong-Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) is the longest sea-crossing bridge and a kind of cable-stayed bridge. It was opened in 2018. The construction (建造) of the HZMB requires cutting-edge technology and careful planning. Its opening proves that humans are making miracles (奇迹) with great effort and wisdom.
Drawbridge
London Tower Bridge has been standing over the River Thames since 1894. The bridge is known for its bascule (桥梁板), and this part can be raised to allow tall ships to pass through. From the top of the bridge, you could enjoy the beautiful views of the River Thames.
Arch bridge
One of the oldest arch (拱) bridges is Zhaozhou Bridge in Hebei Province. It was built by Li Chun of Sui Dynasty about 1,400 years ago. There are two small arches at each side of the big arch. Usually, the river runs through the big arch. When there is a flood (洪水), the river can also run through the four small ones. So today the bridge is still in use.
Arches play an important part in bridges. They are used for spreading the weight they are carrying out. Why not make your own model arch? You just need some paper and a pair of scissors.
Steps:
①Cut out one large shape and six small shapes.
②Lay out all of the paper pieces like this. Make sure the large piece will be put in the central place of this arch as it holds the whole arch together.
Try it, test it and make it better!
21. How many kinds of bridges are mentioned in the text?
A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
22. What does the underlined word “cutting-edge” mean in paragraph 2?
A. High. B. Low. C. Simple. D. Old.

A. By telling a story. B. By listing numbers.
C. By making a model arch. D. By introducing some bridges.
25. What is the main purpose of writing this text?
A. To tell readers the history of bridges. B. To show readers the views on bridges.
C. To advise readers to enjoy and visit. D. To encourage readers to know and practise.

The Hexi Corridor (河西走廊), a 1,000-kilometer-long historical trade route in Gansu Province, stretches between the Qilian Mountains and the Heihe River. Known as the “Golden Section of the Silk Road,” it once connected ancient China to Central Asia. However, over the past 50 years, rapid desertification (沙漠化) has threatened this region. Nearly 30% of the land has turned into desert, forcing many villages to relocate (搬迁) .
To solve this problem, scientists and locals have worked together. Step 1: Fixing the sand. They lay straw checkerboards (草方格) across the desert. These grids, made of wheat straw, can reduce wind speed by 50% and trap moving sand. Step 2: Planting trees. Drought-resistant plants like saxaul (梭梭树) are grown in the grids. Their roots can reach 10 meters deep to find water. Step 3: Saving water. Farmers now use drip irrigation systems, which save 60% more water than traditional methods.
The government has also taken action. Since 2020, over 20,000 hectares (公顷) of desert have been turned into green land. Drones and AI are used to monitor plant growth. In Minqin County, once called “the place swallowed by desert,” 70% of the desert is now under control. Local people even develop eco-tourism (生态旅游) —visitors plant trees and ride camels through restored grasslands.
Future challenges: Climate change and limited water resources remain problems. But as Mr. Wang, a farmer, said: “My grandchildren will see a greener corridor! ”
52. What is the main cause of the Hexi Corridor’s problem?
A. Floods. B. Desertification. C. Air pollution. D. Overpopulation.
53. How do straw checkerboards help?
A. By cleaning rivers. B. By stopping sand movement.
C. By growing crops. D. By building roads.
54. Why are saxaul trees special?
A. Their roots grow very deep. B. They produce delicious fruit.
C. They need lots of rainwater. D. They attract tourists.
55. What technology is used to watch plant growth?
A. Robots. B. Drones and AI. C. Satellites. D. Underwater cameras.
56. What does Mr. Wang’s words show?
A. Anger. B. Hope. C. Disappointment. D. Boredom.

Pencils and Pens
No one knows who invented pencils or when it happened. A Swiss described a pencil in a book in 1565. He said it was a piece of wood with lead inside it. (Lead is a very heavy, soft, dark gray metal.) Pencils weren’t popular, and people continued to write with pens. They used bird feathers as pens.
Then, in 1795, someone started making pencils from graphite (石墨), and they became very popular. One pencil can write 50,000 English words or make a line 55 kilometers long.
People wrote with feather pens and then used pens with metal points. They had to dip (蘸) the point into ink after every few letters. Next, someone invented a fountain pen that could hold ink inside it. A fountain pen can write several pages before you have to fill it again.
Two Hungarian brothers, Ladislao and Georg Biro, invented the ballpoint pen. English pilots liked the pens. They couldn’t write with fountain pens in airplanes because the ink leaked out. Later, a French company called Bic bought the Biros’ company.
Some people call ballpoint pens “Bics.” Australians call them “Biros.” Whatever we call them, we use them every day.

There is a great need to search for clean and renewable(可再生的) energy to meet our needs. It seems that wind energy is a good choice. Do you know anything about wind energy?
The first advantage of wind energy is that it truly is a renewable resource. No matter how much wind we use to produce electricity, we will never reduce the supply(供应) of wind. This is its greatest advantage compared with non-renewable resources like coal or oil. Second, wind energy is a clean source of energy, which means it produces environment-friendly electricity. What’s more, the large towers, which provide the base for the wind turbines(涡轮机), don’t take up lots of space. They can share land with farms.
However, each coin has two sides. That is to say wind energy does have some disadvantages. Wind does not provide supply of energy without stopping. Even the windiest places on earth have periods of calm. If there isn’t a strong wind, wind turbines are not able to produce electricity. The large blades of wind turbines can be very dangerous for birds and bats. The turbines cause noise pollution. It can also be bad to people living around.
Although wind energy has disadvantages, its advantages shouldn’t be forgotten.
