Lesson plan Teaching contents: 高中英语选修十Unit 1 Nothing ventured, nothing gained Reading: A SUCCESSFUL FAILURE Teaching object: Students in high school The type of the text: Reading Time: 45minutes Teaching objectives: 1. Knowledge objectives (a) Students can master the meaning of some important words and phrases: cosy, blocking out, rotten, blackened, blast, hoarse, hook, seasickness, crushed, urgent, banjo, cheerful, perseverance, gave way to, morale, booming, swore (b)Students can master the words related to the qualities of characters. 2. Ability objectives (a)Students can improve their ability of predicting, skimming, and scanning. (b)Students can use the words or phrases to describe an experience and describe a person. 3. Emotional objectives (a)Students can realize the good qualities of heroes. (b)Students can cultivate the qualities of perseverance, courage, optimism and so on. (c) Students can use optimistic attitude to face the challenges in their life. Analysis of the teaching materials: The text mainly talks about an expedition to Antarctica. It introduces how the team led by Shackleton went through the challenge in their expedition. The language of the text is easy to understand and coherent. It is helpful to cultivate the student's good qualities and good attitudes to challenges. Analysis of the students: Students in high school are more active and their abilities of memory, imagination, thinking, attention and comprehending are improving. But the English foundation of students in high school is still weak and they don't have enough vocabularies so it's difficult for them to accept the model of full English teaching and understand some complex grammar and sentence structures. Teaching key points: 1. Develop students’ reading skills, especially the ability in skimming and scanning, and also the capacity to find out and locate the detailed information. 2. Master some expressions of qualities and know how to face the challenges in the life. Difficult points: 1. Describe a person or an experience using the expressions in the text. 2. Master the structure and meaning of attributes and use them appropriately. Teaching methods: Communicative Language Teaching including discussion, group work and question-and-answer Teaching aids: Multimedia and blackboard Teaching procedure: Step1:Lead-in (5 minutes) (a) Lead students to see the title of the unit and ask how they understand the title then the teacher gives the right explanation. (b) Play a video about Brock and ask the students to think why he could get an unexpected record. Then the teacher leads students to analyze the reason---He is persistent, brave, determined and never gives up. (c) The teacher leads students to read the stories in page1 through Brock’s example and asks them try to think the questions: Q1: Which character impresses you most?Why? Q2: Why could they get success? Then the teacher asks students to share their ideas and then leads students to analyze the reasons of their success. Step2:Pre-reading (10 minutes) The teacher leads students to recall some challenges they faced and think the questions and then ask someone to share the experience and ideas. Q1: Have you ever faced some challenges? How did you get through it? Q2: Suppose you are going to go on an expedition, what qualities do you need to face the troubles in the way? Step3:While-reading (20 minutes) Skimming: Step1: Ask students to pay attention to the title of the reading and find the true meaning of it after reading the passage. Step2: Ask students to read the passage quickly to find out the main idea of the passage. Step3: Skim the passage again to divide the structure and main idea of each part. Scanning: Please read the passage again and try to think these questions. Q1: How many people were left on the Elephant Island? Q2: Why did Shackleton encourage Hussey to bring his banjo? Q3: What should the people who remained on the Elephant Island do? Q4: Please find some words to describe Shackleton from the text. Step4: Post- reading (10 minutes) Discussion: Why could the team get through the trouble successfully? What qualities do you think you lack? Why? Perseverance? Determination? The passage describes a hard expedition to Antarctica, which shows us many good qualities and so can you find some people or groups who possess one of these qualities in the process of fighting against the NCP(新冠肺炎)? Please try to use some words in the passage to describe him or her? At last, the teacher gives a summary. Homework: Write an essay no less than 120 words to describe a challenge you have faced and how you deal with it.
