Author Walter Dean Myers died at the age of 76 after a brief illness. Walter Dean Myers was the author of more than100 books for children and young adults and received many top awards.
The prolific author was loved for his vivid description of the lives of African American children, and for writing books for young people that covered different subjects. “Myers has written about all those subjects with deep understanding and a hard-won, qualified sense of hope, ” said Leonard S. Marcus in 2008.
He was born in 1937 and was adopted by Florence Dean and Herbert after his mother died while giving birth to his younger sister. They loved him very much and his mother read to him from a very young age. Reading pushed him to discover worlds beyond his landscape.
He began writing at an early age. He wrote well in high school and an English teacher recognized this and advised him to keep on writing no matter what happened to him. “It’s what you do, ” she said.
He dropped out of high school at 17and joined the army. After finishing his service, he entered a dark period in his life. Myers began writing at night to pull himself through that miserable time.
In an essay published in The New York Times earlier this year, Myers described how a short story by James Arthur Baldwin helped change the course of his life. “I didn’t love the story, but I was lifted by it, ” he wrote, “for it took place in Harlem, and it was a story concerned with black people like those I knew. By humanizing the people who were like me, Baldwin’s story also humanized me. The story gave me a permission that I didn’t know I needed, the permission to write about my own landscape, my own map. ”
“I write books for the troubled boy I once was, ” he wrote, “and for the boy who lives within me still. ”

One of the hardest things about learning anything is figuring out how to practice. Or even what it means to practice. Repetition is often key. But you don’t want something that sucks all the joy out.
I’ve been teaching myself to draw for a few years. I had improved a lot but for a long while was going nowhere. I’d tried lots of books and courses and filled endless pages with boxes, parallel lines and figures.
But something clicked when I started sketchbooking (速描) this year. The sketchbooks led to a shift in mindset. Rather than trying to practice, I was engaging in a practice – scribbling (乱涂乱画). Whiling away the hours with the books became something in its own right rather than a means to an end.
I started carrying sketchbooks everywhere. The simple act of capturing scenes and moments in my sketchbook became an essential part of my experiences. The books also became a way for me to work through stuff, such as when my wife had a health scare and was in the hospital for a weekend. As we waited endlessly to find out what was happening, it was a safe space where I could just be.
I spoke to Danny Gregory, a writer who blogs and makes videos about sketchbooking, to try to figure out why I had become so taken by my new practice.
“We think about practice in drawing like practice in piano, where you have to do things like playing scales (音阶) and completing exercises,” Gregory said. “I’ve always hated that. It feels really academic. It’s not expressive.”
I have since filled two sketchbooks solely with portraits, not as studies for future work, but as individual expressions. Similarly, Gregory recounted how he filled a sketchbook with drawings of his morning tea cup, emphasizing the value of repetitive, focused practice.
My latest sketchbook will tackle the biggest challenge of all my drawings – hands. I’ve always had problems drawing hands. It’s early days, but I’m not fearing it as I did before because drawing a bunch of hands isn’t just practice anymore; it’s the practice of practice.
5. What was the author’s main challenge in learning to draw initially?
A. Maintaining interest in drawing over time.
B. Finding the right books and courses on drawing.
C. Mastering portrait drawing techniques.
D. Making continued progress through constant practice.

A. A comforting outlet. B. A distraction from his pain.
C. A means of communication. D. A way to document solutions.
7. How does sketchbooking differ from traditional drawing practice, according to Danny Gregory?
A. It is more academic in nature.
B. It involves studying specific techniques.
C. It’s an active engagement with personal ideas.
D. It’s an essential step for creating future paintings.
8. What is the author’s current attitude toward drawing hands?
A. Worried. B. Bored.
C. Curious. D. Enthusiastic.
Where did we get this?” my wife asks me when she comes across a new-to-her item in our household. She already knows the answer: Either I bought it at a yard sale, or I found it on the street. Let’s say “rescued”, actually. Rescued it from the street.
Items in that category include: the desk chair I'm sitting in, a much better potato masher than the one I broke, an ax with an intact (完好无损的) handle (unlike mine), silverware I keep in the car so we don’t use plastic stuff when we eat at the fish place, a banjo, and a didgeridoo.
It is difficult to shame me about this. I feel both a moral and a financial impulse. Why should something go to a landfill if I have a use for it? Why should I pay top dollar for something if I can get one that's as good at low or no cost?
I paid cash for a toy aircraft carrier. It was the most plastic I'd ever seen in one place: about 1.5 meters long,1 meter wide, and 0.76 meters tall. It was in pieces when I bought it. Our three boys were young then, and money was tight. I felt I could restore it to its epic glory. Sadly, I couldn’t find the parts. The boys quickly outgrew it, and I moved it along. It felt right to sell it for what I'd paid: four bucks.
I spotted a rug (地毯) immediately at a yard sale. It looked new, and I didn’t have to talk myself into admiring the pattern. Twenty bucks. I couldn’t get the money out of my wallet fast enough.
Not until I got it home and inside did I realize why the rug had been so inexpensive and yet still available. What was that smell? It was not a pet’s smell, but a chemical odor. I went online, and found that the glue used to attach the fibers to the backing was off-gassing VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and would do so far into the indeterminate future. I threw it out.
Reusing is noble and economical. But if you decide to join me in this campaign remember: Wake up and smell the carpet.

Katie DeWitt, a high school junior in Spokane, Washington, has been flying planes since she was 14 — years before she could drive a car. Her first flight was terrifying: “I was kind of freaking out,” she says, but once in the air, she loved the view. Katie is part of the Air-Force Junior ROTC program, which partners with Northwest Flight Service to teach teens to fly.
Evie Nesselrode, a senior at another school, joined the program at 16. Though they attend different schools, Katie and Evie study physics, aircraft mechanics, and math together in flight school. “Flying uses precalculus and algebra (预科微积分和代数),” says Evie. “It makes my brain stronger.” Pilots need math daily: Addition & subtraction to calculate a plane’s weight (too heavy is unsafe for takeoff); Algebra to find flight time based on speed; Geometry to judge runway turns and takeoff angles (a too-steep angle can hit the plane’s tail).
Students practice in the classroom and in the air, always with an adult copilot until they log 30 flight hours. Evie, now dizzy-free, plans to join the Air Force through New Mexico Institute. Katie also aims for a flying career. “Not many people get this opportunity,” she says. “I have big goals, and I’ll work hard for them.”
This program shows how math connects to real-life adventures — and how teens can chase bold dreams with training and determination.

For over twenty years, fried chicken had been my absolute favorite food. I would have it at least three times a week, whether it was from a fast- food joint, a local diner, or even homemade. I planned my outings around places that served delicious fried chicken. There were times when I tried to cut back on it, especially when I started to gain some weight, but I always ended up giving in to my cravings within a few days.
This year, a series of events changed my relationship with fried chicken forever. I began experiencing frequent stomachaches and indigestion. Doctors couldn’t directly link these problems to fried chicken, but I noticed that every time I ate it, my discomfort worsened. Additionally, I started to realize that the once- mouthwatering smell and taste now left a heavy, greasy feeling in my mouth that I couldn’t ignore. One evening, after finishing a large bucket of fried chicken, I felt so sick that I couldn’t sleep well all night. That was the turning point. I decided that enough was enough, after two decades of indulgence.
Why was it so hard to let go before? Is there really something addictive in fried chicken? While there’s no official “fried chicken addiction” listed in medical books, experts point out factors that could contribute to its allure. Dr. Johnson from a nutrition research center mentions two main elements: the high-fat content and the combination of spices. The high-fat content triggers the release of endorphins in the brain, making us feel good, while the unique blend of spices stimulates our taste buds, making us want more.
Now, I’m on Day 35 of my “fried-chicken-free” journey. The first week was tough. I had strong cravings and even felt a bit down at times, almost like going through a mild withdrawal. But as the days passed, I started to feel better. My stomach problems became less frequent, and I even noticed that I had more energy. I’m really proud of myself for breaking this long-standing habit. If I can overcome my love for fried chicken, I believe I can overcome any other challenging habit in my life.

D. The author successfully reduced the intake of fried chicken several times.
18. What led the author to give up fried chicken?
A. A doctor’s strict order.
B. Health problems and an unpleasant feeling after eating.
C. A newfound dislike for the smell of chicken.
D. A friend’s advice on a healthier diet.
19. What does the underlined word “allure” in paragraph 3 probably mean?

Sun Simiao, the author of the earliest encyclopedia for traditional Chinese medicine, has been worshiped across the country as the King of Medicine ever since his time in the early Tang Dynasty.
Sun was born in Shaanxi Province in northwestern China, where many locals frequently contracted unusual illnesses at that time. Even Sun’s father was suffering from night blindness and his mother had serious thick-neck symptoms. So, the boy studied very hard and was determined to become a doctor once he grew up to help treat his parents, relatives and neighbors in his home village.
In addition to various Chinese classics, the young Sun dug deep into every medical treatise that he could have access to. ____25____ It was scary at first but eventually fun and exciting. On the first day of school, I feel nervous because I have to meet new classmates, new teachers, and make new friends. But I am excited to start a new chapter in my life. Senior high school includes the last two years of high school, which are Grades 11 and 12. The goal is to help students gain skills that will make them ready for jobs after graduation and prepare them for college.

I hated writing growing up. But I couldn’t avoid it: learning English was a must in high school. For hours, I stared at blank pages, trying to turn my disorganized thoughts into fluent sentences. I tried my best but my teachers would return my papers littered with red. I was upset to no end. ____30____. And that was OK. I didn’t have to do well in everything.
____31____. I liked it because objective truth could be found if I searched properly. In college, I joined a research lab to enhance conductor efficiency, and after a year of hard work, we developed a design that halved energy losses. However, the joy was short-lived as I had to write a research paper about our findings.
I knew that if I wanted to become an academic, I would need to spend time writing papers. But with my awful track record with writing, I was scared of failing. In a panic, I asked a graduate student in my lab for help. We defined a goal for the paper, and I carefully wrote an outline. But when I asked him for feedback, I soon found the paper covered in red marks. ____32____.
Before I could give up in defeat, though, the graduate student explained those red marks didn’t mean I was a bad writer. ____33____. It requires revising your work, often several times. I kept improving the outline of my paper, eventually turning it into sentences and paragraphs. My initial draft wasn’t perfect. Can you get through seven days without looking at a digital device? I have tried a digital detox (脱瘾) and here’s what has happened.
It’s well-documented: Our screens are prisons that destroy our attention span, and weaken our mental health, increasing our carbon footprint. ____35____
I’ve decided to try to live like it’s 1996, and go back to my pre-Internet life, with a one-week digital detox — no computers or cellphones.____36____ To start with, I need to explain the concept to my friends and family so they’re not wondering why I’ve suddenly fallen off the map. I set up an out-of-office reply: “____37____ If this is an emergency, call my landline.”
____38____ I borrow my eight-year-old son’s watch (to be honest, the last time I wore a watch, it was the 20th century), write down the entire week’s appointments and map out routes. When all that is done, I find my long-abandoned landline phone and plug it in.
My digital detox hasn’t even begun and I’m already aware of the fact that I underestimated my screen dependency. I feel nervous. ____39____ However, now, on the edge of the abyss (深渊), I’m seized by complete anxiety. I type the final words on my phone, which I’ll put in the drawer. I’ll shut the drawer and tape it closed. Once it’s taped, there will be no turning back.
Actually, on the next morning as soon as I wake up, I reach toward the taped bedside table. Clearly, I still have a long way to go...

I was always shy. As a new student in the school, I spent most days staring at my desk, which made it surprising that I chatted to someone around me one day. ____40____ That would take all night!
After I got home, I took my time petting the cat, postponing the pain. When I finally sat down to write the five-page essay, I began with the reasons Ms. Black would want to hear.
First of all, talking in class would keep me and my neighbors from learning. I wrote wildly and one paragraph down. ____41____ What if talking were the first step towards life as a bad person? I started picturing my future as a failed bank robber. Without the education I was throwing away, I’d turn to a criminal and go to prison! When I got out, people would point fingers at me and say, “She used to talk in class.” ____42____
But when mum got home from work, I was still roaring, “Five pages! That’s impossible!” “Well, you’d better get back to work,” she said, “and I want to read it when you’re through.”
Shortly after dinner, the essay packed with my complaints was handed to mum. ____43____ Instead, mum laughed so hard that she had to wipe her eyes, “Oh, this is going to be memorable. ”
The next day, as Ms. Black read my essay aloud, the class erupted into laughter. ____44____ The essay didn’t cure my shyness overnight, but I did learn I wasn’t shy in print. My face burned, but for the first time, it wasn’t from shame; it was pride.

By my early 40s, I had tried every hobby meant to ease the transition (过渡) into middle age: learning a new language, an abandoned project, and even yoga. ____45____ So, in a moment of low-grade desperation, I decided to try ballet.
“But you’re not very flexible,” my husband gently reminded me. He wasn’t wrong. My history with physical activities — badminton, cycling, swimming — hadn’t exactly been promising. ____46____
Before my first class at the National Ballet School in Toronto, I grabbed a headband from my drawer. I was clearly aware that I was going to stand in front of a mirror with all my postural (体态的) problems on display. ____47____ I didn’t expect much from the class, but to my surprise, the things that had driven me away as a 10-year-old now brought me joy: the repetitive exercises, the physical effort, and the teacher’s critical eye.
Though I expected my legs to ache, what I didn’t expect was how my teacher’s command to “take up more space” would change my way of being in the world. ____48____ As a writer, this felt like the best advice I’d ever received.
____49____ At 50, I’m a ballerina — not the kind you’d see on stage, but someone who moves and breathes with purpose, marveling (惊叹于) at my body’s possibilities, imperfections and all.

F. But I determined to prove my body could still move with elegance.
G. Ballet, he reminded me, isn’t about perfection, but working towards it.
I first became interested in the Rubik’s Cube (魔方) when I was 13 because I wanted to use it in my magic trick routine. I soon realized that if I really made an effort. I could solve the cube. I started watching videos that explained the algorithms (算法). I watched them every day and I became fascinated. ____50____ In 2019, Rubik’s Cube hired me as a brand ambassador (大使), and I began making video content for them. Every job I’ve ever had has been in some way related to the skills I’ve acquired through cubing. ____51____ It has also shown me that success is often the result of messing up.
As well as working as a brand ambassador, I do Guinness World Records to get recognition for the cube. For the Guinness World Record at the London Marathon in 2024, Rubik’s sent me 600 cubes, which my friends scrambled (打乱). The cubes were then put into bags. During the race, I had two bags on my front: one for the scrambled cubes and the other for the solved cubes. ____52____ I had people waiting at checkpoints every two miles to exchange bags with me and give me 50 scrambled cubes in return for the 50 I had solved. This meant I was carrying ten kilos of cubes with me for the entire race. ____53____ In this way, everything was documented and then confirmed by Guinness World Records to make it official.
____54____ We’re not competing against each other, but against ourselves. In 2024, I beat my quickest solving time of 3.31 seconds, reducing it to 3.25 seconds. It was a great feeling! I believe anyone can solve the cube — it’s just a question of hard work and putting in the time.

1. What does the second paragraph mainly talk about?
A. How popular Myers was. B. How Myers became successful.
C. What makes Myers’ works popular. D. What people think of Myers’ works.

6. What did sketchbooking provide the author during his wife’s health crisis?
【答案】5. D 6. A 7. C 8. D

But if you decide to join me in this campaign, remember: Wake up and smell the carpet.
9. What lifestyle does the author like?
A. Simple. B. Healthy.
C. Sustainable. D. Independent.
10. As for the aircraft carrier, what is the author optimistic about?
A. Recycling the most plastic from it.
B. Returning it to its former grand state.
C. Helping his boys complete the restoration.
D. Making more money from the finished piece.
11. Why does the author tell the story of the rug?
A. To ensure the practice of reusing.
B. To stress the reward of reusing items.
C. To highlight the caution in reusing items.
D. To emphasize the importance of the web.
12. What might be the best title for the text?

17. What can be inferred about the author from the first paragraph?
A. Fried chicken was only a casual part of the author’s diet.
B. The author never worried about the health risks of eating fried chicken.
C. The author had a deep and long-lasting love for fried chicken.
A. harm B. cost C. waste D. attraction
20. How does the author feel about giving up fried chicken?
A. Regretful B. Confused C. Satisfied D. Uncertain.
【答案】17. C 18. B 19. D 20. C

(到我40岁出头的时候,我尝试了每一种旨在缓解向中年过渡的爱好:学习一门新语言,一个半途而废的项目,甚至瑜伽。)”提到作者尝试了多种爱好。A选项“Nothing seemed to stick. (似乎没有一种爱好能坚持下来。)”承接上文,说明没有持续下去这一结果,与下文情绪“a moment of low-grade desperation”相照应,上下文语意连贯。故选A项。
【46题详解】
上文“He wasn’t wrong. My history with physical activities — badminton, cycling, swimming — hadn’t exactly been promising. (他说得没错。我在体育活动方面的经历——羽毛球、骑自行车、游泳——并不乐观。)”表明作者在体育活动方面表现不佳。F选项“But I determined to prove my body could still move with elegance. 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述作者因魔术对魔方产生兴趣,后成品牌大使,还在马拉松中创纪录并分享感悟。
【50题详解】
上文“I first became interested in the Rubik’s Cube when I was 13 because I wanted to use it in my magic trick routine. I soon realized that if I really made an effort. I could solve the cube. I started watching videos that explained the algorithms (算法). I watched them every day and I became fascinated.(我13岁时第一次对魔方感兴趣,因为我想在魔术表演中使用它。我很快意识到,如果我真的努力,我就能解开魔方。我开始观看讲解算法的视频。我每天都看,我被迷住了)”说明作者对魔方产生了兴趣并开始学习相关算法。空处和前文为顺接关系,说明作者在魔方学习上的进一步成果。所以C项“大约一年后,我赢得了我的第一个英国冠军头衔”符合语境“About a year later”衔接时间线,“won my first UK champion title”为后续被品牌雇佣的铺垫。故选C。
【51题详解】
上文“Every job I’ve ever had has been in some way related to the skills I’ve acquired through cubing.(我所做的每一份工作都在某种程度上与我玩魔方所获得的技能有关)”说明作者的工作与玩魔方所获得的技能有关联。下文“It has also shown me that success is often the result of messing up.(这也让我明白,成功往往是失败的结果)” 通过also表并列,强调另一层启示。空处需与上下文构成并列关系,体现魔方带来的双重影响。所以A项“它教会了我努力工作和解决问题”符合语境,“taught me hard work and problem-solving”对应上文中的 “skills”,且与下文“also shown me”结构一致。故选A。
【52题详解】
上文“During the race, I had two bags on my front: one for the scrambled cubes and the other for the solved cubes.(在比赛过程中,我前面有两个包:一个装打乱的魔方,另一个装解开的魔方)”说明作者在比赛过程中带着两个包,分别装着打乱的魔方和解开的魔方。
上文“This meant I was carrying ten kilos of cubes with me for the entire race.(这意味着我在整个比赛过程中都带着十公斤的魔方)”说明作者在比赛过程中需要携带大量的魔方。下文“In this way, everything was documented and then confirmed by Guinness World Records to make it official.(通过这种方式,一切都被记录下来,然后被吉尼斯世界纪录确认为正式)”说明需记录过程以获吉尼斯认证。
下文“We’re not competing against each other, but against ourselves.(我们不是在互相竞争,而是在与自己竞争)”说明玩魔方的人之间不是竞争关系,而是与自己竞争。
