A Rachel Hore's fascinating novels move between the past and the present. Her latest The House on Bellevue Gardens is set in London now and in the early 1960s. Bestselling author Rachel Hore's previous novels include The Glass Painter's Daughter, which was shortlisted(入围) for the 2010 Romantic Novel of the Year award, and A Gathering Storm, which was shortlisted for the 2012 Historical Novel of the Year award. Here, she shares three books that made an impact on her life. Orlando by Virginia Woolf Reading Orlando for the first time in my late teens gave me a wonderful sense of freedom and the possibilities that a life full of books can offer.Forever young,Orlando possesses “the strength of a man and a woman's grace”. He lives through four centuries and has many disguises; sometimes he even changes his gender. It was an excellent literary work through history that excited and inspired me. Flight Behaviour by Barbara Kingsolver I've read many of Barbara Kingsolver's novels, including her wellknown The Poisonwood Bible, admiring how easily she writes about the power and beauty of the natural world,of which humanity is a dependent part. I particularly love Flight Behaviour because she engages the reader easily with an ambitious subject for fiction—climate change. Her story makes us all care about what we are doing to our world. The Hawk in the Rain by Ted Hughes We were given The Thought Fox to read at school and I was so deeply impressed with its central image of the fox in the snow that I spent that week's money on the book it appears in.I read and reread it and was amazed! I loved the writer's technique of description,as well as the energy, the violence and the sensuousness(敏感) of those poems. Everyone should have their “discovery of poetry” moment, and mine was Ted Hughes. 1.Which of the following books was shortlisted for the 2012 Historical Novel of the Year award? A.The House on Bellevue Gardens. B.The Glass Painter's Daughter. C.A Gathering Storm. D.Flight Behaviour. 2.Which book did Rachel Hore read when she was in her late teens? A.Flight Behaviour. B.Orlando. C.The Poisonwood Bible. D.The Hawk in the Rain. 3.For what does Rachel Hore admire Barbara Kingsolver? A.The topic of her novel. B.How she writes about the power and beauty of the natural world. C.How her novels excite and inspire readers. D.Her technique of description. 根据Orlando部分中的“Reading Orlando for the first time in my late teens gave me a wonderful sense of freedom and the possibilities that a life full of books can offer.(十几岁时第一次读到《奥兰多》,让我感受到了自由的美好,也感受到了充满书香的生活所能带来的可能性。)” 根据Flight Behaviour部分中的“I've read many of Barbara Kingsolver's novels, including her wellknown The Poisonwood Bible, admiring how easily she writes about the power and beauty of the natural world,of which humanity is a dependent part.(我读过Barbara Kingsolver的很多小说,包括她著名的《毒木圣经》,很欣赏她如此轻松地描写了自然界的力量和美丽,而人类是大自然的一部分。)” B。 B Most kids can walk into a library or bookstore and find hundreds of books to read. But it's not that simple for kids who are blind. They read in a different way.Jenny Lee and other braille(盲文) transcribers take the printed words of a book and change them into a code of raised dots.Blind people can read these dots with their fingers. To know what braille feels like, take a ballpoint pen and press hard onto a piece of paper. Now turn the paper over and touch the raised dot made by the pen point. When Lee first saw the dots of the braille alphabet, she wondered if she'd ever be able to read and write them easily. She took a class and practised hard for about six months before she passed the final exam:she had to convert 35 pages of a book into braille.Today,Lee works for a publisher. One of her jobs is to change children's books into braille. To do this,Lee first types the story into a computer and then uses a computer programme to translate it into the braille code.Next, she looks over the translation several times to make sure it's mistakefree. After that,a copy of the braille story is printed with a special printer. Then Lee and a proofreader work together to find and correct any mistakes. When a book is ready, many copies of it are printed.Afterwards, some are sold through websites and others are sent to libraries. Sometimes, going over a story again and again gets tiring. That's when Lee takes a break.Several of Jenny Lee's coworkers, who are blind, use guide dogs. When the animals aren't working,Lee likes spending a few minutes with them.To her, playing with dogs “is always a pickmeup in the middle of the day”. “I love this mission,”Lee says.“Through my brain power and my fingers,I am putting the dots into some kids' hands.” 4.How does the writer explain what braille feels like? A.By explaining what braille words look like. B.By describing how blind people read books. C.By asking readers to experience it themselves. D.By giving examples of different braille words. 5.What was Lee's first reaction to braille? A.She was excited to get a new skill. B.She was amazed at the clever idea. C.She realised she could teach it herself. D.She believed it would be difficult to learn. 6.What does the underlined word “pickmeup”in Paragraph 4 most probably mean? A.A discussion to release work stress. B.Something to improve one's appetite. C.Something to help restore one's energy. D.A free ride accompanied with a guide dog. 7.What does Lee think of her job? A.Profitable and hopeful. B.Tiring but meaningful. C.Relaxing and helpful. D.Boring but challenging. 根据第一段中的“To know what braille feels like ...made by the pen point.” 根据第二段中的“When Lee first saw the dots of the braille alphabet, she wondered if she'd ever be able to read and write them easily.” 根据倒数第二段中的“Sometimes, going over a story again and again gets tiring. That's when Lee takes a break.”以及“When the animals aren't working,Lee likes spending a few minutes with them.” 根据倒数第二段中的“Sometimes, going over a story again and again gets tiring.”以及最后一段中的“Through my brain power and my fingers,I am putting the dots into some kids' hands.” I love studying history, travelling to new places and seeing the beautiful sights, immersing(使沉浸) myself into the local __1__. And why does he have his own fruit?” Surprisingly,“jackfruit” isn't a person's name at all.The fruit's name originally comes from the southern Indian word chakka pazham, with India thought to be the fruit's place of origin.Portuguese explorers who journeyed to this region went on to call it jack, which leads us to the current English name of jackfruit, according to National Public Radio(NPR).Unfortunately,no one called Jack has been proven to be involved at any point in this process. There is another food, however, that was directly named after a person—the sandwich. In the 18th century, playing card games late into the night became fashionable in British high society.John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, started the habit of ordering pieces of cold beef between two pieces of bread in order to get a latenight snack without having to leave the gaming table or use a knife and fork. This newlycreated snack kept hands clean so card players could continue on without dirtying their cards. The midnight snack quickly became popular among everyday people, and before long everyone was making their own sandwiches. That is how the sandwich was invented and got its name. Away from the world of food, there are more examples of names inspired by people.Long johns, the warm trousers that keep us warm in winter, are said to have been named after the US boxer John L.Sullivan who took to wearing a similar type of garment in the ring(圆形场地). There are many other interesting etymologies(词源) in the English language like these. So the next time you find an interesting name, why not explore its history too? 1.What does the underlined word “overwhelmed” in the first paragraph probably mean? A.Puzzled. B.Excited. C.Worried. D.Annoyed. 2.Where does the jack fruit's name come from? A.A place in India. B.An Indian word. C.A Portuguese explorer. C.It was first popular among the UK's middle class. D.It was created for the convenience of playing cards. 4.What is the author's purpose in writing this article? A.To raise readers' interest in etymology. B.To introduce things named after people. C.To stress the importance of learning history. D.To explain the effects of people's names on food. 根据画线词后文“Who is Jack?
