From the study, exercising about three times a week for at least four months is how much people need to obtain the benefits in episodic memory.Episodic memory, which is supported by a part of the brain that's known to benefit from exercise,is the kind that deals with events that happened to you in the past. It's also one of the first to decline with age. Exercise that gets the heart pumping has shown promise in increasing brain health, and experiments in mice show that it improves memory—but studies looking at the same link in humans have come out mixed. During the research, the team read 1,279 studies carefully, eventually narrowing them down to just 36 that met specific criteria(标准).Then they used specialized software and no small number of Excel spreadsheets to transform the data into a form where the different studies could be directly compared. That work paid off when they found that pooling together those 36 studies was enough to show that for older adults:exercise can indeed benefit their memory. Past analyses looking at connections between exercise and memory didn't find one,but the team took several extra steps to give them the best chance of finding a link if one did exist. They limited their search to particular groups and age ranges as well as a specific kind of strict experimental setup.Another key was focusing specifically on episodic memory. With that much larger pool of participants, the team was able to show a link between exercise and episodic memory. The team also found the greatest effects of exercise in those who hadn't yet experienced any cognitive(认知的) decline. 1.What can we learn about “episodic memory”? A.It benefits from regular exercise. B.It has nothing to do with age. C.It deals with things happening now. D.It is connected with the whole brain. 2.How did the team get their study result? A.By carrying out 1,279 studies. B.By making specific criteria. C.By doing experiments in mice. D.By comparing different studies. 3.What can we infer from the last two paragraphs? A.The team got the findings by chance. B.The participants were chosen from all ages. C.The study focused on all kinds of memories. D.People without cognitive decline benefit most from exercise. 4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A.Benefits from Regular Exercise B.Advice on How to Exercise for the Old C.Studies Find Ways to Improve Memories D.Exercise Helps the Older Keep Memories 【语篇解读】本文是一篇说明文。 根据第二段中的“From the study, exercising about three times a week for at least four months is how much people need to obtain the benefits in episodic memory.” 故选A。 根据第四段中的“During the research, the team read 1,279 studies carefully ...the different studies could be directly compared.” 根据最后一段中的“The team also found the greatest effects of exercise in those who hadn't yet experienced any cognitive decline.” D。 B Do you ever get restless if you haven't checked your phone for a few minutes? If so,you're not alone.Studies show that people these days check their phones once every four minutes on average! Some of this usage may be related to work. However, much of it is because many apps—particularly social media apps—use “clever techniques” to keep us coming back for more. One of such techniques is to push notifications. You're getting on with your work or something else when—ping!—a notification pops up on your screen, informing you that a friend has posted something new or commented on your post.It may seem like a small interruption, but it often is enough to break your concentration and make you go back to your phone again. Another method is to make a game of the inapp experience by setting up a competitive goal element. Some apps, for example, use streaks(连续纪录),which count the number of days you have used the app.If you keep a streak going, you might get a medal or some other rewards. Therefore, keeping one's streak alive becomes a major reason to return to the app again and again. Once you've opened an app,its goal is now to get you continue using it.Messaging apps use a simple but effective trick(伎俩) to keep you engaged even when you're not writing anything.Have you ever noticed that in some apps, three dots ( ...) appear to let you know your friend is typing a reply? This trick is designed specifically to create your expectation or curiosity. You wonder what your friend is going to say.Well, you'll have to keep waiting and see. While using social media apps is certainly fun, becoming addicted definitely isn't.Now that you know some tricks used by these apps' designers, you'll be better equipped to reduce their influence and keep a healthier relationship with your phone. 5.How does the author introduce the topic in Paragraph 1? A.By raising a question. B.By quoting a saying. C.By making a comparison. D.By doing an experiment. 6.How many “clever techniques” are mentioned in the text? A.Two. B.Three. C.Four. D.Five. 7.What is special about an app using streaks? A.Ongoing pings will inform you of new posts. B.Competitive games will greatly discourage you. C.Everyday use of the app might earn you a medal. D.Appearance of three dots might disturb your typing. 8.What is the best title for the text? A.Can People Break Their Addition to Games? B.Could Technology Further Improve Phones? C.The Social Media Apps That Waste Your Time D.The Tricks That Keep You Glued to Your Phone 【语篇解读】本文是一篇说明文。 根据第一段中的“Do you ever get restless if you haven't checked your phone for a few minutes?” 故选A。 根据第二段中的“One of such techniques is to push notifications.”、第三段中的“Another method is to make a game of the inapp experience by setting up a competitive goal element.”以及倒数第二段中的“Messaging apps use a simple but effective trick to keep you engaged even when you're not writing anything.” 根据第三段中的“Some apps, for example, use streaks, which count the number of days you have used the app.If you keep a streak going, you might get a medal or some other rewards.” 根据第一段中的“However, much of it is because many apps—particularly social media apps—use ‘clever techniques’ to keep us coming back for more.”、第二段中的“One of such techniques is to push notifications”、第三段中的“Another method is to make a game of the inapp experience by setting up a competitive goal element.” Desertification, the process by which fertile(肥沃的) land becomes desert, has severe impacts on food production and is worsened by climate change.1.______ Africa's Great Green Wall is a project to build an 8,000kilometrelong forest across 11 of the continent's countries. The project is meant to contain the growing Sahara Desert and fight climate change.2.______ They include limited political support, lack of money, weak organizational structures, and not enough consideration for the environment.Just 4 million hectares(公顷) of land have been turned into forest since work on the Green Wall began 15 years ago.3.______ First proposed in 2005,the project aims to plant a forest from Senegal on the Atlantic Ocean in western Africa to Eritrea,Ethiopia and Djibouti in the east.4.______ It could also reduce levels of climaterelated migration in the area and capture hundreds of millions of tons of carbon dioxide from the air.Several countries have struggled to keep up with the demands of the project. 5.______ Eritrea,Ethiopia, and Sudan have all expanded their efforts.Ethiopia is producing 5.5 billion seedlings leading to thousands of hectares of restored land.Efforts in Eritrea and Sudan have also resulted in nearly 140,000 hectares of newly planted forest. The U.N.desertification agency says the project will need to plant an average of 8.2 million hectares yearly to reach its goal of 100 million hectares by 2030.
