His sister is 14-year-old Della, who has a disease that makes her unable to speak. In 2020, Archer was searching online for an app that might help Della express her needs, wants, likes and dislikes. “It’s always been my dream to be able to communicate with her the way I would with anybody else,” he said. But the result was upsetting. The related apps were greatly expensive, and didn’t offer everything he was looking for. So he decided to make his own app, completely open and free. That’s how Freespeech was born. Freespeech helps people communicate by enabling them to press buttons that stand for words. Users can string (把……连在一起) together sentences by pressing many buttons in order. The app opens up a whole new world of communication for people who are unable to talk. “It was different growing up with a brother or sister that you couldn’t talk with,” Archer explained. “For the first time I was able to communicate with my sister because of this app, kind of like I would communicate with anybody else. It was kind of a special moment that I had never experienced before.” However, Freespeech app still had some disadvantages, so Archer turned to other programmers for help by making the source code (源代码) public. He first put it on TikTok, and the reaction was so positive that he shared it on GitHub, where experienced programmers helped upgrade it. Archer says even if Freespeech only helps one person, his sister, all the time and effort he put in was worthwhile. Somehow, the public have a feeling that Archer’s app is going to help far more than just one person! 4. What made Archer create Freespeech? A. His eagerness to cure Della. B. His sister’s repeated request. C. His wish to communicate with Della. D. His curiosity about online apps. 5. What can we learn about Freespeech? A. It is easy to use. B. It has been widely used. C. It changes the way of communication. D. It improves Archer’s relationship with Della. 6. How did Archer feel when using Freespeech at first? A. Proud. B. Doubtful. C. Nervous. D. Excited. 7. Why did Archer make Preespech source code public? A. To show his app is practical. B. To improve his Freespeech app. C. To recommend others to use his app. D. To inspire other programmers to create apps. C Whether in person or online, praising someone for their weight loss or body shape can seem like a good comment. But experts say we can learn something from a famous actor’s recent post about body comments: stop making them. In the post, the actor asked his followers to stop making comments about his body, whether they be positive or negative. “I know you mean well but I kindly ask that you should not comment on my body good or bad. I was to politely let you know it’s not helpful and doesn’t feel good.” he wrote. While it’s easy to understand how negative comments can be hurtful, praise can also be harmful, explains Chelsea Kronengold, a communication expert. “Commenting on someone’s body appearance shows the message that people are only as much as their body, and that they should be judged by how they appear in the world.” Another reason to stop these comments is that you don’t know what anyone is going through, Kronengold adds. For example, you may praise someone by commenting on their weight loss, but you don’t know if that change is because of something like disordered eating, illness, or any number of other reasons that are not positive. Your comments might aggravate the situations, as people might think they have to look in a certain way to be acceptable. Instead of commenting on someone’s body appearance, Krunengold suggests paying attention to somebody: character, values and what they contribute to the world. That way, we’re focusing on people being worthy because of who they are, not what they look like. Another idea is using action words instead of appearance words. For example. “You look so happy when you’re doing that” or “I wish I could join you in that activity”. By making this change, you’re moving from an external (外部的) sort of comment to communicating with them. It doesn’t have a thing to do with whether their body is acceptable or not. 8. How does the actor feel about positive comments about his body? A. Pleased. B. Peaceful. C. Puzzled. D. Uncomfortable. 9. What does Kronengold think comments about someone’s body suggest? A. One’s worth depends on one’s appearance. B. Judging by appearance is quite common. C. People should improve their appearance. D. One’s body is as important as one’s character. 10. What does the underlined word “aggravate” in Paragraph 4 mean? A. Cause. B. Discuss. C. Review. D. Worsen. 11. What is the text mainly meant to do? A. Put forward a suggestion. B. Express a personal attitude. C. Report a scientific discovery. D. Introduce a social problem. D Dogs living with other dogs often bark (吠叫) more than those in single-dog homes when their owners leave home for a few hours — and they whine (哀鸣) and howl (嚎叫) just as much. “The discovery is opposite to a popular belief that dogs that are separated from their owners but are in the company of other dogs are not that alone.” says Gerrit Stephan at the Academy for Animal Naturopathy in Switzerland. In fact, because one dog barking can set off barking in other dogs, people attempting to calm separation anxiety in their first dog by getting a second one might make the situation worse. he says. Stephan and his workmates looked at videos of 32 dogs living alone and 45 dogs living with others, all of whom were left in the house. They found most of the time, the dogs lay quietly relaxing in their preferred places. Activity, like sitting or standing still, or raising their head, took up 22% of their time, and the animals were actively moving around for less than 2% of the time. However, those in multi-dog homes showed a striking difference in activity compared with those in single-dog homes, with more walking around, barking, whining and howling. says Stephan. There was almost no dog-to-dog activity, like playing with each other. These signs of anxiety were greatest in the first hour after the owners left, but then seemed to reduce over time. “It’s wrong that a dog with separation-related anxiety will feel better if another dog is added to the household,” says Natalie Waran at Eastern Institute of Technology in New Zealand, who didn’t take part in the project “This doesn’t address the underlying (潜在的) problem for the dog with separation anxiety, and it often results in another dog showing anxious behavior. The key is to understand the causes of the problem behavior to be able to manage or treat it effectively.” 12. What should be a wrong opinion? A. A dog may bark more often when in groups. B. A dog suffers separation anxiety sometimes. C. A dog’s separation anxiety is hard to deal with. D. A dog feels less anxious when with another one. 13. How did the dogs respond on the whole when their owners were away? A. They slept only for a short time. B. They were not very active C. They barked to go out. D. They played alone. 14. What did Natalie Waran ask people to do? A. Spend more time staying together with their dogs. B. Observe if their dogs have some other problem behavior. C. Find out the real cause of their dogs’ anxiety. D. Treat their dogs’ anxiety as early as possible. 15. What is the best title for the text? A. Separation anxiety influences dogs in multi-dog homes more B. Separation anxiety is more common among dogs than thought C. Dogs show more rude behavior when alone D. Dogs do not like staying at home alone Different people may find different learning methods work best for them. C His wish to communicate with Della. C 5. A 6. D 7. 根据第二段中的“It’s always been my dream to be able to communicate with her the way I would with anybody else(我一直梦想着能像和别人交流一样和她交流)”和第三段中的“The related apps were greatly expensive, and didn’t offer everything he was looking for. So he decided to make his own app, completely open and free.(相关的应用程序非常昂贵,并没有提供他想要的一切。所以他决定制作自己的应用,完全开放和免费)”可知,Archer Calder开发app是为了和妹妹进行交流。故选C。 【5题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段中的“Users can string (把……连在一起) together sentences by pressing many buttons in order. The app opens up a whole new world of communication for people who are unable to talk.(用户可以按顺序按多个按钮将句子串起来。这款应用程序为无法说话的人打开了一个全新的交流世界)”可知,人们只需通过有序地按很多按钮把句子串起来就可以交流,因此这款app操作起来很简单。故选A。 根据第五段中的“For the first time I was able to communicate with my sister because of this app, kind of like I would communicate with anybody else. It was kind of a special moment that I had never experienced before.(因为这个应用程序,我第一次能够和我妹妹交流,就像我和其他人交流一样。这是一个我从未经历过的特殊时刻)”可知,初次使用app让Archer Calder很兴奋。故选D。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中的“However, Freespeech app still had some disadvantages, so Archer turned to other programmers for help by making the source code (源代码) public. He first put it on TikTok, and the reaction was so positive that he shared it on GitHub, where experienced programmers helped upgrade it.(然而,Freespeech应用程序仍然有一些缺点,所以Archer转向其他程序员寻求帮助,将源代码公开。他首先把它放在TikTok上,反应非常积极,于是他在GitHub上分享了它,经验丰富的程序员帮助升级了它)”可知,Archer Calder把源代码发到网上是为了改进自己开发的app。故选B。 C Whether in person or online, praising someone for their weight loss or body shape can seem like a good comment. D 9. A 10. D 11. 根据第二段中的“I know you mean well but I kindly ask that you should not comment on my body good or bad. I was to politely let you know it’s not helpful and doesn’t feel good.(我知道你是好意,但我恳请你不要评论我的体形好或坏。我要礼貌地告诉你,这没有帮助,也不舒服。)”可知,关于身体的评论,无论好坏,都会令这位演员感到不舒服。故选D。 【9题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Commenting on someone’s body appearance shows the message that people are only as much as their body, and that they should be judged by how they appear in the world.(评论别人的外表传达了这样的信息:一个人的价值取决于他的身体,人们应该根据他在这个世界上的形象来评判他。)” 故选A。 根据第四段中的“For example, you may praise someone by commenting on their weight loss, but you don’t know if that change is because of something like disordered eating, illness, or any number of other reasons that are not positive.(例如,你可能会通过评论某人的体重减轻来表扬他,但你不知道这种改变是由于饮食失调、疾病还是其他任何不积极的原因。)” 综合全文内容,特别是第一段中的“But experts say we can learn something from a famous actor’s recent post about body comments: stop making them.(但专家表示,我们可以从一位著名演员最近发布的关于身体评论的帖子中学到一些东西:停止评论。)” A。 D Dogs living with other dogs often bark (吠叫) more than those in single-dog homes when their owners leave home for a few hours — and they whine (哀鸣) and howl (嚎叫) just as much. A A dog may bark more often when in groups. Dogs do not like staying at home alone 【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. Activity, like sitting or standing still, or raising their head, took up 22% of their time, and the animals were actively moving around for less than 2% of the time.(他们发现,大多数时候,狗安静地躺在它们喜欢的地方放松。 根据最后一段中的“The key is to understand the causes of the problem behavior to be able to manage or treat it effectively.(关键是要了解问题行为的原因,以便能够有效地管理或治疗它)”可知,Natalie Waran认为人们应该找到狗感到焦虑的真正原因。 根据全文内容,结合第一段“Dogs living with other dogs often bark (吠叫) more than those in single-dog homes when their owners leave home for a few hours — and they whine (哀鸣) and howl (嚎叫) just as much.(和其他狗一起生活的狗在主人离开家几个小时后,通常会比那些单独生活的狗吠得更厉害,而且它们也会哀鸣和嚎叫)”可知,文章主要讲研究者们发现,当主人离开家后,独自在家的狗会表现出分离焦虑感,而有同类作伴的狗则表现出更强烈的分离焦虑感。 Different people may find different learning methods work best for them.
