Recycling Electronic Waste
When Alex Lin was 11 years old,he read an alarming article in the newspaper which said that people were burying old computers in backyards, throwing TVs into streams, and dumping(丢弃) cellphones in the garbage. This was dangerous because ewaste contains harmful chemicals that can leak into the environment, getting into crops, animals, water supplies—and people.
Alex was really worried and decided to make it next project for WIN—the Westerly Innovations Network.Alex and six of his friends had formed this organization to help solve community problems two years before.
But what could they do about this project with ewaste? The team spent several weeks gathering information about the harmful chemicals in ewaste and their effects on humans. They learned how to dispose(处置) of ewaste properly and how it could be recycled. Then, they sent out a survey and found only one in eight knew what ewaste was,let alone how to properly dispose of it.
Alex and his friends went into action. They advertised in the local newspaper and distributed notices to students, asking residents to bring their unwanted electronics to the school parking lot.The drive lasted two days, and they collected over 9,500 kilograms of ewaste.
The next step was to set up a longterm ewaste dropoff center for the town. After some research, they'd learned that reusing is the best way to deal with electronic devices and it is seven times more efficient than recycling. So,they began learning to refurbish(翻新) computers themselves and distributed them to students who didn't have their own.In this way, they could help students in the area and protect the environment at the same time.
For a lasting solution to ewaste, the dropoff center wasn't enough.Laws would have to be passed. In 2016,WIN helped push for an ewaste bill in their town, which required companies that manufactured or sold electronics to take back ewaste. The bill clearly forbids the dumping of ewaste.
Because of the work of WIN,more and more people, like Alex and his team, are getting the message about safe disposal of ewaste. As Alex says,“Today's technology should not become tomorrow's harmful garbage.”
4.What was Alex's worry after he read the article?
A.The littering of ewaste.
B.The recycling of plastic.
C.The change of environment.
D.The overuse of old computers.
5.What did Alex do to start the project?

UNIT 3 限时规范练(B)
(限时30分钟)
Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
If humans do want to set up communities on the moon or other planets, what will they eat? A new test has begun to see if meat cells can grow.
Growing meat from cells even on Earth isn't easy.Cells from a cow(though it could be any animal) are fed the things they need to grow, like amino acids and carbohydrate. The cells multiply until muscle tissue forms, and eventually becomes meat that you can eat. This process is called “cultivation(培养)”.The meat is grown in tanks that look more like what you'd find in a brewery than a farm yard. The lifecycle of an animal raised for meat—birth, life and kill—is completely ignored.
“Animal cells grow slowly,” says David Humbird,a chemical engineer.“If bacteria were to get into the cultivation,it would grow much faster from animal cells and it will just take over so you aren't making the animal cells anymore. You are making bacteria. And you have to throw it away,” says Mr. Humbird.“Those cells that are themselves grown on eatable material are going to be sugar, amino acids and water. And the caloric value of the cells that you make will always be less than that.At the best case you could probably recover 25% of the calorie and eat them as food.So the question is,why would you drag all those calories into space just to waste 75% of them?”
Karen Nyberg is a former astronaut. She says food plays a crucial role in space missions.“Food like powdered milk and that sort of thing comes as a regular source for astronauts, and meat produced in space is just something we don't have.So anything like that makes us feel great and eases our pressure.” For Ms. Nyberg, fresh food and vegetables are vital if humans are expected to be away from Earth for years at a time.
Certainly if humanity is serious about putting people on Mars, how to feed astronauts with nutrientrich food that doesn't spoil—and tastes good—is an important and difficult mystery.
1.What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.The taste of labgrown meat.
B.The reasons for growing meat in space.
C.The potential benefits of growing meat.
D.The process of growing meat from cow cells.
2.What is David Humbird's attitude toward growing meat in space?
A.Optimistic. B.Supportive.
C.Disapproving. D.Indifferent.
3.What can we infer from what Karen said?
A.Eating is always a problem for astronauts.
B.Food tastes much better in space than on Earth.
C.Growing meat does good to astronauts' mental health.
D.Astronauts suffer from mental illnesses after long space tasks.
4.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.Can Meat Be Grown in Space?
B.Can Astronauts Enjoy Meat in Space?
C.Can Meat in Space Be Delicious to Eat?
D.Can Labgrown Meat Help Tackle Climate?

B
Clothes were once used until they fell apart, repaired and sewed to be reused, ending their lives as dishcloths. Not today.Clothing, footwear and upholstered furniture are increasingly frequently bought, thrown away and replaced with new fashions, which are themselves soon abandoned and replaced.
“Fast fashion” is so called partly because the fashion industry now releases new lines every week, when historically this happened four times a year.Today, fashion brands(品牌) produce almost twice the amount of clothing that they did in 2000.But incredibly, more than 50 billion clothes are deserted within a year of being made.
The trend is having an astonishing environmental impact.Take water. The fashion industry, one of the world's largest users of water, consumes anywhere from 20 trillion to 200 trillion litres every year.Besides, plastic fibres are released when we wash polyester(聚酯纤维) and other polymerbased textiles(纺织物),and make up between 20% and 35% of the microplastics choking the oceans.Added to this are specific chemicals used to make fabrics dirt resistant and the pesticides required to protect crops such as cotton.
Change is badly needed, but will require the fashion industry to work harder to embrace more of what is known as the circular economy. That will involve at least two things: refocusing on making things that last, and so encouraging reuse; and more rapidly expanding the technologies for sustainable manufacturing(制造) processes, especially recycling. There is work to be done for researchers on improving and expanding textiles recycling. Most used textiles go to landfill(废物填埋场),in part because there are relatively few systems that collect, recycle and reuse materials.Such recycling requires the manual separation of fibres,as well as buttons and zips.Different fibres are not easy to identify by eye,and overall such manual processes are timeconsuming.Machinery is being developed that can help.Technologies also exist to recycle used fibres chemically and to create highquality fibres that can be reused in clothing. But these are nowhere near the scale(规模)needed.Another challenge for researchers is to work out how to get consumers and manufacturers to change their behaviour.
Small steps are good, but big changes are needed. The shameful environmental cost of a new cupboard needs to be tackled immediately,at scale, with style.
5.What are the first two paragraphs mainly about?
A.Clothes should be used until they fall apart.
B.Fashion brands are replaced with new ones frequently.
C.Fast fashion leads to a significant increase in fashion waste.
D.Fashion brands produce twice more clothing than necessary.
6.According to the author, what does the circular economy focus on?
A.Improving the production of natural textiles.
B.Studying how fast fashion affects the environment.
C.Releasing new lines four times a year instead of every week.
D.Making durable things and expanding the technologies for recycling.
7.What can you infer from the passage?
A.Consumers are fond of chemically recycled fibres.
B.Systems that collect, recycle and reuse are insufficient.
C.Manual separation of fibres is preferred by manufacturers.
D.Environment damage is mainly caused by using chemicals.
8.What does the author think of the future of fashion industry?
A.Big changes are needed to follow fashion styles.
B.Huge steps should be taken for the needs of consumers.
C.More should be done to deal with the heavy environmental cost.
D.Consumers and manufacturers will change their behaviour immediately.

6.D [解析]细节理解题。根据第四段中的“That will involve at least two things: refocusing on making things that last, and so encouraging reuse; and more rapidly expanding the technologies for sustainable manufacturing processes, especially recycling.”可知,循环经济注重的是制造耐用的物品,从而鼓励重复使用;并更迅速地推广可持续制造工艺技术。故选D。
7.B [解析]细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中的“Most used textiles go to landfill,in part because there are relatively few systems that collect, recycle and reuse materials.”
Going on holiday doesn't have to be bad for the environment, and there are still plenty of ways in which you can have a muchdeserved break without harming the environment.
Forget planes.
While most forms of transport produce carbon dioxide, one of the gases responsible for global warming, planes have a massive carbon footprint because of the huge number of miles they travel.1.______ There's so much to see and do in the U.K.,yet most of us overlook the endless possibilities. There's the unparalleled beauty of the Cornish coast and the Peak and Lake District.Enjoy the history of a stunning Welsh castle, try boating on the Norfolk Broads or riding the “Hogwarts Express” across Scotland.Or try taking the train over to Europe—within six hours of London are Amsterdam's famous art galleries.Alternatively, take the car to Cannes in just over half a day or the ferry to Scandinavia for holidays you'd normally only dream of.
2.______
Hotels can be huge producers of greenhouse gases—think about the water that's wasted, all the bathroom products thrown out half used and all the buffet food that goes uneaten. So choose an ecofriendly option instead.Camping and a home stay—where you live with a family in their own home—are two of the best options. But if you insist on staying in the hotel, some of the things to look out for are hotels made from sustainable materials, which are energy efficient or use their own solar energy and that recycle.3.______
Pack with care.
The less you take, the lighter your carbon footprint, because the heavier your luggage is,the more fuel it takes to carry. So pack light and responsibly.4.______ All of their bottles, from shampoo and conditioner to body wash and moisturizer, are now made from recycled plastic that can be repurposed again and again so no new plastic is produced. And their iconic soap bars now also come in plasticfree packaging.
Buy gifts responsibly.
Bringing back gifts for friends and loved ones is part of the fun of a holiday.5.______ Avoid anything plastic,or if it is plastic, make sure it is 100% recyclable, and make sure your friends will love whatever you give them so it isn't just thrown in the bin headed for landfill.Try to buy presents made by local craftsmen, which will benefit the community and help their economy. And don't bring back anything made from shells, corals or animal products, because you don't know if they're from sustainable sources.
A.Consider living in an ecofriendly hotel.
B.Think about ecofriendly accommodation.
C.But make sure you choose items carefully.
D.Some also have planting programs to attract wildlife.
E.Why not skip flying in favor of a holiday closer to home?
F.Rather than lie on a beach, why not help our precious planet when you're away?
G.Take environmentally friendly products with you, such as products from a household company.

My father and I disagreed about my curfew(宵禁).He would say I had to be in by 9:30 on weekdays, and 11:00 on weekends, and there was no exception. One day,I took courage to first show my opinion on my curfew.I told him it made me feel like a junior high school kid.He explained that though a curfew might sound like a restriction,it was really about people looking out for one another.
The very next Friday after that exchange,my dad and I had tickets to see our own town's professional football game.On that day he was driving his car to a nearby city to meet some major clients and told me that his getting home and our leaving for the game would be tight.
To make sure we could move off the moment he came back,I got everything prepared. When half an hour had passed from the time when he said he would be home,I understood that he was a little late. But then, nearly a whole hour passed.I was getting upset. We were going to miss the kickoff! And why hadn't he phoned me and let me know he was going to be really late? As I anxiously stepped the floor, another half hour passed. That was when I got really angry. How inconsiderate my father was! We were going to miss the whole game! However, when another half an hour passed,my anger turned to fear. What if something terrible had happened to my dad, like he had a sudden heart attack or was caught in an accident,or something else? I began to get really worried, feeling like sitting on pins and needles.I had already called his cellphone about ten times, but there was no answer.

Paragraph 1:
I was beside myself with extreme anxieties, assuming the worst had happened. Suddenly, the phone rang,I rushed to the phone and picked the receiver up,it was my dad. From the other end of the phone came my father's voice. He said breathlessly,“Son,I am so sorry about the football game, but ...there was a terrible accident ... on the freeway coming home, and I stopped to help the injured and ended up going to the hospital.I left my phone in the car,so I couldn't call you until now.”
Paragraph 2:
The heavy stone in my heart finally fell to the ground.I was so relieved to hear from my father.Having learnt that he was safe,I burst into tears. It was at that moment that I had a full understanding of the importance of a curfew.Since then,I have been insisting on checking in! For me,it's about knowing that someone I love is safe.It is also one more proof of my father's loving me as much as he does.
