Carhenge, Floralis Genérica, Traffic Light Tree and Hand of the Desert—these are four unusual monuments from around the world you might like to visit. • Carhenge Carhenge is in Alliance, Nebraska (USA). It has a lot in common with Stonehenge. But while Stonehenge was built with stones, Carhenge was created with cars. The monument was made by a local artist Jim Reinders. He used old cars and even an ambulance. At first, the people of Alliance didn’t like it, but they soon changed their minds after it became popular with tourists, who brought lots of money to the town. • Floralis Genérica Floralis Genérica is a massive statue of a flower. It stands in a pool of water in front of the National Museum of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Eduardo Catalano, a native of Argentina, gave the statue as a gift to the city in 2002. Every morning, the flower opens. In fact, many people believe it is one of the most beautiful statues in the world. • Traffic Light Tree The Traffic Light Tree is situated at Heron Quay, in one of London’s financial districts. The tree has 75 sets of traffic lights. It was created by French artist, Pierre Vivant, and was installed in 1998. A computer controls the lights, which are turned on and off randomly. • Mano del Desierto (Hand of the Desert) The Hand of the Desert is in the Atacama Desert in Chile. The sculpture was designed by the Chilean sculptor Mario Irarrazabal. From a distance, it looks as if there’s a giant in the sand who has stuck his hand out of the ground. If you’re looking for something new to see, you know where to go! 21. Why did the people of Alliance change their attitude toward Carhenge? A. It reminded them of Stonehenge. B. It brought them financial benefits. C. It added beauty to their community. D. It displayed the creativity of the designer. 22. Which of the four monuments was designed by a foreign artist? A. Carhenge. B. Floralis Genérica. C. Traffic Light Tree. D. Mano del Desierto. 23. Where is the text probably from? A. A guide book. B. A news report. C. A science magazine. D. An architecture advertisement. B For as long as I can remember, my body and I have shared a relationship of discontent. Growing up, I was skinnier than the other kids and at five I was told I wasn’t attractive. A ‌“friendly” neighborhood aunt advised that if I wanted to find a good husband in the future — I must put on some weight. After all, no one wants a bag of bones. As the years rolled by, mean comments about my skeletal frame continued to pour in. But no matter how much I ate, I stayed thin for years until adolescence. Then I started putting on weight almost immediately. I remember feeling happy as I began to fill out. However, my joy didn’t last long. I was thirteen when I was first called fat. Friends and neighbours would make jokes on my big size. As I entered my late teens, I had completely lost confidence in my body and, subsequently, in myself. Having failed to live up to conventional beauty standards, I was convinced that if I wanted to be loved, I needed to offer more, doing anything to please everyone around. I entered adulthood thinking I wasn’t ‌“enough” — an idea that was seeded not only by the fact that ‌“skinny” is celebrated, but also by the language associated with accounts of losing weight — self-improvement, discipline — all virtues. Being fat quickly categorizes you as lazy and undisciplined. Consumed by thoughts of the way my body looked, I didn’t notice the other ways my body needed attention. Actually, I developed a rare disease and later I had two surgeries. I was always made to feel that my weight was the root of a lot of problems in my life; I have learnt this is not true. After a lot of self-reflection and some professional help, I realized I never learnt to like myself. While two decades of self-hatred cannot be undone overnight, I have taken first steps to acceptance. I am now much lighter than before, in body and mind. There are days I find voices on social media saying I am too fat to be loved or to be worthy, but I am learning not to focus on that thought for long. As long as I like myself, just the way I am, opinions at the end of the day are just water off a duck’s back. 24. What can we learn about the author from the first two paragraphs? A. She suffered verbal abuse from people around her. B. She became a people-pleaser to restore confidence. C. She always had low self-esteem caused by obesity. D. She was overwhelmed by contradictory beauty standards. 25. Why did the author think she wasn’t ‌“enough”? A. She lacked self-discipline. B. She failed to celebrate ‌“skinny”. C. She didn’t give enough attention to health. D. She was labelled negatively for her weight. 26. What impact did seeking professional help have on the author? A. It reduced her weight. B. It led to a new mindset. C. It ended her self-hatred. D. It caused more confusion. 27. Which is the most suitable title for the text? A. Beauty Matters B. Growing Pain C. Worth Your Weight D. Battle Societal Values C The Railway in Takachiho is a tiny sightseeing train that takes visitors on a 30-minute ride and showcases some beautiful landmarks. The train has some elements that make it a lovable sight in its own right, such as its open roof and pink-colored cars. Now, it has added an even more interesting attribute. It runs on a particular kind of biodiesel (生物柴油) as an alternative to fossil fuels. The train company is getting popular for such a significant invention. About 10 years ago, Nishida, the leader of the company, was talking with the owner of a restaurant that specializes in ramen (拉面). When the owner told Nishida about the expense of paying for a waste disposal company to take care of the leftover ramen broth customers didn't drink, Nishida started to wonder if it could be used to make biodiesel instead. So the train company installed equipment at the restaurant into which the leftover ramen broth could be dumped in order to separate out the lard content, which can then be used to make biodiesel fuel. The ramen-derived fuel is mixed with biodiesel made from used tempura cooking oil. The only downside of this biodiesel is that it can only be stored for a couple of months before oxidation (氧化) starts to affect it. The first test drives took place last July. The biodiesel fuel was able to power the train, which comprised two wagons and the weight of up to 60 passengers, with no issue — even on an uphill stretch. It produces less smoke, leaves a delicious smell in the air and is less damaging to the landscapes it travels through. The train company has since begun making its biodiesel commercially available to other companies and the changeover from the ordinary diesel the railway was previously using has been smooth. This approach to using what was previously considered waste for new applications, especially where replacing fossil fuels and other environmentally damaging materials and substances, will be an important component of a more sustainable future. 28. What does the underlined word in paragraph 1 mean? A. Scenery. B. Feature. C. Requirement. D. Atmosphere. 29. Why did Nishida invent this particular kind of biodiesel? A. To make good use of waste leftover. B. To avoid conflicts with food producers. C. To make the train smell attractive. D. To reduce the expense of the company. 30. What advantage does the Railway have? A. It is entertaining for people. B. It is environmental-friendly. C. Its storage time is longer. D. Its production method is easier. 31. What can we expect of this new fuel in the future? A. It will be further promoted. B. It will improve transportation efficiency. C. It will replace traditional fuels. D. It will be a driving force for the food industry. D “Two roads diverged in a wood and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. ” As Robert Frost reminded us, choices are often difficult and will bring both a gain and a loss. Should I spend my Sunday playing golf or taking a day trip to the North Fork with my wife? If you are a golfer as I am, you will say “Certainly, go playing golf. ” Golf is perhaps the greatest challenge to self-improvement. In golf, every swing is counted and can easily be recalled and reviewed by the golfers as they lie in bed that evening, and therefore, self-improvement is pursued. Now let us return to the question at hand. You will not be surprised to hear that I did in fact go to the North Fork. But how has that improved me? Can this be quantified (量化)? In golf, whose goal is to complete the game with as few shots as possible, if I average 80 and I shoot a 76, I know that for that day at least I have improved upon my former self and thus feel satisfied. You may argue that travel is not about self-improvement at all but just about having grand experiences. I beg to differ. It does matter how these things change and improve me. Seeing the folks dancing in the streets should change you. And talking to the manager of the biscuit shop, ought to change you. I think travel does change us, but it’s very hard to say just how. How does one quantify buying a peach at a farm? Or how do you quantify the tasty taste of the scones (司康饼) at a stand? Reviewers have had a hard time analyzing the meaning of Robert Frost’s poem. To be honest, I would say all of us have a hard time analyzing our wish to travel to faraway places. I am not sure what the answer is to this tricky question. I may not have made any hole-in-ones on the North Fork but I did enjoy those scones. 32. Why does the author quote the poem? A. To express the meaning of life. B. To explain the challenges the poet met. C. To show the impact of choices. D. To introduce the general views to choices. 33. What does the author think of playing golf? A. Its result is measurable. B. It is the most challenging sports. C. It leads to self-satisfaction. D. It shows the potential for both gain and loss. 34. What is the author’s attitude towards his decision of going to the North Fork? A. Regretful. B. Unclear. C. Content. D. Doubtful. 35. Which of the following proverb will the author agree with? A. Rome wasn’t built in a day. B. Every path has its own scenery. C. Actions speak louder than words. D. You can’t judge a book by its cover. A recent study showed that money can buy happiness, but only a certain amount. The researchers concluded that the ideal (理想的) income for individuals is $95,000 a year for life satisfaction. ___36___ That means money is only a part of what makes us happy. If we’re really unhappy to our core (核心) inner being, then there are limits to how happy money can make us. What exactly is happiness anyway? Is it a car, a house or a big screen TV? Buying a new car feels great at first. But months and years later, it’ll just be a car. ___37___ And then you’re back to where you started. Or you’ll want more. Happiness is a feeling. It is often used to describe a range of positive emotions, including joy, pride, contentment, and gratitude. Science now shows that happiness is not about how much money you have, but how you spend it. Donating can help you find the meaning in life. You don’t have to have large amounts of cash to make a difference. ___38___ Spending money on experiences has been shown to increase happiness as well. ___39___ You can travel, learn a new musical instrument, or even take a cooking class. ___40___ It could be sleeping in. It might be a hug or watching a butterfly. Money doesn’t have anything to do with these. However, these are the little things in life that matter. They bring us happiness. Happiness is found in the smallest behaviors rather than material things. A. The newness eventually wears off. B. What else brings a smile to your face? C. How do you develop the right attitude towards money? D. They create memories and connections that can last for a lifetime. E. You can just buy a cup of coffee for the person in line behind you. F. If you see someone else’s fancy car, it’s easy to want the same thing. G. Once that amount is reached, further income is actually related with reduced happiness. B. New York. C. The UK. 19. What did the man from the UK die from? A. Thirst. B. Heart attack. C. Blood clot. 20. What does the speaker want to tell the audience? A. Children should never play video games. B. Limit the time spent in front of the TV or computer. C. Go to the hospital after sitting for too long. A 18. A 19. C 20. W: In this week’s lecture, I’d like to talk about the increasing risks of playing video games for too long. This past week in New York, for example, a fifteen-year-old boy passed out after playing call of duty modern warfare. Three or five days straight, the teen was rushed to the hospital where they found out he hadn’t been drinking water for days. He recovered, but there are some people who haven’t been so lucky. For instance, in July a Taiwanese teenager was found dead after sitting for forty hours in an Internet cafe playing the game. Diablo 3 doctors believe he died from a heart attack that was caused by the long session, and last summer a twenty-year-old man from the UK died from a blood clot after playing many twelve-hour games on his Xbox. His father said that his son lived for his Xbox and he never dreamed there was any danger. While we know these are extreme cases, they are a reminder that sitting at a computer or in front of a TV screen for days, whether it’s for a computer game or for work, isn’t healthy for anyone Unfortunately, some doctors will make the problem seem small. Those of us at the medical university research center know that this kind of behavior carries great health risks. Ⅱ. A Have you heard of these four monuments? B 22. C 23. 由文章“• Carhenge”部分中“At first, the people of Alliance didn’t like it, but they soon changed their minds after it became popular with tourists, who brought lots of money to the town.(起初,阿联镇的人不喜欢它,但在它受到游客的欢迎后,他们很快就改变了主意,游客给小镇带来了很多钱)”可知,那里的人改变了他们对巨车阵的态度,是因为它给他们带来了经济利益。 由文章“• Traffic Light Tree”部分中“The Traffic Light Tree is situated at Heron Quay, in one of London’s financial districts. The tree has 75 sets of traffic lights. It was created by French artist, Pierre Vivant, and was installed in 1998.(Traffic Light Tree位于伦敦金融区之一的Heron码头。这棵树有75组红绿灯。它由法国艺术家Pierre Vivant创作,于1998年安装)”可知,Traffic Light Tree是由外国艺术家设计的。故选C。 【23题详解】 推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是由文章第一段“Carhenge, Floralis Genérica, Traffic Light Tree and Hand of the Desert—these are four unusual monuments from around the world you might like to visit.(巨车阵,阿根廷钢花,交通灯树,沙漠之手——这是来自世界各地的四个不同寻常的雕塑,你可能会喜欢去参观)”可知,文章介绍了世界各地四个不同寻常的雕塑;由此可推知,文章很可能来自一本旅游指南。故选A。 B For as long as I can remember, my body and I have shared a relationship of discontent. Battle Societal Values 【答案】24. A 25. D 26. B 27. 根据第一段中“A ‘friendly’ neighborhood aunt advised that if I wanted to find a good husband in the future — I must put on some weight. After all, no one wants a bag of bones. As the years rolled by, mean comments about my skeletal frame continued to pour in.(一位“友好”的邻居阿姨建议,如果我将来想找个好丈夫,就必须增点肥。毕竟,没人想要一个瘦骨嶙峋的人。随着岁月的流逝,关于我骨架的刻薄评论不断涌入)”和第二段中“I was thirteen when I was first called fat. Friends and neighbours would make jokes on my big size.(我13岁时第一次被人叫胖。朋友和邻居会拿我的大块头开玩笑)”可知,作者从小到大,一直因为身材问题遭受了周围人的言语攻击。故选A项。 根据第三段中“I entered adulthood thinking I wasn’t ‌‘enough’ — an idea that was seeded not only by the fact that ‌‘skinny’ is celebrated, but also by the language associated with accounts of losing weight — self-improvement, discipline — all virtues. Being fat quickly categorizes you as lazy and undisciplined.(进入成年期时,我觉得自己“不够好”——这种想法不仅是受到“瘦”被推崇的影响,还受到与减肥相关的语言的影响,如自我提升、自律,所有这些都是美德。而肥胖很快就会给你贴上懒惰和散漫的标签)”可知,“瘦”得到推崇,人们把它与自我提升和自律等美德关联起来,而作者因为太胖被贴上懒惰和散漫负面标签,所以她觉得自己“不够好”。故选D项。 【26题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段中“After a lot of self reflection and some professional help, I realized I never learnt to like myself. While two decades of self hatred cannot be undone overnight, I have taken first steps to acceptance.(经过大量的自我反思和一些专业帮助,我意识到我从未学会喜欢自己。虽然二十年的自我厌恶无法在一夜之间消除,但我已经迈出了接受自己的第一步)”可知,寻求专业帮助让作者从自我厌恶开始慢慢转变为自我接受,带来了新的思维模式。故选B项。 【27题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,结合最后一段“I am now much lighter than before, in body and mind. There are days I find voices on social media saying I am too fat to be loved or to be worthy, but I am learning not to focus on that thought for long. As long as I like myself, just the way I am, opinions at the end of the day are just water off a duck’s back.(我现在的身心都比以前轻松多了。 C The Railway in Takachiho is a tiny sightseeing train that takes visitors on a 30-minute ride and showcases some beautiful landmarks. B 29. A 30. B 31. 根据第一段中前文“The train has some elements that make it a lovable sight in its own right, such as its open roof and pink-colored cars.(这列火车有一些本身就使其成为一道可爱风景的元素,比如它的开放式车顶和粉红色的车厢)”以及后文“It runs on a particular kind of biodiesel (生物柴油) as an alternative to fossil fuels.(它使用一种特殊的生物柴油作为化石燃料的替代品来运行)”可知,前文提到火车本身有一些可爱的元素,这里说它又增加了一个更有趣的东西,即使用特殊生物柴油这一特点,所以划线单词attribute意为“特点,特征”。 根据第二段中“When the owner told Nishida about the expense of paying for a waste disposal company to take care of the leftover ramen broth customers didn't drink, Nishida started to wonder if it could be used to make biodiesel instead.(当那家拉面店老板告诉Nishida,要花钱请一家废物处理公司来处理顾客没喝完的剩余拉面汤时,Nishida开始琢磨是否可以用这些剩余拉面汤来制作生物柴油,而不是将其当作废物处理掉)”可知,Nishida发明这种生物柴油是因为餐厅处理剩余拉面汤有费用,他想将这些废料利用起来制成生物柴油,也就是为了好好利用剩余废料。故选A。 根据第四段中“It produces less smoke, leaves a delicious smell in the air and is less damaging to the landscapes it travels through.(它产生的烟雾更少,会在空气中留下一股好闻的气味,并且对它沿途经过的景观破坏也更小)” 可知,这种生物柴油产生的烟雾少,对经过的景观破坏小,对环境更友好。 根据最后一段中“The train company has since begun making its biodiesel commercially available to other companies and the changeover from the ordinary diesel the railway was previously using has been smooth. This approach to using what was previously considered waste for new applications, especially where replacing fossil fuels and other environmentally damaging materials and substances, will be an important component of a more sustainable future.(从那以后,这家火车公司开始将其生物柴油商业化,提供给其他公司,并且从该铁路之前使用的普通柴油转换为生物柴油的过程也很顺利。这种将以前被视为废物的东西用于新用途的方法,尤其是在替代化石燃料和其他对环境有害的材料及物质方面,将成为更可持续发展的未来的一个重要组成部分)”可知,火车公司已将生物柴油商业化提供给其他公司,转换顺利,且这种利用废料的方式对可持续发展重要。由此可推知,这种新燃料未来会得到进一步推广。故选 A。 D “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. But, how has that improved me? 33 What does the author think of playing golf? C 33. A 34. C 35. 根据文章开篇引用诗歌“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.(树林里分出两条路,我选择了人迹罕至的那条,于是一切都不一样了)”以及第一段“As Robert Frost reminded us, choices are often difficult and will bring both a gain and a loss. Should I spend my Sunday playing golf or taking a day trip to the North Fork with my wife?(正如罗伯特·弗罗斯特提醒我们的那样,选择往往是困难的,既会带来收获,也会带来损失。星期天我是该打高尔夫球呢,还是和妻子去北福克一日游?)”可推知,作者通过引用这首诗,引出了文章的主题,即选择的重要性以及选择对个人的影响。他在文章中探讨了两种选择(打高尔夫和去北福克旅行)对个人的不同影响,这与诗中选择带来的不同结果相呼应。故选C。 【33题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“In golf, every swing is counted and can easily be recalled and reviewed by the golfers as they lie in bed that evening, and therefore, self-improvement is pursued.(在高尔夫运动中,每一杆都有计数,晚上躺在床上时很容易回忆和回顾,因此追求自我提高)”以及第三段“In golf, whose goal is to complete the game with as few shots as possible, if I average 80 and I shoot a 76, I know that for that day at least I have improved upon my former self and thus feel satisfied.(在高尔夫运动中,目标是尽可能少地击球完成比赛,如果我平均打出80杆,而我打出76杆,我知道至少在那一天我比以前的自己进步了,因此感到满足)”可知,作者认为打高尔夫的结果是可量化的。故选A。 根据最后一段“I may not have made any hole-in-ones on the North Fork but I did enjoy those scones.(我可能在北福克没进过一杆进洞,但我确实很喜欢那些司康饼)”可知,作者虽然没有在打高尔夫时取得特别好的成绩,但享受了在 North Fork的时光。 根据第一段“As Robert Frost reminded us, choices are often difficult and will bring both a gain and a loss. Should I spend my Sunday playing golf or taking a day trip to the North Fork with my wife?(正如罗伯特·弗罗斯特提醒我们的那样,选择往往是困难的,既会带来收获,也会带来损失。 A recent study showed that money can buy happiness, but only a certain amount. Recently, our class had a heated discussion about students making friends online, and opinions are divided. Some students hold a positive attitude towards it. They think that the Internet breaks the limitations of time and space, allowing them to meet people from different regions and backgrounds. Through online communication, they can broaden their horizons, learn about diverse cultures, and even find like-minded friends. However, other students are against it. They argue that it’s hard to tell whether the information others provide on the Internet is true or not, which may lead to being cheated. Moreover, spending too much time making friends online will take up time that should be used for studying or communicating with friends in real life. In my opinion, making friends online is not completely good or bad. We can make friends online, but we must be cautious. At the same time, we should balance the time spent online and in real life. Only in this way can we enjoy the benefits of online friendship while avoiding potential risks. 词汇积累 限制:limitation → restriction 多样的:diverse → varied 欺骗:cheat → deceive 占据:take up → occupy 2. They think that the Internet breaks the limitations of time and space, allowing them to meet people from different regions and backgrounds. They think that the Internet breaks the limitations of time and space, which allows them to meet people from different regions and backgrounds. 1】They think that the Internet breaks the limitations of time and space, allowing them to meet people from different regions and backgrounds.(运用了that引导的宾语从句) 【高分句型2】They argue that it’s hard to tell whether the information others provide on the Internet is true or not, which may lead to being cheated.(运用了that引导的宾语从句、whether引导的宾语从句、省略that引导的限制性定语从句、which引导的非限制性定语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$该部分分为第一第二两节。 Why don't we have a coffee and take IT easy this afternoon?
