Some people believe that the daughter is the father’s lover. But my experience has taught me in a different way. For a long time, in my eyes, he was a man of few words, tall but thin and nothing else.
When I was in primary school, my father was never there to pick me up, and he never came to any of my parent-teacher meeting. He was always busy with his work. When I was in middle school, my head was badly hurt in a PE class. During my operation (手术), my father was not in the hospital with me. This hurt me most. Because of this, I thought my father as a cold blooded man who did not care about me at all.
But things seemed different at my high school graduation ceremony (毕业典礼), where I was going to give a speech (演讲). My father, once again, told me he was busy. Although he didn’t come to my school, I was glad that my speech went well. After the ceremony was over and I was going to leave, I suddenly noticed my father sitting in a corner of the hall. I was so surprised and touched to see him. “Well done,” he said. Hearing what he said, I knew my father’s love for me was always there. Although he didn’t say it out often, he truly cared about me.
Later, I found out that my father tried to finish his work by staying up late, and he drove for eight hours to get back. He had been sitting in the corner because he didn’t want me to see him. My father had every word of my speech in his mind.
For much of my life, I described my father as a cold-blooded man who only cared about his work. But when I thought deeply about this, it was not true. At my graduation ceremony, I could feel my father’s deep love. The fact is that seeing is not believing. Sometimes seeing may not be the fact if we don’t feel the world with our hearts and minds. Life is not short of love, but sometimes our eyes have trouble seeing it.

Su Qingwu, a post-90s girl from Wenzhou, east China’s Zhejiang Province, has built a pavilion (亭子) in her garden by hand. It’s a copy of a pavilion in the Palace Museum.
As a photographer, Su often had chances to visit local handicraftsmen (手工艺人) and take photos when they were working. Slowly she became interested in traditional handicrafts and looked for information about them online. “It all began with a photo of a pavilion in the Palace Museum I saw on the Internet. I fell in love with the colors and structure of it. Why don’t I build one at home?” she said. Soon she began to bring the idea to life.
Building a pavilion without glue or nails wasn’t that easy for Su. She started to learn the woodworking skills (技能) by reading books and watching videos. She also searched every corner of the town for the things she needed. It seemed easy at first, but it was a different story when she was building the pavilion. She had trouble making a drawing of the pavilion at the beginning. She kept trying and found her own way, but the mortise-and-tenon joint (榫卯连接) was a big headache for her. In order to solve the problem, she visited the Palace Museum in person, found the pavilion in the photo, and studied the mortise-and-tenon joint carefully. Finally, her pavilion was finished.
It took Su 150 days to build her first pavilion. Later, she spent 200 days building a Tang-style pavilion. It is bigger and more difficult to build than the first one. She is now planning to create another copy of the pavilion in the Palace Museum in the near future. “I want to pass on the Chinese traditional handicrafts through building more pavilions, so more people can see them one day.” Su said. “I’m sure these traditional handicrafts’ show the confidence (信心) in Chinese culture.”
