I practiced half an hour every day, went to lessons once a week, and occasionally played in a group concert. Like most kids, I always thought practicing was boring. If my parents hadn't been there to make me practice, I probably would have put down my violin and never have picked it up again. I met Moira when I was 11 at an Irish music party. Moira hosted the party that night, playing the violin, singing and dancing. She made sure that everyone in the room got involved and had a great time. I immediately fell in love with the music she played and the energy that she brought to it. Just a few days after that party, I took my first lesson with Moira, and I continued taking lessons with Moira throughout middle school. When I started playing the violin with Moira, playing music became something that I loved. She introduced me to so many types of music, from Irish to Old Time, to Cajun. Moira also taught me to play the guitar. Soon we started performing together and were shocked to discover that people actually wanted to hear us! When I began to play the violin, practicing was something that I did at home in my living room, but with Moira's influence it quickly became something that I did everywhere. I played on street corners, at festivals, at the beach, at parties, at weddings, and late at night in my friends' kitchens. Moira took the music out of the classroom and brought it to life. Her passion (激情) was not only for playing music, but also for sharing it. My time with Moira allowed me to grow both musically and personally. I have met so many special people and had so many invaluable experiences. Moira has proven to be the most important influence in my musical development, and also my invaluable friend. 4. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A. The writer had her violin lessons every day. B. The writer disliked the kids who hated the violin. C. The writer usually played music in school concerts. D. At first the writer was not active in learning the violin. 5. What can we infer from the passage? A. The writer was proud of Moira’s achievements in music. B. The writer became a popular local actress. C. The writer spent all her spare time playing the violin. D. The writer had more selfconfidence in terms of performing. 6. What can we know from the last paragraph? A. Moira didn't like to play music in the classroom. B. Moira helped the writer a lot with her personal life. C. Moira had great influence on the writer's life. D. Moira was very thankful for the writer's support. 7. What would be the best title for the passage? A. My Way to Success. B. My Invaluable Friend. C. My Middle School Life. D. How I Learned the Violin. C With the world's attention on vaccines, now it feels like a good moment to sing the praises of an often forgotten contributor to their development. Three hundred years ago this month, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu got her daughter inoculated(接种)against smallpox, making her child the first person in the West to be protected in this way. Without Montagu's willingness to adopt a practice she had learned from other cultures, the introduction of vaccines around 80 years later would never have taken place. Montagu first witnessed inoculation when she accompanied her husband to Turkey. Inoculation had started in Asia, probably in China, as early as the 10th century AD. Montagu observed how older women in Turkey took a tiny amount of pus(脓)from a person with smallpox. They then used needles to make cuts on people's wrists and ankles and added the pus to their bloodstream. This helped people gain immunity from future infection. Like other visitors to the country, Montagu took steps to ensure that her son was inoculated. This worked well, but she knew that trying it in England would be far more challenging. Inoculation performed by unlicensed amateurs would threaten doctors' professional standing and potentially rob them of valuable income. Some people also disagree with the practice, as they saw it as going against nature. Back in England, Montagu observed smallpox infections became increasingly severe. Eventually, in April 1721, she decided to use the Turkish practice to have her daughter inoculated, because she believed that the rewards would outweigh the risks. After a safe time had passed following the inoculation, Montagu allowed doctors to examine her daughter. Doctors in Britain gradually accepted the practice. About 80 years later, a pioneering physician found smallpox vaccines to destroy smallpox completely. As early as last century, academics argued that Montagu was no more than an enthusiastic amateur. In truth, she made a vital scientific contribution towards finding the cure for smallpox. 8. What is the second paragraph mainly about? A. The origin of smallpox inoculation. B. Turkish women's invention of inoculation. C. The benefits from smallpox inoculation. D. Montagu's first access to inoculation. 9. Why did Montagu know it was hard to try inoculation in England? A. Because it might harm doctors' interests. B. Because deep down it was against nature. C. Because it was a foreign practice. D. Because it might cost valuable money. 10. What could have led doctors in Britain to accept inoculation? A. The severe situation in smallpox infections. B. The result of Montagu's daughter's inoculation. C. A physician's discovery of smallpox vaccines. D. Montagu's focus on its rewards rather than its risks 11. Which of the following can be used to describe Montagu? A. a fearless scientist B. a brilliant inventor C. a devoted explorer D. an unsung hero D When it comes to higher education in the United States, one of the biggest issues of discussion and concern in recent years has been the cost. Data from the U.S. Department of Education suggests the average cost of college doubled between 1989 and 2016. James Kvaal is the director of The Institute for College Access and Success. He told VOA that one of the main reasons for the cost increase is reduced government support for colleges and universities. This, in turn, has led schools to raise their prices. Earlier this year, the Center for the Study of Education Policy at Illinois State University published a report on state spending on higher education. The report found a 5% overall increase in proposed spending throughout the country. But Kvaal argues this is still nowhere near the level it was 30 years ago or where it needs to be now. He notes that a lot of students still depend on loans to help pay for their education. To date, about 10% of student borrowers are in default. In other words, they are failing to make the necessary payments toward their debts. Last November, Georgetown University published a study on return on investment in American higher education. Students who attended private colleges and universities made an average of about $73,000 more over 40 years than those who attended public schools. Although the immediate costs to attend a private U.S. university might be higher, the increased cost might be worth it, notes Professor Martin, associate director of the Georgetown Center. One reason these schools have a better return on investment is their reputation. The selectiveness that makes these schools so well-known and well respected, however, creates its own form of inequality. These colleges pay off well if you can afford to go there and if you can get in. But the fact is, the vast majority of people can't do either: They can't afford it. 12. Why did the American universities increase their fees? A. They followed the rules of the market. B. They required more pay for teachers. C. They improved their quality of higher education. D. They received less support from the government. 13. What is the possible result of the higher cost of education? A. More uneducated people. B. More unpaid debts of students. C. A larger gap between universities. D. An effect on the government's reputation. 14. What is Professor Martin’s attitude toward the higher costs of private colleges? A. Positive. B. Objective. C. Negative. D. Uncaring. 15. Where does this text probably come from? A. A speech. B. A guidebook. C. A business magazine. D. An education report. Most of us haven’t been taught how to apologize (道歉). But being honest should always be with us, as honesty is always regarded as a virtue. Every time I talk about the topic, something crowds in my mind as if it had just happened. I was 16 when one morning, Dad told me I could drive him to Mijas and then take the car in a nearby garage to get it serviced. At that time, I had just passed the driving test, and I hardly had a chance to use the car, so I said yes without hesitation. I drove my father to Mijas, promising to pick him up again at 4 pm, then I went to a nearby garage, and put the car in there. Since I had several hours to spare, I decided to go to a movie theater near the garage to see the movie. However, I was so absorbed in the plot of the movie that I forgot the time. When the last movie finished, I looked at my watch: 6 pm. I was two hours late! I thought my father would be very angry if he knew what I was doing. And he would never let me drive again. So I decided to make up an excuse. Then, I drove to the appointed place, my father was sitting in a corner, waiting patiently. I first apologized for being late, then told him that I wanted to get there as soon as possible, but that something was wrong with some of the main parts of the car. I would never forget the way he looked at me. “I'm very disappointed that you thought you had to lie to me, Jason.” My father looked at me again and said, “When you didn't show up on time, I called the gas station and asked if there was anything wrong They told me you never picked up the car. So, you see, I know there's nothing wrong with the car at all." Paragraph 1 A wave of guilt swept over me and I had to admit the fact that I had gone to the movies and that was the real reason why I was late. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2 But father, it's exactly eighteen miles home from here , and it's dark. A. a fearless scientist B. a brilliant inventor C. a devoted explorer D. an unsung hero 【答案】8. D 9. A 10. B 11. D 【解析】 【分析】本文是记叙文。文章主要讲述在疫苗接种上做出努力的一个被遗忘了的应该被歌颂的英雄Montagu的事迹。 【8题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第二段首句“Montagu first witnessed inoculation when she accompanied her husband to Turkey.”(Montagu第一次目睹接种是在她陪丈夫去土耳其的时候。)可知,这一段主要讲述Montagu第一次接触接种的事情。故选D。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“This worked well, but she knew that trying it in England would be far more challenging. Inoculation performed by unlicensed amateurs would threaten doctors' professional standing and potentially rob them of valuable income.”(这起到很好的作用,但是她知道在英格兰尝试这个将会更难。由没有执照的业余人员接种将会威胁到医生的专业地位并且可能抢了他们的高额收入。)可知,在英格兰实施接种很难,是因为这样会威胁到职业医生的利益。故选A。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“After a safe time had passed following the inoculation, Montagu allowed doctors to examine her daughter.”(在接种后的安全期过去后,Montagu允许医生给她的女儿检查。)和最后一段“Doctors in Britain gradually accepted the practice.”(英国的医生渐渐地接受了这个做法。)可知,英国的医生接受了接种,是因为他们看到了Montagu女儿接种的好的结果。故选B。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段“With the world's attention on vaccines, now it feels like a good moment to sing the praises of an often forgotten contributor to their development.”(随着世界对疫苗的关注,现在是一个很好的时刻来歌颂一个为了它们的发展而经常被遗忘的贡献者。)可知,作者认为Montagu是一个被遗忘了的应该被歌颂的英雄。故选D。 D When it comes to higher education in the United States, one of the biggest issues of discussion and concern in recent years has been the cost. 【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. D 【解析】 【分析】这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了美国高等教育学费持续增长带来的问题,并不是所有人都能承担得起这么高的学费。 【12题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中“He told VOA that one of the main reasons for the cost increase is reduced government support for colleges and universities. This, in turn, has led schools to raise their prices. (他对美国之音表示,费用增加的主要原因之一是政府减少了对高校的支持。这反过来又导致学校提高了学费。)”可知,美国大学之所以要提高学费是因为他们从政府那里得到的支持减少了。故选D项。 【13题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中“He notes that a lot of students still depend on loans to help pay for their education. To date, about 10% of student borrowers are in default. In other words, they are failing to make the necessary payments toward their debts. (他指出,许多学生仍然依靠贷款来支付他们的教育费用。到目前为止,大约10%的学生借款人违约。换句话说,他们没有支付必要的债务。)”可以推知,教育费用增加会导致更多的学生未能偿还债务。故选B项。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段中“Although the immediate costs to attend a private U.S. university might be higher, the increased cost might be worth it, notes Professor Martin, associate director of the Georgetown Center. (乔治敦中心副主任Martin教授指出,尽管就读美国私立大学的直接费用可能更高,但增加的费用可能是值得的。)”可以推知,Martin教授对私立大学学费上涨持肯定态度。故选A项。 【15题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段“When it comes to higher education in the United States, one of the biggest issues of discussion and concern in recent years has been the cost. Data from the U.S. Department of Education suggests the average cost of college doubled between 1989 and 2016. (说到美国的高等教育,近年来讨论和关注的最大问题之一就是费用。美国教育部的数据显示,1989年至2016年期间,大学的平均费用翻了一番。)”可知,本文主要介绍了高等教育学费提高带来的问题,故而推知,本文来源于一份教育报告。故选D项。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Most of us haven’t been taught how to apologize (道歉). Sometimes our efforts tend to be hurtful and can make people feel even worse. When the apology is absent or it’s a bad apology, it puts a crack in the very foundation of a relationship and can even end it. And that’s why it is important to get it right. A good and responsible apology can meet the moment and improve our relationships. ___16___ Less is more. Keep your apology short and avoid the drama. If you’ve forgotten to return your friend’s bike, you don’t have to overdo it as if you’ve run over her kitten. Over-apologizing is not only annoying — it affects the flow of the conversation and shifts (转移) the focus away from the person who needs to be paid attention to. ___17___ . No ifs or buts. When you’re apologizing for something, it’s essential to show true sadness and regret. ___18___ . “But” almost always means a criticism, or an excuse. It doesn’t matter whether what you say after the “but” is true. The “but” makes your apology false. ___19___ . If you always listen for what you don’t agree with in order to defend yourself and correct the facts, it will do harm to both sides. Instead, you should keep an open mind and listen with an aim to understand the other person. ___20___ . An apology isn’t the only chance you ever get to address the existing issue. The apology is also the chance to establish the ground for future communication. When done with attention and care, an apology can be a channel for greater understanding and deeper connection. A. Be real B. Drop your defenses C. Here are some tips to offer an apology D. You’ve made the apology all about you E. A good apology is a beginning, not an end F. A sincere apology does not include ifs or buts G. It’s not “I’m sorry” that fixes the problem, but your deeds 【答案】16. C 17. D 18. F 19. B 20. E 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一些道歉的技巧。 【16题详解】 根据前句“A good and responsible apology can meet the moment and improve our relationships.(一个好、负责任的道歉可以适时地改善我们的关系)”及下文关于“一些道歉技巧”的内容可知,这里为承上启下句,介绍道歉的技巧。所以C“Here are some tips to offer an apology(下面是一些道歉的技巧)”符合上下文语境。故选C。 【17题详解】 根据前句“Over-apologizing is not only annoying — it affects the flow of the conversation and shifts the focus away from the person who needs to be paid attention to. (过度道歉不仅让人恼火,还会影响谈话的进行,把注意力从需要关注的人身上转移开)”可知,作者在讲过度道歉的危害,建议不要过度道歉,过度道歉会把道歉的重心从被道歉人(被关注人)身上移开,这样会造成道歉的关注点(重心)不是别人而是你自己,该空与上文因果关系,所以D“You’ve made the apology all about you (你让道歉的重心全是围绕你)”承接上文讲过度道歉的危害。故选D。 【18题详解】 根据小标题“No ifs or buts.(没有“如果”或“但是”)”和后句““But” almost always means a criticism, or an excuse. (“但是”几乎总是意味着批评或借口)”可知,道歉时,不要使用“如果”或“但是”。所以F“A sincere apology does not include ifs or buts (真诚的道歉不包括“如果”和“但是”)”符合上下文语境。故选F。 【19题详解】 根据下文“If you always listen for what you don’t agree with in order to defend yourself and correct the facts, it will do harm to both sides. (如果你总是倾听你不同意的东西,以捍卫自己和纠正事实,这将对双方都有害)”可知,本段主要介绍道歉的时候要放下自己的防御。所以B“Drop your defenses (放下你的防御)”符合上下文语境。故选B。 【20题详解】 根据后文“An apology isn’t the only chance you ever get to address the existing issue. The apology is also the chance to establish the ground for future communication. (道歉并不是解决现有问题的唯一机会。道歉也是为今后的沟通奠定基础的机会)”可知,好的道歉只是一个开始,为以后的沟通奠定基础。所以E“A good apology is a beginning, not an end (一个好的道歉是一个开始,而不是结束)”符合上下文语境。故选E。 第三部分 语言运用(共三节,满分45分) 第一节(共20小题;每小题1分,满分20分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 For most people, having things stolen feels like an offence. You can't walk back. " I begged. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】A wave of guilt swept over me and I had to admit the fact that I had gone to the movies and that was the real reason why I was late .Dad listened carefully as a sadness passed through him,“I'm angry, not with you but with myself. You see. I realize that I have failed as a father if after all these years you feel that you have to lie to me. I have failed because I have brought up a son who cannot even tell the truth to his own father. I'm going to walk home now and think where I have gone wrong all these years”. But father, it's exactly eighteen miles home from here , and it's dark. You can't walk back. " I begged .My protests, my apologies and the rest of my words were useless. I had let my father down. and I was about to learn one of the most painful lessons of my life. Dad began walking along the dusty roads. I quickly jumped in the car and followed behind. I apologized all the way, telling him how sorry I was, but he simply ignored me. For 18 miles he kept walking. Seeing my father in so much pain was the most awful experience that I have ever faced. However it was also the most successful lesson. I apologized all the way, telling him how sorry I was, but he simply ignored me,Dad listened carefully as a sadness passed through him. as引导的状语从句,I realize that I have failed as a father if after all these years you feel that you have to lie to me.that引导的宾语从句。 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
