Dumplings are the traditional food for the Spring Festival in China. Almost everyone eats them that day. Do you know why they are so popular?
In the old days, people thought eating dumplings could make their wishes come true. They usually made dumplings in the shape of Chinese gold ingots (元宝), because they hoped for a rich life in the coming year. Dumplings with different foods in them had different meanings. For example, sugar dumplings would make people’s life happy and sweet in the future. Peanut (花生) dumplings would bring people a long and healthy life. Anyway, people ate dumplings with their best wishes.
On Spring Festival Eve, every family makes dumplings ready early. When the midnight comes, the whole family will sit together and eat the dumplings. The midnight is also called “交子(jiao zi)”. It means that the new year comes at this time. And it sounds the same as the Chinese word for dumplings: 饺子. So eating dumplings is also a way to welcome the new year.
50. What did sugar dumplings mean in the old days?
A. They meant people would be very busy.
B. They meant people would have a lot of friends.
C. They meant people would travel around the world.
D. They meant people would have a happy and sweet life.
51. Why do people eat dumplings at midnight on Spring Festival Eve?
A. Because they want to stay up late.
B. Because they are very hungry at that time.
C. Because it is a way to welcome the new year.
D. Because they want to show their cooking skills.
52. Which is the right order of the following things about dumplings?
①People started to make dumplings in the shape of Chinese gold ingots
②People thought eating dumplings could make wishes come true.
③People ate dumplings with their best wishes.
④The whole family sat together and ate dumplings at midnight on Spring Festival Eve.
A. ②①③④ B. ①②③④ C. ③①②④ D. ④①②③

What animals do you like to watch at a zoo? Many children like peafowl (孔雀) because they have beautiful tail feathers (尾羽) .
There are two main kinds of peafowl; the blue peafowl and the green peafowl. The blue peafowl mainly live in India and Sri Lanka. The peafowl at the zoo are usually the blue peafowl. The green peafowl mainly live in countries such as China, Vietnam, Thailand and Myanmar. We don’t often see them at the zoo.
Chinese people always like the beautiful green peafowl. They are a symbol of good luck in traditional Chinese culture. During the Qing Dynasty (清朝), only high-ranking officials (高官) could wear hats with a green peafowl feather.
The green peafowl are native to (原产于) China and they were once common (普遍的) in China. People could see them in Yunnan, Hunan, Hubei, Guangdong, and Guangxi before. However, since the 1990s, people can now only find them in Yunnan. And the number of the birds falls every year. There are fewer than 500 such birds in China today.

What about you? What do you usually eat? Please write back to me soon.
Yours,
Li Hua
