It was a sunny Saturday, and the sky was a clear, brilliant blue. Emily, a ten-year-old girl with wild curls, skipped down the path to the local farmers’ market, her pink sneakers bouncing with each step. She clutched a carefully saved five-dollar bill, its edges worn from countless folds. Her goal was simple: buy fresh strawberries for her mom, who had been feeling down after a long week at work. Emily remembered how her mom used to love making strawberry pies, and the sweet aroma (香味) always brightened her mood.
As she reached the market, colorful stalls and a medley of scents greeted her — the earthy smell of vegetables, the sweet fragrance of flowers, and the warm aroma of baked goods. Vendors called out their best deals, their voices rising and falling in a lively chorus. A group of children laughed nearby as they chased each other around a stall selling handmade toys. The sound of coins clinking in cash registers mixed with the cheerful chatter of shoppers. Emily’s eyes sparkled at the plump, red strawberries. Just as she was about to approach a stand, a soft whimpering (哀鸣) caught her attention. Following the sound to a corner, she found a small, dirty puppy with big, sad eyes. Its thin body trembled, a tight rope leaving a mark around its neck. The puppy’s fur was matted, and its ribs showed through its skin.
Emily’s heart melted. She knew she had to help. With the five-dollar bill in her hand, she was considering how to get the best of both worlds. Thinking of her mom, yet unable to ignore the puppy’s suffering, Emily made up her mind. She bought a loaf of bread and fed the puppy, whose tail wagged weakly. Suddenly, a stern voice interrupted them. “What are you doing with that stray dog?” Mr. Thompson, the market security guard, approached her with a serious expression.

“I can’t believe the one guy, the first guy, to see me fall, to show up and give me help, was a cardiac(心脏外科)surgeon,” Pham told Long Beach Post in an interview. “What are the odds?”
Tuan Pham was feeling pretty good about himself as he approached the 12-mile mark of the Long Beach Half Marathon in Southern California. The run on Oct.15, 2023, was the 47-year-old’s seventh such event, and he couldn’t wait to celebrate at the finish line with his teenage son, who had raced ahead. Pham took another step or two, and that was the last thing he remembers.
He can’t recall staggering or falling face-first to the ground, where he lay motionless as runners skirted him. He had no pulse, nor was he breathing. Three blocked arteries(动脉)had worked together to do him in. He was clinically dead. If he didn’t get help soon, he’d be officially dead.
The odds of surviving a cardiac arrest(心脏骤停)outside of a hospital are less than 12%. Pham’s only chance of survival was if someone, say, a cardiologist, happened to pass by.
Just as Pham hit the ground, Ryan Chiu, a cardiothoracic surgeon from Memorial Care Long Beach Medical Center, was leaving a restaurant a few feet away. Dr. Chiu immediately recognized what was happening. He ran to Pham’s side and began chest compressions. He obtained the help of a bystander who took over on compressions while Dr. Chiu called his hospital and told them to prepare an operating room and gather a surgical team. They had an emergency on their hands.
Minutes later, an ambulance arrived. Medics sped Pham away to the hospital, with Dr. Chiu following in his own car. The triple bypass surgery that Dr. Chiu performed was a success. After the surgery, Tuan Pham spent several weeks in recovery.

Suzi wanted to go to a beach party. It was going to be the best party of the year, perhaps the best party of her life. But her mom had said no. Suzi was desperate and protested, “But everyone is going.”
“I don’t care who’s going,” replied her mother. “Even if the Queen of England were going, you are still not going.”
Suzi was disappointed and even heartbroken. Sunday dinner came around and Suzi's grandmother joined the family for the meal, as she nearly always did on Sunday. Gran noticed how unhappy Suzi had been looking during the meal but didn’t say a thing. It was Suzi's turn to wash up and Gran said, “Let me help you,” while the rest of the family shifted into the living room to watch a video.
In the kitchen, Gran knew what had happened and said, “If you were her, what would your objections be?” Suzi hadn’t stopped to think about her mom’s side.
After learning that some adults were going to be there, Gran said to Suzi, “Your mother is concerned and doesn’t want anything to happen to you?” “Nothing will happen,” objected Suzi.
“Maybe you’re right,” said Gran, “but maybe Mom’s worried in case it could. You know, when your mother was your age, we used to negotiate about something. If she was going out somewhere, I would ask what time she wanted me to pick her up. She would always add an hour or two to it, saying maybe eleven or twelve o’clock, thinking I wouldn’t know what she was doing. I’d tell her that was far too late and that I wanted her home by nine. She’d object and we’d both come to a compromise (折中) at ten or ten-thirty, which was around what both of us had been thinking all along.”
“That way, neither of us was the winner or loser; that way, she got to have time out as she wanted and I got to see her home at a reasonable time. By finding a compromise, we both got something, though maybe not completely, of what we wanted.”

Ava, a talented young artist, had been working on a series of paintings inspired by the ancient legends of her homeland. She spent months researching the stories, sketching rough drafts, and carefully choosing the perfect colors for each piece. Finally, after pouring her heart and soul into her work, she completed the collection.
Eager to share her creations with the world, Ava applied to exhibit her paintings at the prestigious local art gallery. To her delight, her application was accepted, and she was given a prime spot in the upcoming exhibition. The days leading up to the opening night were filled with excitement and anticipation. Ava made sure every painting was perfectly framed and arranged in the gallery space.
On the night of the exhibition, the gallery was filled with art enthusiasts, critics, and potential buyers. Ava greeted the guests with a mixture of nervousness and pride. As people walked around, examining her paintings, she overheard snippets of their conversations. Some praised her use of color and the vividness of her depictions, while others were deeply intrigued by the way she had brought the ancient legends to life on the canvas.
However, just as the event was in full swing, a group of self-proclaimed art critics approached Ava. They looked at her paintings with a condescending air and began to critique her work harshly. One of them said, “The concepts are too old-fashioned. Modern art should be more abstract and experimental.” Ava was taken aback. Their words cut deep, and she felt a lump form in her throat. She had worked so hard, and now these people were tearing her work apart in front of everyone.
As the negative comments continued, Ava started to doubt herself. She wondered if she had been wrong to follow her own artistic vision. Should she have tried to be more modern and avant-garde? Just then, an elderly man, who had been quietly observing the commotion, stepped forward. He had a kind face and a gentle smile. “Don’t listen to them, young lady,” he said softly. “True art comes from the heart, not from following trends.”

In the neighbourhood, my dad, Mr. Duane, is always referred to as “Collector Duane”. He is an enthusiastic collector, who is always on the hunt for old items to repurpose, believing that with a bit of creativity, these forgotten objects can be transformed into something useful and new. Recently, he came across an old bicycle wheel, an old-fashioned metal milk box, an antique lamp, a dirty vase and some old clothes at a flea market, imagining all the possibilities they held.
My parents have a neighbor: Helen Fox. She is a 91-year-old widow (寡妇) . My parents, along with several other neighbors, look after Helen, ensuring she feels loved and supported.
Helen had long suffered from a problem: her mailbox. For some reason, the mailbox was placed insecurely down a somewhat steep (陡峭的) driveway off a busy highway, making it a daily danger for her to fetch her mail. Besides, it was old and rusty, as if it had suffered multiple violent impacts. Its once-bright red paint had faded to a dull pink. The door hung loosely, creaking (嘎吱作响) with every gust of wind. The letters on it had faded over the years. The ‘F’ was no longer clear, the ‘O’ had lost its shape, and the ‘X’ was almost gone. Helen wanted to replace it with a new one and move it to a new location, but she had no idea where to start.
The minute my dad heard about it, he made it his mission to settle the problem. He began by contacting the local rural mail service, arranging to relocate Helen's mailbox. He also talked with Yancey, their shared rural postman, explaining the upcoming change. A relatively safe place was easy to find. But the real challenge was finding a perfect mailbox.

There’s an image of big cities as soulless places, where everyone appears to be looking out only for themselves. However, my own experiences tell a different story. During some of the most challenging times of my life, when I was struggling to find proper housing, I worked as an artist on the street. For years, I played my flute (长笛) there, and in doing so, I discovered the natural kindness of people. They showed compassion without expecting anything in return, driven purely by human goodwill.
This profound realization took hold when I was 21, living in Sydney. I worked at a local pub, feeling lost and directionless. Amid the chaos of my life, playing the flute was my only constant source of comfort. Looking back, my connection with the flute began when I was 16. Earning a mere $2.35 an hour at the supermarket, I saved for two long years to buy it. Every day after work, playing the flute became my way of processing the day’s emotions.
One day, while working at the pub, someone asked me what I was doing that night. “I’m going to be playing the flute at —” I started to say, but then it struck me: I had forgotten to pick up my flute when I got off the train. Panic set in immediately. In a fit of frustration, I threw the plastic chair I was holding across the room.
I rushed to the train station, hoping someone had handed in my flute. No luck. Still, I left my number, clinging to the slim hope that it would turn up. Convinced that it was gone forever — after all, I hadn’t even written my name on the case — I spent the next week drowning in self-blame, drinking heavily and feeling sorry for myself.
Then, out of the blue, I received a call from CityRail. They had my flute. I hurried to the lost property office at Central Station. And there it was, among all the other lost items.

I was born into a very close family. It was just my parents and me. Over the years I’ve noticed how well my parents manage to look after their health and how healthy they are. I had never bothered to follow their example or been that curious about the secret of their good health. I never realized what a great resource they could be.
I would look at them both, so slim, strong and healthy — much more so than me — and think, how will I ever get to be like them? I’m constantly impressed by their toughness. They have never taken any sick days from work, unless they really need to. They don’t need to visit the doctor much. Their habits are deep-rooted and it works for them.
Part of their success is how efficiently they control what they eat. Their diet is extremely healthy and they stick to it. For breakfast, it’s porridge; lunch is salad or a wholemeal sandwich with butter, garlic, raw onion and black pepper. Dinner is boiled vegetables, or beans. Both of them grew up eating fresh, unprocessed food.
My dad is a bus driver, and my mum works part-time as a sales assistant. My dad started skipping at the age of six. He’s now a mini celebrity and admired by people worldwide with thousands of followers on social media. And my mum has won fitness competitions at the gym.
In this respect, I was the complete opposite. I hated fitness and was lazy and unfit. Last week I had a health scare; I found a lump (肿块) on my neck. After an examination, it turned out to be fatty tissue, which isn’t harmful but unless I lose weight, or I have surgery, it could get worse. My parents said to me: don’t get surgery, let us train you and you’ll feel much better. I wanted to take the easy option and have it removed. But I also thought, maybe this was an eye-opener and a wake-up call for me to start getting fit.

Sophia was a teenager going through changes in her behaviour and dressing style. One day after school, Sophia’s mother prepared a plate of delicious vegetables and rice and asked Sophia to have dinner, but she refused to eat it, insisting it wasn’t what she liked. Then she absent-mindedly knocked over a vase filled with beautiful roses. Her mother ignored it, but moments later, Sophia asked loudly, “Mummy! Why did you throw away some of my clothes and change the setting of my room?” Her mother was shocked as Sophia had never raised her voice so high.
At night when Sophia’s father came home, her mother discussed the matter with him. He listened carefully and asked Sophia’s mother to remain calm, no matter what Sophia did. “It’s time that we stepped back. Don’t do anything for her — no cooking, no laundry (洗衣物), no searching for her missing things…” he said.
The next day, Sophia overslept. Her mother didn’t wake her up or prepare breakfast, just putting some money on the table. Sophia grabbed the money and rushed to school. That afternoon, when Sophia returned home, she found there wasn’t any food prepared. Feeling unnoticed, Sophia went into her room, locked the door, and began to cry as if releasing the emotions she had bottled up for a long time.
After about 20 minutes, the doorbell rang. Quickly, Sophia dried her eyes and stepped out of her room. When she saw her mother return with a handful of shopping bags, she came in front of her, asking the reason for no breakfast or dinner. Her mother said gently, “Now that you have grown up and have your own thoughts, I’ll let you make some personal choices.” Then her mother headed to the kitchen, signaling Sophia to follow. Feeling confused, Sophia came into the kitchen with her mother.

Some kids play sports, while others are computer talents. But for me, I have the spelling bee. Every day after school, with a dictionary, I tried to study the spelling of every word. I wanted to win the bee, so that I could defeat my archenemy (劲敌), Nathan.
Nathan was my deskmate and he thought he was a good speller, but he didn’t even study words. He just read tons of science and math books. How could he be a speller in that way? I bet if he was given a literature word like “judgment”, he would be out in the first round of the contest.
Last Friday was the day for the spelling bee. Since it started after lunch, all I did in the morning was staring at the clock and wondering how seconds could possibly pass so slowly. Math was the first period, and Nathan was on top of the world when Mr. Stephen said we were learning algebra (代数) today. Mr. Stephen wrote lots of equations with letters on the whiteboard. To me, it all sounded like nonsense. “Letters are for words. How could we use letters in that way!” I complained. Nathan turned his head and looked at me. “Letters are for math, too!” he said. “Letters are all over math.” I looked angrily at him, “You will find out what letters are for this afternoon.”
Finally, the competition came! “It’s the big day!” Ms. Hawking announced brightly. She made us form a circle and explained the rule — “miss one word, and you’re out”. Then she looked down to read words from her list. My class was full of bad spellers. After three rounds, there were only Nathan and I.
Nathan’s next word was “magician.” “M-A-G-I-C-I-A-N, magician.” He got it, but he looked uncertain the whole time he was spelling it. I smiled, confident of my upcoming victory. I believed that he was definitely unfamiliar with literature words. “Your word is ‘algebra’,” Ms. Hawking said to me.

It was a freezing winter day. Alex, a high school senior, was on his way home from the library. With his final exams approaching, he had been buried in books for hours, trying to absorb as much knowledge as possible. As he walked along the quiet street, the cold wind blew at his face, making his ears red.
Suddenly, a strange noise caught his attention. It seemed to come from an alley between two old buildings. Curiosity getting the better of him, Alex decided to check it out. When he stepped into the dark and narrow alley, he saw a small figure hidden in the corner. It was a young boy, no more than ten years old, wearing poor clothes that were far too thin for the cold weather.
“Hey, are you okay?” Alex asked, approaching the boy slowly. The boy looked up, his eyes filled with fear and hesitation. He nodded slightly but said nothing. Alex noticed that the boy was shaking uncontrollably. Without thinking, he took off his thick coat and wrapped it around the boy. “Here, put this on. It’ll keep you warm,” Alex said with a warm smile.
The boy looked at Alex in surprise, as if he couldn’t believe someone would be so kind to him. “Thank you,” he said in a low voice. Alex sat down beside the boy and started to talk to him. He learned the boy’s name was Ben, and that he had run away from home because he had a big argument with his parents. Ben was too scared to call his parents and had been wandering the streets for a day.
Alex’s heart ached for the little boy. He knew he couldn’t just leave Ben there. But he also had his own problems. His final exams were only a few days away, and every minute was precious. However, looking at Ben’s pale face and shaking body, he made a decision.

I was going way too fast down the winding road. I hit a rock, and my entire body shook up and forward. My legs flew up, and my hands left the handlebars for a brief moment. For a second, I thought I might crash. By some miracle, I stayed on the bike. I slowed down but didn’t stop. I kept pedaling (踩踏板).
I was a 42-year-old kindergarten teacher. I had three teenage children who went to a local youth group. They were doing a fundraiser to go to a summer camp. Ryan, my thirteen-year-old son, approached me and said, “Mom, you should ride in our bikeathon.” As he told me the details, I laughed out loud.
“What makes you think I could finish a twenty-mile bikeathon?” I asked. My son looked at me straight in the eyes. “When I don’t know if I can do something, you tell me I can, and so I try. And then I do it,” he said. “So now I know you can do it.” I laughed again and then agreed, thinking it would probably become a milestone (里程碑) for me.
So, I began preparing. I bought new equipment and kept training for weeks. Eventually, Bikeathon Day came on a cool spring morning. Ryan and I went to the starting point on a hill overlooking our valley, about twenty miles away from the finish line.
We and the other bikers all left together and began to wind down the hill. I started to go faster and faster — that’s when I lost control. The bikers around me didn’t seem to notice my near crash, so I just kept going. As the bikers spread out, some ahead of me and many behind me, I began to say to myself, “I know you can do it.”
Finally, I was down on flat land, and I was still alive and pedaling. Every mile became a challenge. Our valley was laid out in a grid (网格), so every street was named in numerical order like 90th, 89th Street, etc. That was frightening at first but gave me hope as the miles disappeared.

Jake had never imagined himself entering a writing contest. Writing had always seemed dull, and sharing his work with the entire school felt even worse. But his English teacher, Ms. Laveau, saw things differently.
“Jake, your storytelling is truly creative,” she told him after class. “You should give this school writing competition a shot.”
Jake hesitated. He didn’t think he could compete with the talented writers in school. Writing was for the top students, not for someone like him. But something about her words stayed with him.
That evening, he stared at the blank screen, his fingers hovering over the keyboard. After several false starts, he finally typed his first sentence. He remembered what Ms. Laveau had once said — “Great writing isn’t about being perfect the first time. It’s about rewriting and making it better.”
As he wrote, he became deeply engaged in his story — a tale about a student trapped in school, searching for freedom. The words flowed, reflecting his own feelings about expectations and the struggle to be heard. He worked harder than ever, revising his piece before handing it in just before the deadline.
On the day the results were announced, Jake’ s heart raced as he grabbed a copy of the latest school paper. His fingers flipped (迅速翻动) through the pages, scanning for his name. But his story wasn’t there.
Confused, he checked again. Nothing. Then, at the bottom of the editorial (编辑的) page, he spotted a small note:
“A special thanks to all participants. Some entries could not be published, but we encourage everyone to keep writing.”
A sinking feeling settled in his chest. Had he really thought he could succeed?
Around him, students chatted excitedly about the published works, praising the featured stories and poems. Jake felt invisible. For a moment, he considered giving up. But then his eyes landed on Linda — the student editor of the school newspaper. Maybe he needed answers before making a decision.

My mom started to run marathons when I was 6 and she always told me she gained so much power from that. I decided to seek the power in 2019, two years after my mom passed away.
As I trained for my first marathon, I joined a 5K event organized by Special Compass in Coral Gables. That's where I met Michael and I was paired with him by chance. When we first cooperated, I was astonished — Michael, with his bright smile and strong willpower, sat in his wheelchair, so I pushed him forward. He said he wanted to do what most people do and he believed he could. Michael’s spirit reminded me of my mom, who was always determined.
After that 5K, Michael and I became teammates and friends, and I knew I wanted to keep running with him. We started training together for various races, with me either biking or running while pulling or pushing his wheelchair. Michael kept encouraging me. Whenever I felt discouraged, he would say something inspiring to push me forward.
Our biggest goal was to become one of the first Duo (双人) Teams to complete six Abbott World Marathon Majors together. We had already finished Chicago, New York, Boston, London and Berlin. And now, we were standing at the starting line of the Tokyo Marathon, the last one on our list.
The atmosphere was thrilling. Thousands of runners were gathered, all with their own stories and goals. I looked down at Michael, his eyes shining with excitement and determination. “Are you ready, my dear friend?” I asked. He nodded with a firm look, “Let’s do this, Max!”
As the race began, we started at a steady pace. I focused on the road ahead, pushing Michael forward with all my strength. The first few miles were relatively easy, but as we reached the halfway point, tiredness started to set in. My legs felt heavy and my breathing became labored. I was thinking of giving up.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
Emily’s eyes widened in fear, but she stood her ground. “Sir, he’s so hungry and alone. I had to help him,” she explained. Mr. Thompson’s initial frown softened as he noticed the puppy’s trembling body and bony ribs. “I understand your kindness, but stray animals can cause trouble here,” he said. Emily’s heart sank, but she wasn’t ready to give up. “Please, sir. We can’t just leave him like this. He needs our help,” she pleaded. After a moment of hesitation, Mr. Thompson sighed. “Alright, I know a local animal shelter. It can be taken better care of there.”
Paragraph 2
As Emily listened to Mr. Thompson’s words, hope filled her heart. She quickly realized she still had time to buy strawberries for her mom. She thanked Mr. Thompson and rushed to the strawberry stand, buying the freshest ones she could find with the remaining money. Then, she joined Mr. Thompson, who had already called the shelter. When the shelter van arrived, Emily gave the puppy a final stroke on its head. “You’ll be okay now, little one,” she whispered. With a basket of strawberries in one hand and a heart full of joy, she skipped back home, proud of what she had done. That night, the strawberries tasted sweeter.

【答案】Pham kept reflecting on the incredible luck that saved him. Lying in the hospital bed, he stroked the scar on his chest-a permanent reminder of life’s fragility and the miracle that he experienced. He wouldn’t have survived the cardiac arrest against all odds had Dr. Chiu and the bystander not stepped in. The incident infused into him a profound sense of gratitude and a renewed determination to live life to the fullest. Every heartbeat is a borrowed gift, his resolve was fueled. As he regained his strength, Pham began to train again, slowly at first, but with a clear goal in mind: he would return to the Long Beach Half Marathon and finish those last 2 miles.
Then came the day of Pham’s eighth Marathon to finish the last 2 miles. Since Pham was alive and well — well enough to return to the route of the Long Beach Half Marathon and pick up where he left off, Pham felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. As he approached the 12-mile mark where he had collapsed months before, his hands trembled — not from exhaustion, but from the flood of memories. With each step, he silently thanked Dr. Chiu, the guardian angel who had rewritten his fate. His son, who had been his biggest supporter throughout the ordeal, jogged up beside him for the final stretch. The crowd erupted in cheers as they crossed the finish line arm-in-arm. Pham clutched his medal, tears blurring his vision.

【答案】After hearing Gran’s story, Suzi felt lost in thought. She began to understand that her mom’s concern wasn’t just about fun, but about her safety and responsibility. Gran had helped her realize that sometimes the best solutions come from seeing things from both sides. Suzi didn’t want her mom to feel like she needed to constantly monitor her, but she also wanted to show that she could be responsible. Gran, noticing her deep reflection, suggested, “Why don’t you talk to your mom? Maybe she’ll listen.”
With Gran’s encouragement, Suzi quietly went to her mom’s room and knocked softly. Her mom looked up, surprised, but smiled when she saw Suzi. “Mom, I really want to go to the party, but I understand you’re worried,” Suzi said. Her mom sighed, her expression softening. “I just want you to be safe,” she replied. They talked about their concerns and reached an agreement: Suzi could go, but she’d check in regularly. As Suzi left her mom’s room, a warm feeling filled her. She knew their bond was stronger than before.

【答案】参考范文
The elderly man shared his similar story in his artistic journey. He told Ava that when he was young, his paintings were often dismissed as too traditional. But he didn’t let the negative remarks stop him. Instead, he continued to paint what he loved, drawing inspiration from his own experiences and emotions. Over the years, his unique style had been recognized, and his works were now highly valued. His story showed Ava that staying true to oneself was the key to success in art.
Inspired by the elderly man’s words, Ava regained her confidence. She realized that her paintings were a reflection of her passion for the ancient legends and her homeland. She walked up to the group of critics and calmly said, “My art is a part of me. I create for the love of it, not to meet your standards.” Then, she turned to the other guests, ready to share the stories behind her paintings with newfound courage. As she spoke, people listened intently, and the atmosphere in the gallery shifted. Her authenticity and passion won over the crowd, and the exhibition ended up being a huge success.

【答案】One possible version
Then he remembered the old objects he had recently collected. Among them was an old-fashioned metal milk box, which showed scratches but was still sturdy. He thought it could be repurposed into a perfect new mailbox. With a burst of inspiration, he got to work immediately. He cleaned the milk box thoroughly, removing years of dirt and rust. He also added a new coat of bright red paint, making it look brand-new and cheerful, as if getting a second life. To personalize it, he painted the letters “FOX” clearly on the side in white. For the finishing touch, he attached a small, decorative metal handle he had salvaged from an old drawer.
The next day, he showed up at Helen's house with a shiny new mailbox. Helen was amazed when she saw it. “Mr. Duane, this is wonderful! You are so creative and kind,” she exclaimed, her eyes lighting up with joy. My dad installed the mailbox in a new, safer location. Yancey, the postman, was also impressed when he delivered the first batch of mail to the new mailbox. From then on, Helen no longer had to worry about fetching her mail. The new mailbox not only served its purpose but also became a symbol of the warm and caring community they lived in. Every time Helen saw it, she was reminded of the kindness of her neighbors, especially Collector Duane.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Desperate and anxious, I said, “What if I play you a tune?”_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
As I went to grab it, the guards there asked for my ID. I froze in my tracks, a wave of panic washing over me. I stammered, telling them I didn’t have any ID on me, and that getting it would be a huge hassle. Despair filled my eyes as I pleaded with them, explaining how precious this flute was to me. It wasn’t just an instrument; it was my connection to a better time, a source of comfort in my otherwise chaotic life. But the guards said, “Well, sorry — you’ve got to have ID to get your flute back.” I stared at the flute, so close yet so out of reach, and held back the tears of frustration that threatened to spill.
Desperate and anxious, I said, “What if I play you a tune?” The guards hesitated, but then nodded. I closed my eyes and started playing Greensleeves. As the first notes filled the air, a rush of emotions surged through me. I could feel the guards’ attention on me, and for a moment, the world around us seemed to stand still. When I opened my eyes, I saw that the guards’ expressions had softened. “That’s your flute,” one of them said softly. Without hesitation, I grabbed my flute and walked away, my heart swelling with gratitude. It was a double kindness — first from the person who handed my flute in, and then the guards who broke the rules to let me take it. This experience only reaffirmed my belief in the goodness of people, even in the bustling heart of a big city.

【答案】We worked out an exercise plan that suited all three of us. We rose early in the morning, did some sit-ups and breathing exercises and then went for a run. We chose unprocessed food over fried chips and drank more water. Initial days were tough for me—my legs aching, and sweat streaming down, paired with unappealing meals. However, Dad’s firm “Keep going” drove me on, while Mom would wipe the sweat from my forehead. Gradually, the painful drills have transformed into a sustainable habit.
Now I can feel the benefits. And breathing during working out has became easier and jeans has been loosening around my waist. Dad is content with my steadier pace, murmuring, “You’ve been a very different man!” I feel more positive. It is these lifestyle changes that have made a real difference. My parents’ fitness levels are still far higher than mine, but it’s a motivation to keep me going. Finally, the stubborn lump on my neck disappeared, which is an award for my efforts.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Possible version:
Her mother opened the bags and asked Sophia to look and choose by herself. Inside were fresh vegetables and grains that Sophia loved. “You’re old enough to decide what to eat and how to manage your time,” her mother said softly, handing her a recipe book. Excited but nervous, Sophia decided to make a beef sandwich. Having never cooked before, she naturally had difficulty throughout the process. Fortunately, her mother offered her helpful instructions, resulting in a not-so-good dinner. Sophia realized how hard the housework was.
The next morning, Sophia woke up with the determination to change. She went to the kitchen where her mother was making breakfast and apologized for her recent strange behavior. Her mother replied gently, “It’s okay. I’m just happy you’re better.” Sophia hugged her and promised to help with more chores. Later that day, she sorted out her clothes without complaining and bought a new vase for her mother after school. After dinner, as they washed the dishes together, Sophia understood that growing up meant learning to properly give rather than trying to take without any sense of gratitude.

【答案】One possible version:
Hearing that, I suddenly became nervous. The word in the math class? But how to spell it? “A-L-G-A-B-R-A,” I murmured in an uncertain voice. “Incorrect,” Ms. Hawking said, seeming regretful. My heart sank. “If Nathan gets the next word right, he’ll win,” I thought with my palms sweating. “Nathan, next is ‘judgment’,” continued Ms. Hawking. Hearing the literature word, I let out a sigh of relief secretly. Nathan would definitely get it wrong. Standing next to the whiteboard, I was so busy picturing how Nathan made a mistake that I didn’t notice he finished his turn. “J-U-D-G-M-E-N-T. Judgment.”
“You spell ‘judgment’ correctly. Congratulations, Nathan!” cheered Ms. Hawking. I was staggering back to my seat when I felt a hand seizing my arm. It was Nathan. “You did a really good job,” he smiled and held out his hand to shake mine. I went red with embarrassment and regret, trying my best to hold back my tears. “Sorry, letters are for math too,” I said. Nathan smiled widely, “Letters are for everything.” He told me if he did not read science fiction, he would not know the literature word “judgment”. Only then did I realize it’s time to change my judgment.

【答案】 Alex took Ben to a nearby restaurant. As soon as they entered, the warm air hit them. Alex ordered a big meal for Ben. The boy’s eyes widened at the sight of the delicious food, and he started to eat quickly. While Ben was eating, Alex called Ben’s parents. Ben’s parents were extremely grateful when they learned that their son was finally found and safe. They said they would come right away. Ben was grateful to Alex, admitting his fault about arguing with parents. When Ben’s parents finally arrived, they hugged Ben tightly, tears in their eyes. They thanked Alex heartily.
After Ben went home with his parents, Alex rushed back to his studies. He knew that he had lost a lot of study time, but he didn’t regret his decision. He buried himself in his books with a new-found determination. To his surprise, during the final exams, he performed even better than he had expected. He realized that sometimes, helping others not only brings warmth to their lives but also gives us strength and inspiration. From then on, whenever he saw someone in need, he would not hesitate to lend a hand, believing that a small act of kindness could make a big difference.

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
As I pedaled through the grid of streets, the numerical names became my milestones.

As I approached the final miles, the streets seemed to be invisible.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
As I pedaled through the grid of streets, the numerical names became my milestones. Each block I passed was a small victory, a reminder of how far I had gone. My legs were burning, and my breath was short, but I kept repeating my son’s words in my head, “I know you can do it.” The encouragement from Ryan fueled my determination, pushing me forward even when my body wanted to stop. I imagined his face cheering me on, and I found a second wind.
As I approached the final miles, the streets seemed to be invisible. My focus narrowed to the rhythm of my pedals and the sound of my heartbeat. When I finally crossed the finish line, people clapped and looked at me with surprised faces and a wave of relief and pride washed over me. Ryan was there, waiting with a big smile. “I knew you could do it, Mom,” he said. This journey wasn’t just about the bikeathon; it was about proving to myself that I could overcome any challenge, no matter how frightening.

1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Jake took a deep breath before knocking on the editorial office door. Inside, Linda looked up, surprised to see him. “Hey, Jake. What’s up?” He hesitated, holding the newspaper tightly in his hand. “I wanted to know... why wasn’t my story chosen?” Linda sighed, gesturing for him to sit. “Your idea was great, but the structure was a bit unclear, and there were some grammar issues.” Jake’ s heart sank, “So it wasn’t good enough?” Linda smiled, “Not yet. But that’s the point of writing — it’s about improving. If you’re willing, we can work on it together.”
As he walked out of the room, his thoughts were no longer filled with disappointment. Instead, he felt a sense of determination. Writing wasn’t just about talent — it was about practice, about refining his work. He pulled out his notebook, flipping through his story. For the first time, he saw it not as a failure, but as a draft with potential. Maybe Ms. Laveau and Linda were right. He wasn’t going to give up. The next time he submitted his work, it wouldn’t just be another entry. It would be his best work yet.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】
Just them, Michael touched my arm. “Max, you’re doing great! Keep it up! We will make it!” His words were like a shot of adrenaline. I took a deep breath and pushed on. As we neared the end of the race, the crowd grew even louder. I could see the finish line in the distance, and a surge of energy coursed through me. I pushed harder, and we crossed the finish line together. We did it! We felt exhausted but delighted.
We hugged each other tightly, tears streaming down our faces. Michael looked up at me and said, “It felt amazing, Max! It felt like my wheelchair was gone and I was doing the running myself. Without you, I wouldn’t have made it.” I smiled, “You were truly running and pushing me to achieve the impossible.” Looking back on my journey, I realized that running these marathons was not just about achieving goals — it was about friendship and perseverance. It occurred to me that I had found what once empowered my mom.
