“A man does not know his true identity when he does not know the background of where he comes from.” says Paul Ninson, a Ghanaian photojournalist. Here in New York, thousands of miles from Ghana, he found numerous visual images of life in Africa, past and present, in the archives (档案室) of the city’s libraries, galleries and museums. This led to an idea: create a library of photobooks in Ghana to bring the African story home.
Deeply influenced by his grandparents’ storytelling traditions Ninson decided to pursue a career in photography. He left Ghana in 2019 to seek a formal education in photojournalism at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York City. There, he read the center’s hundreds of photobooks while in Ghana, he only had access to five or six of such books. As he ventured deeper into the city, he discovered more visual histories of Africa than he had experienced at home. This led to his idea to create a library in Africa that held such stories.
With characteristic determination, Ninson began searching New York City for books to ship to Ghana. He searched secondhand stores, engaged in online bidding wars and reached out for publishers donations. He maxed out credit cards and filled his apartment with over 30,000 volumes. With help from a friend Brandon Stanton, a GoFundMe campaign raised $1.2 million, enabling shipment of the collection to Ghana.
In December 2022, the local library Dikan Center opened near the Gulf of Guinea. It offers free public access to photobooks documenting Africa’s past and present. Beyond its collection, Dikan Center provides workshops, fellowships, and seminars on visual storytelling, empowering a new generation to reshape Africa’s narrative. Local artist Daniella Afful sees Dikan Center as transformative: “It has boosted art and photography, giving hope for preserving our history and making history.”
24. What inspired Ninson to build a photobook library?
A. His interest in history books. B. His fancy of New York libraries.
C. His ambition to make a fortune. D. His desire to bring Africa culture back home.
25. Why did Ninson go to New York in 2019?
A. To raise money for a library building. B. To improve himself as a photographer.
C. To seek his family roots and traditions. D. To collect books about African history.
26. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A. Ninson was involved in a war. B. Ninson used his own money to pay for books.
C. Brandon Stanton donated some books to him. D. African government arranged to ship the books back.
27. What can be inferred about the library from Daniella Afful’s words?
A. It provides more job opportunities. B. It has transformed people’s hobbies.
C. It is helpful to preserve local history. D. It is widely welcomed by the natives.

AI is rapidly transforming how we live, work, and communicate. But can we undergo that transformation without destroying the environment? As the tech industry has grown, so have data centers. Data centers are enormous buildings filled with hundreds of thousands of computers that store cloud data and power artificial intelligence. To keep up with computing demands, data centers use electricity and sometimes chilled water to keep those computers cool.
There are no regulations for AI and no legal framework requiring tech companies to reveal their energy and water consumption. That has led scientists like Shaolei Ren, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of California, Riverside, to investigate this question independently. Ren was among the first to study the water footprint of AI. In a 2023 pre-print of a paper, Ren’s team estimated that to train the GPT-3 language model consumed hundreds of thousands of liters of fresh water.
As AI models have grown in size, so has the energy required to run and maintain their infrastructure. A 2024 report by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory forecast that by 2028, U.S. data centers could consume as much as 12% of the nation’s electricity.
Meanwhile, the biggest U. S. data center operators have promised a green future. Google, Microsoft and Meta have all promised to reach at least net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. Amazon has set their net-zero deadline for 2040. All four companies have also agreed to be water positive by 2030, meaning they’d put more water back into the environment than they use.
Two additional ways tech companies are seeking to offset their carbon footprint are with nuclear energy and more efficient data centers.
Scientists wonder how the tech industry plans to square their climate promises alongside the increasing demand for AI computing power. “I think before generative AI came along in late 2022, there was hope among these data center operators that they could go to net zero. I don’t see how you can, under current infrastructure investment plans, you could possibly achieve those net zero goals,” says Benjamin Lee, a professor of electrical and systems engineering at the University of Pennsylvania.
28. Why did Shaolei Ren study the water footprint of AI?
A. To develop more efficient AI models. B. To investigate AI’s resource consumption.
C. To help tech companies achieve their goals. D. To promote the use of nuclear energy in data centers.
29. What does the “12%” figure aim to highlight?
A. The rapid growth of Al models. B. The great potential of AI development.
C. The urgent need to control infrastructure. D. The high energy consumption of U. S. data centers.
30. What’s Benjamin Lee’s attitude to net-zero goals?
A. Doubtful. B. Confident. C. Indifferent. D. Supportive.
31. What can be the most suitable title for the text?
A. New Era: The Rise of AI B. Tech Companies: Green Guarantees
C. AI Expansion: Environmental Concerns D. Data Centers: The Core of AI Technology

If you relieve stress by playing with dogs or checking their adorable videos on social media, you might be onto something. A small study published in the journal PLOS One suggests interacting with dogs in such ways may strengthen people’s brain waves associated with rest and relaxation.
Multiple studies have shown emotional, physiological, and cognitive benefits from interactions with dogs — such as boosted energy, increased positive emotions, or lowered risk for memory loss. This new study, led by Onyoo Yoo, a doctoral student at Konkuk University in Seoul, aimed to discover how specific activities with a dog affect mood, by both objectively measuring brain activity and asking participants about their subjective emotions.
The study involved 30 healthy adults (average age 28) in Seongnam, South Korea. Each participant performed eight activities (meeting, playing, feeding, massaging, grooming, photographing, hugging, walking) with a well-trained 4-year-old poodle (贵宾犬) in a quiet room. Brain waves were measured via EEG (脑电波) during each 3-minute activity, followed by emotional state questionnaires.
Different activities had varying effects on participants’ brain waves. Playing and walking with a dog increased alpha-band oscillations (α波段振动), associated with stability, relaxation, improved memory, and reduced mental stress. Grooming, playing, and massaging strengthened beta-band oscillations, linked to heightened attention and concentration. Participants also reported feeling significantly less depressed, stressed, and exhausted after interacting with the dog.
Experts highlighted the study’s significance. Dr. Colleen Dell, a professor at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada, called it “super exciting” because, while benefits are already known, this research provides objective insight into how these benefits occur neurologically during specific interactions. However, experts also noted limitations — such as the low number of study participants and the fact they didn’t have mental, medical or neurological conditions, which could benefit the most from these types of interventions, said Dr. Tiffany Braley at the University of Michigan. Additionally, the study didn’t have a control group to see if the actions, when done with a human instead of a dog, would have similar benefits.
32. What does the underlined phrase “be onto something” in Para. 1 refer to?
A. Be on the wrong track. B. Be on the edge of a discovery.
C. Be involved in a difficult task. D. Be engaged in a meaningless activity.
33. How did the researchers conduct the study?
A. By analyzing data from previous similar studies.
B. By observing people’s daily interactions with dogs.
C. By measuring brain waves and using questionnaires.
D. By comparing human-dog interactions in different groups.
34. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The finding of the study. B. The benefits for the brain waves.
C. The reasons for emotional changes. D. The comparison among interacting activities.
35. What do experts think of the study?
A. It makes no breakthrough in the field. B. It provides completely reliable evidence.
C. It works better on people with health issues. D. It has both great significance and limitations.

If you feel like your communication is difficult because of distance, your friends probably feel that way too, so don’t be afraid to be the first one to reach out. When phone calls won’t cut it, think about a visit. Visiting is one of the most important things we can do to keep a long distance friendship going.
Address conflicts openly

It is the last day of fourth grade. Outside of my classroom I fearfully opened the envelope that held my academic report card. “Please, I just want to pass.” I prayed in my heart. “Promoted to fifth grade,” the report read. I was letting out a loud sigh of relief when my eyes went to the words on the bottom. “Teacher: Mrs. Walitt.”
“What?” I looked closer, certain I’d misread, but now the name seemed to jump off the page in 3D. This wasn’t possible. Mrs. Walitt taught first grade. My one comfort about school was that this woman-literally my least favorite teacher on the planet-would never teach me. I was no favorite of hers either.
I was self-conscious about my stutter (口吃), and tried to make up for it by speaking and reading out loud. That past year I’d been frequently pulled from my regular class for special tutoring in a room shared with Mrs. Walitt’s first graders. One day early on, Mrs. Walitt called me out from across the room. “Quiet down,” she said. “You’re interrupting us.”
I instantly responded. “Oh, just leave me alone!” I said.
“You’d better be glad you’re not in my class, young man. I’d put you in your place.”
I’d been taught by my parents to respect my teachers. But all my frustration came pouring out of me. I said, “You will never be my teacher.” No matter how badly I did in school, I was sure I wouldn’t have to repeat first grade.
For the rest of the year, Mrs. Walitt and I didn’t have much communication.
Now Mrs. Walitt was having the last laugh. On the first day of fifth grade, I sat unhappy in the last row. “Welcome to fifth grade,” she announced once we were settled. “I expect students to come to school ready to learn...” She went on and on, talking about the orders. I felt quite bored.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
But the moment she began teaching an entirely different Mrs. Walitt appeared.

With Mrs. Walitt’s constant encouragement, my grades improved beyond belief.

Deeply influenced by his grandparents’ storytelling traditions, Ninson decided to pursue a career in photography.

B 29. D 30. A 31. C

34 What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The finding of the study. B. The benefits for the brain waves.
C. The reasons for emotional changes. D. The comparison among interacting activities.
35. What do experts think of the study?
A It makes no breakthrough in the field. B. It provides completely reliable evidence.
C. It works better on people with health issues. D. It has both great significance and limitations.
B 33. C 34. A 35. D

故填Based。
故填was inspired。
date back to是固定短语,意为“追溯到”,因此空格处用介词to。故填to。
故填an。
故填which。

注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
But the moment she began teaching, an entirely different Mrs. Walitt appeared.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
With Mrs. Walitt’s constant encouragement, my grades improved beyond belief.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
But the moment she began teaching, an entirely different Mrs. Walitt appeared. I had to admit she could be funny and engaging. Through her vivid descriptions, the boring knowledge came to life. I hung on Mrs. Walitt’s words so much that at one point, I forgot myself and shot up my hand. Instead of feeling bothered, she was interested in what I said. Mrs. Walitt always had the power to keep us on the edge of our seats. Gradually, I got used to participating in her class with her praise and encouragement. To my amazement, I was stuttering less and less.
With Mrs. Walitt’s constant encouragement, my grades improved beyond belief. For the first time in my life, I was bringing home A’s. Mrs. Walitt moved me from the lower reading and writing level to the advanced. I beamed with pride and worked even harder. More than that, Mrs. Walitt made me feel like I could accomplish anything with enough focus. Fifth grade had been my favorite year of school ever. On the last day, I opened my report card. “Promoted to the sixth grade,” I read. “Advanced class.” And I knew I owed it all to Mrs. Walitt.
